Family guy just has funnier characters in general. The pedophile old man (Herbert), Stewie, Brian the dog, Quagmire, The NEWS people (Tom Tucker & Diane Simmons, Ollie Williams), Fucking Adam West, etc. etc.
Not to mention Seth McFarlane and Seth Greene write a lot of the jokes and do the voices.
Poll: BATTLE (Vote): Family Guy (Vote): Futurama (Vote): Neither
Fucking cookie monster , and Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man! holy shit what does Futurama have on that?
American Dad! especially Roger. fuck i can understand how you think Family Guy is funnier than Futurama but to use the paedophile guy as an example? he's not funny just an annoying old shit who speaks too slowly (same goes for Cleveland). lots of funny characters but also heaps of shit ones like Chris and Meg and Lois - they're like the Marge and Lisa of The Simpsons (token characters). which is why i like Futurama more - all the characters are interesting and don't make you cringe. but other than that i like the guy who thinks he's environmentally friendly and wants to help small businesses, or the Chicken who gave Peter the expired voucher
Family Guy is definitely more hilarious and I laugh my ass off watching that shit.
Futurama is cool though and if there was a Family Guy rerun on TV I'd rather watch Futurama. It's refreshing because of the environment it's placed in.
family = random ass events with random ass references to movies, music, and culture from the 80's and early 90's.
Futurama is the kind of funny not the type of Family Guy. It has a plot, it has moments of clever-ness, and I think it's fair to say, they have a finer sense of articulation, that makes it so much more entertaining on a whole.
You can watch futurama episodes over and over again and never get old with it, but with family guy, the funny only lasts a few tens of times watching it, and then your rearing to watch for new episodes.

hhahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahha
if you watch family guy for plots you are seriously starved for intellectual stimulation
family guy has funnier one-liners and is more quotable, but futurama is the deeper show that goes for multi-show plot arcs, more situation-based humor, emotional responses, and has more deeply developed characters that go beyond just "This is an old guy that is a pedophile and likes little boys"
Moreover, I don't think anyone can argue that past Season 4, Family Guy has for the most part sucked huge donkey dick. They've still got some funny moments, and some episodes are decent, but for the most part it is wholly forgettable compared to Seasons 1-3.

What the hell are you smoking? Family guy has great storylines, they even use techniques like 'dove-tailing' where they have 2 stories in one episode and they combine at the end for a nice finish.
Also I don't watch cartoons like Futurama and Family guy for 'intellectual stimulation' and if you wanna argue that, there is plenty of plots about gays, racism issues, or other political stuff.
I haven't seen much of season 4 yet, I guess thats next on my list for BB-netflix thingy.
PS- nice touch with the 'hahaha' thing, that really makes what you said more true.
Futurama is better as it has humor, romance, a plot, and a wonderful ending. Family Guy is better for its random humor and wacky characters.
Overall I'd choose Futurama though. It can be sentimental when it wants, and funny as hell when it wants. Family Guy seems to be just dumb jokes and random flashbacks/references to movie stars one after the other.

i'm sorry, but i'm not trying to accentuate your point. i'm actually laughing out loud in real life right now
Pretty much every single TV show ever made has used 'dove-tailing' - Family Guy is by no means unique. (Hell, a lot of times Family Guy just runs multiple plot threads without tying them together at all.)
Family Guy doesn't even try for plot in many of its episodes anyway - look at "And the Weiner is...", one of the funnier episodes. I love it, but don't you dare tell me that shows that have plots that can be summarized as "Peter finds out his son has a larger penis." have "great storylines".
If you want great plot & situational humor, watch Futurama; if you want very funny one-liners and quotable quotes, watch Family Guy.
Different types of humor. And thank goodness other people besides me are realizing that the new Family Guy episodes are crappy. It's just like Simpsons after Season 7-8 or so. Lots of celebrity guests, storylines that go nowhere, activist messages (this alone makes them agonizing to watch). In the later episodes Brian is such an on-fire liberal activist it makes me gouge my eyes out (the episode where Peter starts the Church of the Fonz immediately springs to mind). I don't think I've seen a "bad" Futurama episode though. I still enjoy it. A lot of the really funny moments in Family Guy stem from nostalgia, essentially piggybacking on childhood memories and putting a funny spin on them, whereas the humor of Futurama is a little more universal and original.
I'm not gonna argue anymore, I guess we have to 'agree to disagree'. At least I made it clear that family guy is much funnier, and even got you Futurama guys to admit it.
GrandInquisiter- I don't find Futurama funny at all situational or not, I wasn't saying family guy was unique with using dove-tailing or anything, just saying they have plots and some moral value at the end usually.

agreed
as someone else said i'd rather watch futurama reruns unless it was a particularly hilarious family guy episode

Also what you have to understand is that futurama is not made only to make you laugh. Watching a random episode, I rarely laugh my ass off, but I enjoy it so much for a thousand of other reasons. Don't get me wrong, it's funny as hell but not in the same sense, like others explained before. So if you try to compare them on a pure "laughing" sense, maybe you will prefer FG, especially if you feel the humour in it more reachable.
I strongly recommend you to watch full episodes of futurama to really appreciate it, not only pieces on youtube. It is pure brilliance.

Cause Peter Griffin isn't predictable. Oh no, never. Sometimes he's a fat alcoholic misogynistic mean father that learns his lesson in the end, and sometimes he's an unemployed fat alcoholic misogynistic mean father that learns his lesson in the end! And don't forget that episode - the Beautiful People's Club - where he becomes THIN and alcoholic and misogynistic and a mean father that learns his lesson in the end! God Family Guy has such great storylines. They even dovetailed that episode really well and totally did not have a copout ending. People fall into giant vats of lard after liposuction and return to their original appearance all the time.)

Futurama is my vote. Family Guy has gotten repetitive after all these years. I used to love it but now it's gotten incoherent trying to be too funny. Some of Futurama's episodes are amazingly creative and funny. The later episodes were really good as well.
One of my favorites is the one where Fry was put into a coma by a bee sting. Anyone else remember that episode? What did you think of it?
Look, CharlieMurphy, I'm not saying Family Guy isn't funny. It's got the best one-liners of any show I can remember for a long time, and like I've said over and over again, it's really good for quoting and showing YouTube clips of.
But for the love of Christ don't attribute it qualities it doesn't have. It doesn't have a great storyline. It doesn't have great characters. What it has (had) is (was) good writing, and that made up for everything else and excused the cheesy plot devices and one-dimensional characters. (Now, of course, without the good writing it's painful to watch.)
Enjoying Futurama isn't about quoting it (though it does have great moments - see the Top 25 Futurama Moments. I don't really agree with the list, but the top 4 are definitely so true), it's about just having fun with the episode overall. It draws you in like a good book and keeps you entertained throughout with a sort of off-the-wall wry humor. And it's indisputably the better show on non-comedic merits - it goes for multi-episode story arcs (one in particular stretches from the very first episode, where a strange shadow is indicative of a plot element two seasons later), character development that make you, for example, really relate to Fry's never-ending quest for Leela and root for him, and evokes a wider range of emotions - the ending of Jurassic Bark (the dog and the pizzeria episode) or the one with Fry's brother and Mars represent moments that Family Guy never even tries for. The depth of the show is what really makes me love it more than Family Guy on the whole.
Family guy's dialogue is a lot better written, but half of Futurama's value is all the little details that are put in to make it seem like "the future."
Voted for Family Guy though, the guys who write it must be geniuses.
Is the poll asking which show is better, or which show is funnier? Because if it's the former, someone could say Family Guy is funnier, but it wouldn't make it the better show of the two.
There are other elements to making a good show besides just throwing in random jokes to make the viewers laugh, such as the ones already mentioned.
Lastly, I think it's a bit easy to be as funny as Family Guy is (or rather, was) when it has virtually no plot. It does whatever it wants, and then ties it all together in the last 5 minutes of the show.
Futurama is slightly ahead in the polls, but there's an overwhelming favor for Family Guy in the replies. Where are all the Futurama fans?

On a very random note, I love Robot Chicken, anyone know what that is? Its on the same category as Family guy :D
Seth Greene's Show (also works on family guy). Funny as hell, no plot, just random skits.

Well the battle is that which show is better all around. They are both in the same genre (animated comedy). Futurama to me is simply not funny. Therefor it fails as a show, If I wanted drama I would watch other gay sci-fi shows. (at least they are funny because you can laugh at how stupid they are).

GO FAMILY GUY
Sorry, not only Futurama is leading 39-32, you have to also consider the fact that Futurama was "effectively canceled in 2002", while Family Guy is still in production and receives airtime.
Anyway, like stated before by others, Futurama makes great use of subtle humor, and the jokes are often directly related to the characters themselves, and are accentuated further by the awesome voice acting the show has. Family guy just cockslaps you with joke after joke after joke. Funny jokes absolutely, but it's not the same type of humor. I definitely prefer futurama.
Honestly, if you're watching these kinds of cartoons for plot more than for comedy, you should read a book instead. I used to watch Futurama whenever I had the time, but now I only laugh at small bits of it. You really need to know a good amount of information on the characters to understand most of the comedy. Family Guy on the other hand is comical genius. I guarantee you if you took someone who hasn't seen either show and show them the funniest episodes of each show, Family Guy would win. They ARE two different kinds of shows, but the genre is animated comedy and not animated plot, correct?

Or, they could be something else... say, an animated show/series?
Family Guy is basically 20 minutes of non sequitur humor. At least Futurama has a great cast of characters (including secondary chars as well) and an awesome and intricate storyline.
as an overall series i think futurama is better, family guy is great because youcan just tune in whenever because they dont really follow a time frame (sort of like seinfeld). I think its hard to appreciate futurama unless you watch the series from start to finish. I kind of liked it just tuning into random episodes, but after watching the whole series you can really see how the show grows, the dog waiting for frye is actually quite sad in one of the last few episodes.
Family guy has ability to take a skit, and run it four or five times as long as you think its going to go. Stewie beating up Brian, Peter's chicken fight.

The jokes are definitely not based on plots. It's always, "this reminds me of that time when ________" and fill that blank with something completely random, which has nothing to do with the plot at all.
I love Family Guy, but it's just random shit. Watch the South Park episode attacking Family Guy, it's 100% true.

Fixed that for you.
I voted Family Guy, because I do think it's a funnier show, at least it was. The new episodes suck ass. Futurama is the better show, though.
First three seasons of Family Guy were good, it was new at the time. Now I'm so tired of the "this is exactly like ____insert ridiculous situation here_____" and then show the ridiculous situation if it really happened. That crap gets old, it's shock and awe comedy and they're desensitizing their audience with each episode, so in the end it just gets raunchier and raunchier (or more and more violent).
As for Futurama, even though the jokes aren't as outrageous as the ones on Family Guy, they stick like a whole bunch in each line/scene. They also cater to a wide range of comedic styles. Many of the episodes were great even if it wasn't comedic (the one about the dog that got fossilized comes to mind) and I think overall much more creative.
Futurama is my absolute FAVORITE cartoon produced in America. It has a lot of inside nerdy science jokes that if you notice you will absolutely love. Soylent Green anyone?
Also, who said Family Guy's characters are better? They are exactly the same every episode, the dad's an idiot, Chris is an idiot, Meg is a loser, the wife's not funny at all, only Stewie and Brian are any funny at all. Plus they never have a real plot, it's just a bunch random jokes thrown together with random cuts of 'the past' chucked in. Season 4 of the family guy is the worse thing I've seen on TV in a long time.
I think the Family Guy's craze came in because it was new and exciting, it made fun of taboo subjects and the randomness was surprising and hilarious at times. It got stale fast though, and the lack of story hurts it a lot...
When I make jokes, they are inherent to a story. Deep, situational, and emotional jokes, based on what is relevant and has a point; not just one random interchangeable joke after another!
ya it was pretty sad. I started watching futurama just recently about end of last year. I think its a pretty good show and i find it pretty funny. But I really think family guy makes me laugh a whole lot more lol
I used to think that family guy was funnier but futurama was better I now think that futurama is a fucking shit-ton better, mostly because I've grown to realize just how godly of a show futurama is. there are some "bender is a robot" jokes that arent really funny, but those aren't the pearls of the show. the character building and storyline and punny references and incredible voice acting makes it stand out. bender, fry, zoidberg and the professor all have voices that are so incredibly superior to every family guy voice, where honestly, most of them annoy you at some level. (stewie was funny at first but then he just turned so.. gay. )
i think anyone who actually watches every futurama episode and not just 3-4 will realize how much superior it is, because unlike family guy, the best jokes require you to really comprehend the characters and their thought lines, whereas the funniest family guy jokes could have been well, not part of family guy and still equally funny.
not to mention that the storytelling in certain futurama episodes is awesome (like say, "The Sting".) I also genuinely believe that anyone who watches the final episode of futurama (the devil's hands are idle playthings) after having seen most others, and without being a total idiot, will realize that that episode is the single greatest 23 minute period on tv, ever. and then you have episodes like jurassic bark, that actually make you cry.
Despite Thread starter's biased attempt to get more votes for Family guy by posting only what he thinks is to be funny epidsodes of family guy, with poor reasoning that he couldn't find any funny episodes of Futurama soley based on his opinion and quoting biased google fight result, he failed miserably.
The poll has spoken, close the thread. Let's stop arguing over such insignificant issues such as which animation series is better, when there are other real issues that require your attention. Time to grow up.
family guy makes me bust a gut laughing, i feel guilty watching it sometimes cuz its so morally base. its a string of funny jokes but i think they re imaginative how they do it, like the five minute peter v chicken fight. it's cool how its not predictable with its structure (though that has become its structure). sometimes i wont watch it though just cuz its so offensive and stupid.
futurama makes me chuckle. i can appreciate it for its sophistication and the jokes are very witty and character-based. its never too offensive, just irreverent like the simpsons in the good ol days. i feel good after watching it as opposed to guilty and inspires me to be a better human being.
so if i were in a bad mood where i wanted to piss on someone id prob watch family guy. if i were in a good mood - futurama.
Futurama easy. I have seen every each episode four times and I can still re watch them. I don't find FG that funny and I can't relate to the topic as much (thats also why I think Futurama>Simpsons)
Family Guy is definitley the funnier of the two. I think ratings alone, plus fan-base following woudl back it all up. Futurama isn't bad either, but it's kinda bland and more of a Simpsons based in the future. Family Guy just has tons of quirky references to everyday media happenings, joking on 'em as well as that just plain funny side show comedy... The clips at the top of the page do a good job of showcasing what I mean. . wacky waving inflateable arm-flailing tube-men... c'mon!!! Stewie, Byran, Peter >>>>> Fry, Bender, Leela.. GG 2-0 ^^
I love Futurama so much, there is actually meaning in them unlike Family Guy. Although Family Guy is in my opinion funnier, i still enjoy Futurama more.

If i just want to laugh and not feel sad about anything I could just watch family guy and be alright, theres not going to be any "down" parts in the shows. Futurama is more of a complete show in the respect that it has ups and downs for the characters, like the simpsons had before. The Bleeding Gums Murphey episode where he dies comes to mind.
Futurama is amazing, original, and always managed to stay fresh. Family Guy has been recycling the same brand of lame jokes that, while funny the first time, lost their lustre extremely quickly.
And for what it's worth, if Family Guy was to win this poll I'd stop visiting TL.net completely. All faith would be lost and I'd burn down the internet.
And for another post, I bet everyone who votes Family Guy is 9 years old and is like "HAR, HE SAID DICK ON TV!"
Family Guy is cheap, disposable humor. Futurama is genius. Two different worlds. All they have in common is that they're both cartoons. You can't compare a Jaguar and a Neon just because they're both cars.
(This isn't worth reading, but go ahead if you're bored and want to be even more bored)
Family Guy Great or decent when you were younger, and can be outrageously funny at first. The humour it appeals to you grows really old and tiresome fast though and unlike great Simpsons episodes, you cannot re-watch them. (Simpsons re-runs are on all the time on various channels, because they were that good for so long before they started sucking. The first couple seasons blew though too).
The fact that a very large portion of the jokes is set up beforehand with, "remember that time" "like that time" "I hope this isn't going to be like". It used to work, but now they really are stuck on a formula and seem out of ideas so they put in awful songs that make you turn the channel until they're over because you think to yourself, "god this is gay". I don't know why this is, maybe they bit off more than they could chew by taking on American Dad as well. But even if they hadn't, Futurama would be better.
You just sit there expecting random stupidity afterwards and it's like the creators really aren't trying anymore despite being back on air. I enjoyed a lot of classics from it with Ollie Williams to things like, "to the peter copter!" "I get it Brian, you're lookin' for an ass race. First one to the kitchen wins!" or where Frosty the Snowman says, "ah ah take it off take it off!" when the kids put the burning hat back on him. It still has good moments, but they are few and far inbetween, and watching an episode is painful nowadays because half of it is killing time, the other half is jokes that fail. And whenever they have a song... it's just not good. You don't waste that long infront of the t.v. hoping there's 1 good moment in it.
The songs in it at first were pretty decent, like a couple of Brian and Stewey's with "You and I are, so awfully different" but the songs later on just got worse and worse as you could tell the writers ended up treating their audience like a bunch of fools. It's just bad television to have so many long running jokes (they're funny if you do them right in very spaced out sequences, not rely on them to kill time in an episode, and that's what it feels like). That type of humour can still be good, but needs to be used spaced out. The guy are just sitting in the board room saying, "why don't we just have them talk about something trivial for 2 minutes?" Some might see that as a joke on having all that air time and doing nothing with it to make it funny, but doing this repeatedly is just not trying.
Jokes about celebrities is one of the worst types of humour ever and the cheapest unfunniest shots possible. The Family Guy defense of Jay Leno may work for defending Jay Leno, as he really is out there 5 nights a week. It doesn't work for Family Guy that sometimes has more than 1 week between a show. Nor does making random references to the 80's doesn't qualify as a joke anymore, it's very expected. "Here's an old fart from the 80's playing a guitar and singing.. twice".
It has characters you really don't give a damn about either. Whether you're supposed to or not is irrelevent. Great characters make a show better.
Futurama beats it in every category. Futurama tells the kinds of jokes you really appreciate and can smile about in real life, much like The Daily Show in it's authentic cleverness that's above the norm. (That's not a proper analogy as The Daily Show goes for very low brow humour quite often, but it has true gems and when it puts on a great show that's well thought out, they are really awesome). It has all kinds of humour and excels in all of the ones they attempt.

(stewie was funny at first but then he just turned so.. gay. )
i think anyone who actually watches every futurama episode and not just 3-4 will realize how much superior it is, because unlike family guy, the best jokes require you to really comprehend the characters and their thought lines, whereas the funniest family guy jokes could have been well, not part of family guy and still equally funny.
not to mention that the storytelling in certain futurama episodes is awesome (like say, "The Sting".) I also genuinely believe that anyone who watches the final episode of futurama (the devil's hands are idle playthings) after having seen most others, and without being a total idiot, will realize that that episode is the single greatest 23 minute period on tv, ever. and then you have episodes like jurassic bark, that actually make you cry.
i was just waiting to quote you since your the second most futurama authority on this site the thing about futurama is that you have to understand the characters for things to be funny and then even the smallest little things become hilarious. a lot of the better jokes are also based on earlier episodes. the seasons also get progressively better imo. quietidiot and grandinquesitor pretty much nailed it. contrary to most people, i think futurama is much funnier. i can only watch people run into inanimate objects so many times -i still do like family guy though (the earlier seasons at least)
and the devils hands are idle play things rock so hard.
I dunno I have watched futurama episodes and not laughed at all. I dont think i ever watched a family guy without laughing. In the end it might just be a matter of opinion. I do like futurama a lot but i love family guy

I completely agree. There have been futurama episodes where I didn't even laugh once. However, with Family Guy I can't think of an episode that I watched where I didn't laugh.
"Fry: I have an idea. Leela: I have a better one. "
Reading it is not funny, but the way Leela discards Fry's idea almost instantly is hilarious. Had coke streaming out of my nose.
[in the library, absorbing all of Earth's knowledge] Chief Giant Brain: Pathetic human race. Arranging their knowledge by category just made it easier to absorb. Dewey, you fool! Your decimal system has played right into my hands! Ha ha ha ha!
Dewey system, they way they store books in libraries =D
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Above all else it is our responsibility to preserve the timeline. [Fry walks in] Fry: Well, I've killed my grandfather. Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Whaaaaaaaa? Leela: Wait, if you killed your grandfather, why do you still exist? Fry: I don't know. Maybe God loves me. Bender: [Starts laughing maniacally]
That episode is the best, the best plotline I've ever seen for a catoon. Each Futurama episode feels like 40 mins long coz they fit so much stuff into it.
At the end of the day we're not gonna change each other's opinions about the other series, just hate on the other series more. Let's just let this thread be and remember the good times from each series and let the vote decide which series is better (Futurama =D).
If taste was a prerequisite for a TL.net account, Family Guy would not have received a vote. The show is Dumb, simple as that. You guys are the reason they keep making Scary Movie sequels.
And posting clips means nothing - that's Family Guy's game. Cheap laughs that don't require context or character. The fact you can post a Family Guy clip and someone who has never seen the show can appreciate it just as much shows how idiotic the whole thing is.
The funniest show in recent times was Arrested Development, but it died because it required a dedication and knowledge of the characters and previous jokes to really enjoy the show. Your 3 second attention spans killed it.
As they killed Futurama.
You fucks.
edit: The first few times I saw Futurama, I saw it as passably decent. But once I had seen enough to really know the characters, the show opened up and I was able to appreciate it for how brilliant it really is. I'm guessing anyone voting Family Guy simply hasn't made that step yet.

Interesting thing about Futurama:
It really is targeted as a connected story throughout all episodes. There are many many moments where they refer to something what happened many episodes ago and if you haven't seen those episodes you will not laugh and get the joke.
I am hardcore fan of futurama, I have seen Every single part at least four times and I have also seen them in chronological order from serie 1-5, not missing even a single part ( I didn't catch it on TV because it was not broadcasted but I had dvd's with complete series). And you will get how incredibely it is connected and how every character has its own history that you have to know to enjoy the show. Sure the authors try to explain them again but they don't do it as much as the newcomer would need because the usual watchers would be bored of stating obvious facts.
This is the reason why when I have shown my friends one episode from series 4 they laughed maybe once in entire 24 minutes while I was rolling on the floor laughing many times.
I tried to imagine that I have not seen the episodes before and hah.... I wouldn't get so many jokes that I would be bored. I think this is also the reason why Futurama was cancelled. Simpsons and especially Family guy are more catchy without the need of knowing the character of the characters (eh wtf) and what happened before in the series (For example 1st episode is vital to see, as well as to know that Leela was Boned by Zap).
Futurama is much more one piece, one getting to another through all the history, like fry's dumbness story (Have you all noticed the shadow of nibbler in episode one before Fry falls into the freezer ? ) and with further episodes the lack of knowing the ones before will afect the funny part more and more, unlike Family guy.
And this is what we people who enjoy Futurama like so much!
EDIT: Whoops I see that flaccid wrote very simmilar thing, now I hope you get the point really -,-
If you wanna compare all of Futurama to all of Family Guy, then Futurama easily wins because it got better from season to season whereas Family Guy went downhill after it came back, and stunningly so.
I think though that if you compare the first three seasons of Family Guy to all of Futurama it's not a total blowout for either side. Futurama has better characters, more clever jokes, better animation, better story telling, etc., but Family Guy was able to take its simplistic characters and situations and use them as a springboard for jokes about pretty much anything. If you want to ask which show is "better," I think ultimately Futurama would win. But the first three seasons of Family Guy delivered on the funny in a big way. Despite it's flaws I wouldn't shit all over it because it's cool.
Ultimately I voted for Futurama. I think once you get into it it's the funnier show, and it delivers on more levels than Family Guy. My season 2 DVD will arrive in a matter of days, thus completing my collection. w00t!
Family Guy has memorable moments. Futurama has memorable episodes. The marathon last night was a good example of that: Roswell That Ends Well, The Sting, Jurassic Bark, to name a few. Right now theyre showing the one with the seven-leaf clover. Always chokes me up at the end.
id say futurama is better, i mean i used to like family guy but its just alot of flashbacks. futurama is just hilarious and makes art jokes. Their voice acting is the greatest like zap's it makes it sound so much funnier.

Thats funny that your name is a character off of Family Guy.
