The potency of these magicks is in some sense measured by one of their greatest opponents. The character known to Cowboy Bebop fans as “Vicious” is seen fighting the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate also known as the Triads.

The Triads are something like a nefarious bourgeois whose control of mind-enhancing substances like hashish is legendary.
“Vicious” (who yet lives!) is perhaps their most notorious adversary.

Essentially through extremely regulated use of Hash (bought at the high cost of anal-fisting) and a Spartan lifestyle symbolically known to Muay Thai fans as “kickin’ trees”, Vicious has for perhaps over a millennium represented the proletariat’s struggle against the Triads.

Those who know Vicious know that he represents the Triad’s opposite number. Every time someone dies in their sphere of influence, the Triads quite literally siphon the person’s mind via their hash pipes. This is why Samurai Champloo depicts a gangster with a hash pipe setting a man’s hair on fire when the gangster is displeased (unfortunately it is possible to siphon the minds of the living as well).

Thus Vicious is in fact an unlikely hero. As the Triads siphon the minds of the populace, effectively killing them in the long-term, Vicious has for over a millennium acted as a spellbender, turning the Triads’ spells against them.

This has culminated in what I call “Reverse-Time”. Essentially this phenomenon has persisted for so long that it has warped the nature of the world itself. Imagine a ladle in slow motion. The ladle removes a cup-size portion of water from a basin. This is the Triads. Now imagine that just a little of the water from the ladle were instantly evaporated and returned to the basin. This is “Vicious”.

Time continues to flow forward in general, but for just a moment it freezes as that tiny bit of water is returned to the basin.
Ultimately this is what the Samurai culture as a whole came to embody. While the Yakuza and the Ninja sects were in many senses Triads themselves, the Samurai followed the path of “Vicious”.

In some sense, the entire Samurai culture was a resistance movement against the Triads, operating essentially on the principle of Vicious.

Each act of anal-fisting represented quite literally a death-pact against the Triads. The lost minds of the proletariat’s and Vicious’s own were spun into a weapon that involved intense pain, representing the pain of the oppressed proletariat.

Similarly, the Samurai. Realizing that their minds were being siphoned by oppressive overlords, the Samurai and Zen culture developed.

In what was an increasingly oppressive environment, the Samurai developed techniques similar to those of Vicious in order to fight the Triads.

This is the significance of the Bonsai plant as well as the associated Bonsai charge. The carefully pruned Bonsai were a three-dimensional model of the conclave’s mind. When the mind of the conclave was critically reduced, the Samurai would fight and die, the two warring conclaves merging almost like two High Templar forming an Archon.

Through these battles and the related techniques, the Samurai were able to preserve their minds against oppressive tyrants. Many great feats became possible for the Samurai culture steeped as it was in the magick of “Reverse-Time”.

This is why the atomic explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki had such a dramatic effect on the mind-space of Earth, and probably why such catastrophic events followed in East Asia.

Imagine there were two timelines that existed simultaneously. One in which the ladle dipped into the basin and removed the water, and another in which the ladle did not remove the water.

One world is the one inhabited by the Triads, another is the world inhabited by those good among the Samurai and by Vicious.

Now imagine this magick, honed for generations, was to some extent present in all of the victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

My theory is that this is the nature of dark matter in the universe, or what I call "the fourth dimension". I believe the Egyptians found physical “holes” at the origin of the universe, and that in part this is what enabled the mind to persist in the absence of the body.

This phenomenon unfolded en mass when the atomic bombs exploded in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, invested as those people were in the magicks of the mind and of life and death. Thus it is possible humanity gave birth to the universe. I believe this is the origin of quantum mechanics at large and that string theory is in some sense trying to explain the extraordinary nature of this event.
