Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action. |

I would wait for more infos. Surely if I wanted to suicide, I could think about 20-30 methods 99% better than 'walking into a police station and shouting allah akbar in hope they shoot me in a vital spot and I die on hit'

idk. paris is still in a full terror prevention mode. the emergency rule will still be upheld for like 1-2 months.
as already said, it's stupid enough that it could have been a very calculated move. more info is of course always good.

Still don't see how anyone would expect a different result. So it is either suicide or a fatal case of stupidity.
It could also be someone trying to make a case like "They are so trigger happy they shot an unarmed man", but in that case he failed horribly at that.

The guy tried to enter a police station with a knife and a fake bomb belt. Yes that is suicide. You know suicide by cop is a thing right? (tho more in the US then Europe since they are a bit more trigger happy).
For you or me it is not logical but then I would argue anyone looking to commit suicide isn't logical to begin with.

Having worked as an MD in an emergency psychiatric ward for over a year I can assure you that people DO think like that. For all we known he might have been in a psychotic state and the voices told him to do it - we probably won't ever know.

Perhaps he wasn't working alone and was not even aware that it was fake.

You surely have more experience than me. We'll just have to wait for more infos.

I understand your initial reaction completely btw - it wasn't until I had my first conversation with a "truly" suicidal patient that I really understood how, well, insane, their thoughtprocess can be. I'm still not certain that I fully comprehend it, but I've seen enough to recognize that what transpired is definitely well within the realm of the possible.

It's not like you shoot a terrorist in a suicide vest in the leg so he can detonate while on the floor.

Shooting in the leg isn't a thing. If you're firing lethal weapons you shoot to kill. Otherwise you'd use a stun weapon.
|
Indeed. I'd expect him to have 6-15 bullets in his COM depending on how many officers responded. The only more reliable way to commit suicide is that with a deadmans switch and taking rat poison before you go.

It very much is a thing in Europe. As far as I know German police specifically train to shoot in the leg and in some Nordic countries it is practiced as well. How it is in France I don't know but it is very possible that they practice it as well. I know that this fact astounds many Americans and I have no intention of discussing it here as it would derail the thread for pages with the most tedious posts imaginable (and it is not even particularly relevant in this case) but I thought I'd let you know.

Funny how our police shoot people in the leg several times a year then.

Well aren't we fancy, having sufficient training for people who carry weapons. We've got freedom buddy, we have no interest in training and discipline. You guys may have tasty meatballs, but your priorities otherwise are totally off.

you may not believe it but the boss of the small company next to where you live may be better than the people actually in charge

I really don´t get your attitude and I´m glad that sweden must have other priorities than you do.

If you need non-lethal force, then you use a non-lethal weapon to get the job done. If you are already using lethal force, the primary goal is to neutralize the target, not to protect his/her life. For that, you shoot in the chest because that is the biggest and safest target. In addition, ANY bullet wound has a high probability of being fatal, and shooting at a target you have a reasonable chance of missing means that you may fire a stray round that will hit bystanders. There have been cases of stray bullets going through a house and killing people inside.
Either way, it's pretty irresponsible to shoot in the leg with a lethal weapon.

Funnily enough, nearly no one dies in Western European police actions. But good try.

The British police force has used their guns like 5 times in the last few years so apparently it's possible to run a huge developed country without shooting people at all. I think we should try that out
