Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

maybe others find plenty of use in a discussion without the more problematic individuals. maybe it's not making an echo chamber, but just getting rid of the crazies. there's still a pretty large variety of viewpoints remaining.

I don't see a circle jerk, unless you're using that term so broadly that it would apply to a lot of thing sin general (and would undoubtedly then also apply to many discussions you have with like-minded people).
it's per its dictionary definition:
- a dude comes in and blames someone else of being a Peterson fanboy; second dudes comes in and says fuck Peterson; third dude continues 'yea, fuck Peterson'. before that it was on Bardtown and before that on Kickboxer; same dudes validating each others/echoing each others feeeelings.

also finish your sentences. a discussion without the more problematic individuals should've been a discussion without the more problematic individuals for me.
as for the /b part, no there isn't. 99,99% of users/posts in all topics echo each other; there's no point in even reading replies.
it used to be: you browse through a thread and read the words being written, then if you had a reply/response/argument you'd do it. now, you browse through a thread and read the name of the poster so you can skip his post entirely convinced he will die with the same convictions he started with here, so it's not even worth the bother.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

and usin that broad definition; groups of people agreeing with each other on a few topics constitutes a circle jerk; which is broadening the use of the term to pointlessness imho.

you're clearly rude already; I did finish my sentence, and meant it as it was. why bother responding if you're just gonna be rude like that? it's a very bad way of phrasing your point, and shows an intent to argue in bad faith on your part.

looks like a large variety of viewpoints to me. so we're using different metrics to assess the breadth of viewpoints.

that many posters, as with many people, aren' tlookin to change their viewpoints or listen and discuss isn't new; it's just how many people are. thoug hof late there has been an increase in people actively resistant to listening to the counterpoints and trying to learn something. or maybe just an increase in such people who choose to post.

No, that doesn't happen. It's more if you say something stupid and refuse to back down when presented with ample evidence of your wrongness.

Unfortunately, many people choose to scream and cry oppression rather than look at the evidence of their wrongness and consider 'hmm, perhaps all of this evidence means my opinion might be factually inaccurate'.

And if you're the sort of poster who backs the mass death of people with different skin colours or ethnicities, then yes, you're going to get dogpiled. That's called being an arsehole.

You are going too far there. I never said that.

But I can make an exception for people that like to accuse others of things they never said.

Sorry there, I didn't mean to imply you did, more that the people who post like that are the ones who always get dogpiled and whinge about it. Several posters in different threads have said things about immigrants that are... let's just say objectionable. And they're not that long ago or hard to find if you want recent examples.

Those people deserve what they get.

kickboxer was like that. thinking he had the sacred truth. you are too. most people are in general.

calling people high school bullies like that is an ad hominem; it's a way to dismiss their arguments without having to actually address their points. it lets you feel like you're a victim and the aggrieved party rather than admitting you just didn't know what you were on about.

The key to understanding the universe is known btw, roughly speaking: science, empiricism, rigorous analysis. ofc it's not a "sacred" truth, it's a self-evident one, which demonstrates its value.

a populist government is very unlikely to cure cancer. populist governments by their nature tend to collapse fairly quickly and cause some damage on the way, and not be focused on thoughtful policy. so long term research projects wouldn't be likely under them.

and if it did cure cancer, that'd be great; but there'd also be the question: did it happen due to the government, or did it just happen independently while they happened to be the ones in charge?

This is the forum that predicted a 'thermonuclear war in 6 months if Trump gets elected'...

really? the entire forum predicted that?
can you point to where the forum, as a whole (or at least a majority consensus), agreed upon such a prediction?

Just go read the pre-election posts in the US thread. General feeling was 'America is doomed if Trump wins'. It seems to me that the country is still running.

how is this: https://www.politico.eu/article/belgium-to-launch-anti-immigration-social-media-campaign/ that bad?. it just tells people whats what.
Belgian authorities plan to launch a social media campaign aimed at discouraging potential migrants from coming to the country.

The campaign, to be run for a minimum of six months by the Immigration Department (DVZ), will highlight the dangers of irregular migration as well as myths propagated by people smugglers. The department was unavailable for comment on when the campaign will officially start.

A smaller campaign has already been held to deter potential Iraqi migrants, and DVZ director-general Freddy Roosemont called it a “success.” He added that the new campaign illustrates how the authorities “are adapting to modern times,” Belgian newspaper Gazet Van Antwerpen reported Friday.
from a migrant point of view, it looks to bring more clarity and assurance to the whole idea.

As with all things it is about what the actual ideology behind it is and execution. What is quoted there sounds neutral. The problem is that it is likely based on a program of not wanting people to immigrate whatever the reason. Execution will likely be true while tweaking what is said so that it can be read in the wrong way. An example I could see would be:
Immigrants get stuck in ghettos
Immigrants become criminals just to survive

Which would probably be true for .x% of immigrants.

Do you really believe only a .x% of immigrants in Belgium is living in ghettos?

Bolded part is where you're just wrong: They want a very specific group of immigrants not to come, not just "any immigant for whatever reason" lol. Why try and make things up like that? Belgium is widely known to have the worst problems with their immigants throughout Europe. They have the most extremists, they have a high rate of unemployment with Morrocans (sth like 25-30%).

Like pretty much every other European country they just pretended all the people they took in in the 1960s weren't there anymore and then suddenly, with the 1990s everyone just seemed to wake up, but eveyone also had their personal wake up calls. For you it might have been the right wing extremist terrorism, hate crimes or xenophobic propaganda. For others it was the only reluctantly talked about issues with high unemployment, women's rights, crime and last but not least the age old fear of Islam. "Fake news" pretty much is the direct product of this reluctancy and in hindsight it is probably the biggest loss in crediblity the polictical left as a whole has taken in the recent past.

It completely depends on intent and execution.
I can see the use in trying to dispel the lies told by the people smugglers for sure. But I seriously question the effectiveness it will have.

how will living in a ghetto or being an unemployed moroccan(as per above) make you rich?.

main reason people migrate(excluding forced migration from wars, calamities etc) is because they know that where they'll land, will be better than what they left behind. now, the authority in giving them courage to even start such a journey, are not the officials from their target country(although when Germany opens you with open arms ...) but their friends/acquaintances already living in that country(legally or otherwise).

so, the initiative above will deter some migrants for sure but if they want to stop the majority of them they'll need to make the ones already there, hate the place and i don't know how/if they can do that. (or obviously make the living standards in their native country better but yea ... that's a pipe dream).
still, that, accompanied by border controls and stricter immigration rules ... who knows, they might pull it off.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

Because if you live in a shack in a slum of Dakar, a ghetto in Belgium still sounds like paradise.

Well, the campaign is probably for people living in (slightly) better and more stable conditions, where it's possible to save those few thousand dollars/euros necessary to pay for the full trip to Europe (like the Iraqis mentioned in the linked article). Potential migrants who have "nothing" don't live in places where social media campaigns make sense.

The red smoke on the left is the mistake. I assume the 'messy' smoke is the result of wind which is not exactly something you have control over.

Aermacchi MB-339, production started in 1979.

That being said, the Red Arrows fly a BAE Hawk T1, also introduced in 1979. Blue Angels fly the F-18 Hornet, introduced 1986, Thunderbirds the F16C which has the same year of introduction.

Patrouille de France flies the Alpha Jet, introduced 1980.

Sidenote: they all are pros. And they all make mistakes (even though there wasn't any). The Frecce Tricolori knows that better than anyone else.
