In the ripoff tradition of... ripoffs of existing topics (meanings of progamer names), how did you guys come up with your screen names?

To start it off, I came up with my screen name 4 years ago, used it on and off, and it stuck. I prefer 1-2 word, simple, original screen names with no numbers attached to the end (or anywhere else in the name).

I think that in the ages gone by, there was an SNES game called Terranigma, and there is shit flying around in the air called "Mana Blue" (i think).

Is that it?

~6 years ago, I was on B.net with some ID I forget now, and someone said teletubbies scared them, so I logged back on with "Evil~Teletubby!", and thus, history was born.

I honestly want a new ID, but everyone knows me by this, and would just keep calling me ETT anyways.

I ripped my name off a brand of organic bottled tea sold in New York.

In other forums/games, I sometimes use "Cameraman"

When I play DoD, it's "field reporter"

Way back in the day, I was tired of constantly having to be creative to come up with names whenever I created an account online, so I decided to make a "random name" using random letters so I could stop being creative. It was random, really...

But some fool has taken my name on US West after it expired so now I have to maybe be creative to make a new name there, which is why I immediately logged off instead of playing on b.net for the first time in many years. But anyway... whoever it was who stole my name (it probably was somebody here...), DAMN YOU!

I usually was known as "zodiacmonk" from my sc id on west (that i still have since it's a sexy name with the weird symbols, {sD}~ZoDiaCMonK) but you know, after like middle school it gets kind of immature to call yourself that.

So one day my friends asked me to play some CS, and I was trying to figure out a name. I was listening to a beatmania song called "Panorama" at the time which isn't even that catchy of a song, and I used that as my name, which I used primarily in war3 and now everyone calls me "pano" even when I use a diff ID.

It kind of makes sense though, the actual definition of the word (something like an unbroken view, like in a photograph) sort of applies to gaming. My control is unbroken and I can see everything that's going on

I just started playing diablo then I decided to make a double throw/leap barbarian.
The idea is double throw at your opponent and when they get close you leap away.
My name is evan, my barb is bouncy...
So evanthebouncy
Then as time went by I feel this name suits me more and more because I am frankly bouncy, and I love lings that are also bouncy and I love to jump around all the time.
So I'm stuck w/ this one for sure, it's godsend

And some tlnames like jkillashark, I kept thinking it's just a random jumble of letters like fjdksaljfke! untill one day manablue or oxy posted a liquiscoop article in which jkillashark was featured. I was like goddamn that must be tedious trying to type that silly name so I tried to type it. Then I found it it's actually J kill a shark. Then I found out today it's J killa shark
>_>

Was signing up for the first time on a forum. I was trying to think of a name so I thought "skyglow" because I'm into astronomy (its a term from astronomy), so I signed up but I screwed up my first account somehow so I couldn't use it, and had to put a 1 on the end. I've kept this name for nearly everything now except on bnet I used a 2 instead of a 1 (long long story).

It's kind of embarrassing now, but in middle school my friends and I made up "nini" after Jennifer Lopez got sued for saying "nigga" in one of her songs or something. We never used the term before but we thought it was funny to convert it to "nini" and started calling each other "mahnini" aka "my nigga". So, when I made sn's on the internet I had nothing else so I just used "mahnini" and it's not "mynini" cause that doesn't have any at-ti-tude. Word kind of lost meaning now cause we never use it anymore so, yeah.

Btw, it's not pronounce mah-knee-knee. The "ni" is pronounced like it's err...predecessor.

I always used to tell people zerglings should be used as shock troops in micro battles to give your lurkers time to burrow. (Nowadays, micro has evolved to the point where you dont need to do this strat anymore and you can save your lings)

another name for shock = zap

therefore, Zapling was born.

Currently, I'm using Frogfucius, which is the wise old frog character from Super Mario RPG.

Side notes:
I used to use the name Medarine (a name combo which I came up with after playing smash t.v. and thought the way they combined the bosses names was cool). The term Medarine didnt stick, though, because everyone started to just call it mnm instead.

I also used the name EnorD for a while. (Drone backwards)

i used to always play on west and all these people were like dude east is so much better than west, thats where all the good people play and stuff like that, so i practiced as much as i could on west and decided before i made my foray into the east realm and took it by storm i would need a really cool id because obviously everyone would know my name.

since i just started playing protoss i was like i want my name to be 4iur because i was leet but it was taken, so then i sat there for like 20 minutes trying to think of something to rival it, and since i couldnt. so i started thinking about my favorite people in the world, and then i remembered HovZ is just Hov with a capital Z, so i was like fuck yes and made AiurZ.

Just made this through sheer thought - I was NeedForSC for some time, and then I wanted a new ID cause all the noobs were like "LOL NEEDFORSC LOLOLOLOL" and I got really annoyed at that. So now I have several names: Midnight, Solstice, and Torrent.

But IMHO Kingdom has the best ID, and so does Nal_rA.

When I first saw Nal_rA beating the crap out of NaDa at WWI, I was like, "Damn, that guy's ID is awesome." And thus I began to follow the proleague, all because of Nal_rA. Damn awesome guy.

i was making a bnet name and thought like who are my favorite characters, so then i was like zeratul and tassadar are cool enough, and tried to combine them, so i got "zeradar". then i got tired of typing so many chars and tried something like "zdr", but that was taken, and i was trying to get other combinations of letters when my finger slipped and i got "zdd", which wasn't taken, so i've used that ever since because its easy to type (the fingers are not too close together or too far apart when typing on a qwerty keyboard). I sometimes use zdd4 or zdd5, because I can use my index finger to push those numbers at the same time as I am typing my id.

My first ever need for an online alias was on a game at www.kweeky.net which no longer exists.
I had that moment where you can't think of a good name for shit. Looking for inspiration I typed in Kweek. But too obvious. Kwaak? Sounds stupid. Kwark? Perfect. Good but not too similar. No-one will ever know I stole it from the domain name.

gLyo is some random thing I typed in when I sigued up to TL.net. Didn't think I'd be here long.. Is there any way I can change it now?

Some other ones are: erostar (ero is porn, so: porn star), hasuran (ripoff of hasudrone, but I play T so I put ran at the end), and mad_rhetoric (stolen from Toonami).

i was in 7th or 8th grade (am a college sophomore now) and thought this would seem clever whenever i joined pub games. KAKA IM YOUR KILLER. of course i had to add LeeT CaPiTaLiZaTioN to seem more intimidating. when i picked up the game again in my senior year of highschool, i just remade this account on bnet cuz i didnt bother to think up anything else, and subsequently used this as my account name here too.

since then i've also used skt1.gorush on pgtour and now my starcraft-related username is usually joLin, after a taiwanese singer, plus i just think it looks cool when i capitalize the L in there.
what the fuck do you have to say for yourself now you protoss jackass can you retaliate in any way

Ah, this was back in the days, when the UMS Snipers Bald was still played often. I was good at the game, so I made the name useless_ally. I dropped the ally part when I joined TL.net, so here I am. Useless.

NOT Monty Python, but rather Dostoyevsky.

From Wikipedia:

The Grand Inquisitor is a parable told by Ivan to Alyosha in Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel, The Brothers Karamazov (1879-1880). The Grand Inquisitor is an important part of the novel and one of the best-known passages in modern literature because of its ideas about human nature and freedom, and because of its fundamental ambiguity.

In the tale, Christ comes back to earth in Seville at the time of the Inquisition. Jesus performs a number of miracles (echoing miracles from the Gospels). The people recognize Him and adore Him, but He is arrested by Inquisition leaders and sentenced to be burned to death the next day. The Grand Inquisitor visits Him in His cell to tell Him that the Church no longer needs Him. The main portion of the text is the Inquisitor explaining to Jesus why His return would interfere with the mission of the church.

The Inquisitor frames his denunciation of Jesus around the three questions Satan asked Jesus during the temptation of Christ in the desert. These three are the temptation to turn stones into bread, the temptation to cast Himself from the Temple and be saved by the angels, and the temptation to rule over all the kingdoms of the world. The Inquisitor states that Jesus rejected these three temptations in favor of freedom. The Inquisitor thinks that Jesus has misjudged human nature, though. He does not believe that the vast majority of humanity can handle the freedom which Jesus has given them. Thus, he implies that Jesus, in giving humans freedom to choose, has excluded the majority of humanity from redemption and doomed humanity to suffer.

Ivan indicates that the Inquisitor is an atheist. After a lifetime of pursuing God, he has given up in frustration. He is nevertheless left with his love of humanity and desire to see humanity not suffer. Despite declaring the Inquisitor to be an atheist, Ivan also implies that the Inquisitor and the Church follow "the wise spirit, the dread spirit of death and destruction," i.e. the Devil, Satan, for he, through compulsion, provided the tools to end all human suffering and unite under the banner of the Church. The mulitude then is guided through the Church by the few who are strong enough to take on the burden of freedom. The Inquisitor says that under him, all mankind will live and die happily in ignorance. Though he leads them only to "death and destruction," they will be happy along the way. The Inquisitor will be a self-martyr, spending his life to keep choice from humanity. He states that "Anyone who can appease a man's conscience can take his freedom away from him."

The segment ends when Christ, who has been silent throughout, kisses the Inquisitor on his "bloodless, aged lips" (22) instead of answering him. On this, the Inquisitor releases Christ but tells him never to return. Christ, still silent, leaves into "the dark alleys of the city." Not only is the kiss ambiguous, but its effect on the Inquisitor is as well. Ivan concludes, "The kiss glows in his heart, but the old man adheres to his ideas."

Long story short, there was this game I played 1000+ hours called The elder Scrolls three: Morrowind. Which has a race named Khajit (sort of cat people). I thought hmmm Asho sounds cool for a cat so here I am.
My full name in that game was Asho J'Hirra. (which stands for Asho "the young but proven one" or something).

I invented the ID Servolus for some game I played before SC, then I found out about some "Servolus" who is some poor beggar in ancient rome from some biblical story or something, so I changed the lus to lisk, because I liked Servolus and I liked the name Basilisk (so no, nothing to do with hydralisks, which most people assume).
I made up servolus because it was aesthetically pleasing to me at the age of 13 and the ID was fora fantasy game. I also made up Fuce, Ishnor, Anthror, Angror, Tannoth, and a million others so I just use one of them when I need an ID.

I still like the names Fuce and Servolisk. Servolisk is my favorite, and I also like the abbreviations of servo and even sometimes serv :p If someone said "Servolisk" I would reflexively respond as if it is my real name... from a certain point of view it is a lot more "real" than some name my parents gave me before birth and every random person butchers making me lose interest in caring about it.

It's kind of embarrassing now, but in middle school my friends and I made up "nini" after Jennifer Lopez got sued for saying "nigga" in one of her songs or something.

I opted on my name based off a character in one of my favourite books, "spectre of the black rose"

The bloodycobbler is a character in it who kills those who have sinned, then takes the soles of their feet.

I wanted "t3h l337 n3wb", which is my normal SN for everything else, but Teamliquid didn't allow "names that you couldn't pronounce". My name is an oxymoron in 13375|>34|<.

looong time ago me and some friends went to some sort of "pc-bang" (it was maybe 96 or 97, i didnt have internet access at home nor did my friends) and a friend of mine used the ID regentropfen (which is raindrop in german) in chatrooms (gay name, possibly to get to know girls)

as i started playing starcraft i wanted to create a smurf account with the gayest/girliest possible name while most of the usual IDs on bnet were some wannabee manly names like "executor", "devil", "baal", "eru" and so on....

{88} = original tag for 88 before the server division. Rekrul was in the clan as well as many others.
iNcontroL is a variety of things. the iN part came from my departure of clan IN but I still really liked the ID. Out of respect I kept the IN part but made it iN as to make some distinction. controL merely derived from my general mentality with this game and style. I am ultra aggressive so typically I dictate the fights when and where. That doesn't always prove intelligent but it is how I enjoy to play this game

PTC was a clan my friends and I made years ago... My dad and I created a youth football program in our area and the Hurricanes was the name. I was Hurricane29 (I'm #29....), then changed it to Hurricane for the clan.

i love how when bub and lil sis "test out" the pipes they swerve maniacally into the other lane and almost hit a turning car and then jerk back into the correct lane.

Ha, I never knew you were the same guy as the IN Clan guy...

I just wanted an oxymoron for a name, because I always saw people with silly names and didn't want a "serious" one, so to speak. So I came up with SweeTLemonS. I just like the way it looks capitalized like that, the [TPR] is from here, which Steve made me a member of.

On TL.Net:
HeadBangaa = headbanger (i like rock 'n roll) + bangaa (a creature from Final Fantasy)
I thought it was a clever way to let people know, you know, that I rock, but that I'm also a brainy-nerd at heart.

On BNet:
SCV-Pud = "pud" is a funny word (synonym for dick, teehee!). I've use it in most of my bnet tags because it makes it easy for all of my friends to recognize throughout the on/off years of gaming I go through! SCV was not a clan when I made the tag like ~5 years ago, I just thought it sounded good in front of pud.
People who fail to distinguish Socratic Method from malicious trolling are sadly stupid and not worth a response.

when i was 14-15 i started online gaming i started online gaming with command and conquer i think. so i needed a good username which the others would fear. so as a 12 yearold i thought well if you put DARK before your the first letter of your actual name it would be scary...

so my first nick "The_Dark_J" (my name is jonas) ^0^;; ). but when i started playing bw, it was just too complicated as a name with this underscores and too long too. so i decided to shorten it: darkj was the solution. and after a few years i stopped calling me dark and just named me TheJ. and thus they started calling me daj cuz the was (still is) often shortened with da, so basically just because me and everyone else was too lazy too type a 4 letter name, im called daj nowadays ^0^;; and btw. the j is pronounced jay ^^ and not "dge" like in edge (many people from europe do that ^0^;
Dear God, my brilliance is becoming a bit of a burden.
