Recall the discussions of `if it had been a real referendum, how would have Crimeans voted?' Well, here's a pretty thorough study into the moods of Crimea ahead of the crisis:

So basically they prefer relations with Russia but don't want to be part of it.

according to that study reported result seems likely, considering that it shows a heavy pro-russian sentiment and was conducted before yank's legitimate govt was ousted by violent demonstrations spearheaded by militant anti-russian fascists one of which now holds position in govt. if you'd take a similar survey now, it would not look pretty for ukraine.

or when you say 'real referendum' do you mean in a world where this overthrowing did not happen?

Once again, your claims baffle me. Explain how you conclude that `93% of 83% of the population want to join Russia' from this study.

Furthermore, no. A real referendum is one which is considered free and fair, occurring within legal bounds.

No it doesn't.

The poll shows 40% of crimeans identifying as russian, 15% as tartar, 15% as ukrainian and 24% as crimean. Just considering the people identifying as ukrainian/tartar combined with the reported turnout makes the outcome pretty impossible, as those two groups would be extremely unlikely to vote in favor.

In my opinion biggest fuckup with Crimea situation for the world is that mostly Russia but also US, UK and rest ignored the deal with Ukraine about keeping its territorial integrity in exchange for Nukes.
This development in Crimea is not going to make it easier with NK, Iran and possible others in future...

That looks like pretty legit picture about what was happening in Crimea yesterday.
It's former special correspondent of Lenta.ru btw, he's on Ukraine for a month already or even more.
If someone has problems with translating it, ask me later i will translate everything.

Damn that's long, but what I could understand fit what I've read from other sources or seen on pictures and videos.

Yes, speaks for itself in that Europe and the US will never call it legal because it's not in their interests, most other countries don't care and/or don't want to piss off the EU/USA, and some countries that want to stick it to the US say it's legit.

It says nothing more than everything that's already happened. The EU and USA don't like something and want everyone else to toe the line, and the countries that don't like toeing the line are sticking their middle fingers up.
Big whoop, welcome to world politics.

'how would they have voted?' - i'd expect it to be massively pro-russia considering that report and the circumstances leading up to the referendum. i don't think the 15% who identified with ukrania then would vote in favor of what they surely consider an illegetimate govt with fascists in its ranks that overthrew the president they voted for, i'd prolly think around -23% of them would.

The EU and US should gain something somewhere from this situation, else they would not even bother about the territory called Ukraine. I never forgot the war in Yugoslavia, how many people died there. The west interviened way to late and many people suffered because of that. The reason could well be that there was just nothing to gain from keeping the peace early, as the west mostly "helps or goes to war" when there is something to gain, like oil, strategically important territories or similar. Just like Russia.

I tend to think that the euromaiden supporters wish for more prosperity, but to be frank, as a european i dont think trading one world power for another makes your situation any better. Dont forget that the West will likely profit more from the outcome in the Ukraine then the Ukrainiens themselves will, else EU+US would not even help. And the leaders of euromaiden also seem corrupted and have ties to the mob, so your basically trading one corrupt politician for another....

I think that overthrowing the government was couragious but also dangerous. I dont understand how the people will benefit from this in short/long term and the insecurity this provides for next winter. Yes, it gives hope for better days but then they must assume that the west is interested in there wellbeing, which i sincerely doubt. It will be interesting how this develops as its a tricky chessgame now.

All it says is that they're not ready to take sides on this issue.
History will sooner or later sweep the European Union away without mercy.

Wow, since people have been constantly repeating here that there are about 80% russians that comes as a bit of a suprise.

Sevastopol is what they are mostly concerned with. With Russia, it has always been about the warm-water port. This goes back centuries.

Actually, the standard figure is 60% Russian. And of those 60% not everyone has to identify themselves as Russian, especially as `Crimean' is available.
