Caruana has been so impressive... Happy for him! I wonder if Carlsen is saving some of his preparation for Anand. He seems to have been experimenting with openings lately.

Yeah, Caruana's play simply is amazing. I don't really understand Carlsen playing these offbeat openings, and also that he made so many mistakes during the ending against Topalov. Just doesn't seem to be his tournament.

I wonder if the recent WC controversy is playing on his mind and affecting his play.

He could be wanting to hide some of his opening preparation as well.

That's the bulgarian flag. Also looks like Topalov has good winning chances right now, which is actually not to good for the tournament because MLV basically is the last guy in the race.

Is there even a chance for people to catch Caruana? I feel like he could draw the rest of the games and I doubt someone else is going to get 5 wins in a row on the back side.
Every night I pray for TL to give me my SAD Boys flair, and every morning I wake up disappointed.

Relatively little practically speaking, but it's still possible. Of course I'm just hoping for him to go 10/10. He kibitzes on ICC quite often, really friendly and seemingly level-headed guy.

I don't know how FIDE ratings are calculated, but if Caruana finishes 10/10, anyone know if 1) he will surpass Carlsen as highest rated player and 2) he will break Carlsen's record for highest ever rating?

He gains ~5 points per win right now and he's 2830.6 currently. Finishing 10/10 would put him about 2850, short of both Carlsen currently (2862.4) as well as his as his all-time high (2889.2).

Considering his 6 wins got him from 2801 to 2830, he will not get the record.

However, at an ELO of 2830, winning a game against a 2790 ELO player, which I guess is roughly the average of the tournament, you will receive an ELO of +4.4. So if he wins everything, he could end at 2848~.

Meanwhile, I believe Carlsen's ELO is currently 2862.4, as I saw it posted in chat when watching the tournament today. A 2860 player losing vs a 2790 ELO player loses -6, or -1 if he ties. So technically 3 losses and a tie would bring him down to 2843~, and below Caruana.

TLDR: Mathematically possible, realistically speaking a 0.05-0.1% chance.

By the way, are the rating points they win calculated based on the live ratings of their opponents or on the monthly ratings (which will not have changed in the course of the tournament)?

Nakamura losing to Carlsen yet again, happy for Magnus ,-)

3 round to go, 2nd place is Carlsen with 4 points.
So Caruana is at least guaranteed 2nd, right?
Or is Caruana's tie break score good enough already for him to secure 1st even if both Carlsen and Caruana finishes with 7 points?

Looks somewhat cramped now for Carlsen. I don't know why he's playing these strange openings. I don't really think he needs to hide preparation from Anand if that's why he's playing so differently right now.

I don't see any other explanation. That's also the interpretation I read on europe-echecs.com (French website) - him experimenting with lines and not showing too much. But, well, it's anyone's guess.
