It's not really clear what the DUP actually wants to me. As far as I can work out, they want to remain in the EU, but as a consolation prize they are absolutely determined to have a hard brexit so there is a trade border with Ireland.

So Trump has accused The Sun of 'fake news' because apparently they didn't include all of the nice things he said aout May in their article.
Its the press conference everyone expected, where he doesn't backtrack but claims everyone else is lying, and then says how amazing he has been since arriving here and how he has great respect for May (I'm assuming this respect is extremely conditional).
No-one has asked him what exactly he has against Sadiq Khan compared to other mayors of cities hit by terrorism though.

How the fuck do you resign on mass and then go to another world leader to attack the current PM and undermine her position? I am not into UK politics all that much, but I wouldn't think that is going to go over well with voters. It would be like a US senator going to the PM of the UK to attack a sitting President. This seems like a most ill conceived plan.

They know they can’t win the next election anyway.

More accurately, they know the results of the next election hinge on getting a Brexit they can laud as a win, in a situation where a loss can and probably will be devastating for the Conservative Party as a whole. Their base is increasingly leaning towards a hard Brexit that the Prime Minister absolutely doesn't want no matter what she says.

For them, it's make even the core voters angry, or piss off everyone else and try to win them back by making good on the vague promises of prosperity outside the bloc.

I think it makes more sense in that context. It's still incredibly risky and could backfire politically. They'll be getting a ton of shit for it behind closed doors for the exact reasons you're citing. That sort of thing is very much frowned on in our political sphere. It's why Gove and Johnson were absolute no-gos for PM after backstabbing Cameron. Everyone knew they were friends of his, so nobody wanted to reward them for their treachery.

I'll take a wild swing in the dark and say a combination of skin colour and saying mean things about Trump have an influence there.

Also, nice work, Trump. Now you've pissed on one of the only rags in the UK that doesn't hate your guts. I'll bet they appreciate that.

Fake news means stories he disagrees with. It’s a game to him, nothing more.

DUP's only red line is no border in the irish sea. the DUP do not want to remain in the EU, and want out of the customs union. however, if westminster proposes staying in the customs union, even the DUP will support remaining just to ensure there is no sea border. the DUP also supports a frictionless border between north and south as exists now.

Watching Trump fight off a journalism ecosystem that holds politicians accountable is wonderful to watch. It really puts into perspective how neutered the US journalism is.

She dealt with Churchill, who may be the single greatest, most impressive asshole the UK has had to offer in the 20th century. Trump ain't nothing.

From what I've heard of Churchill, he had a large degree of deference to the Monarchy, and was very close to King George VI (especially given the period when the former was Prime Minister and the latter King).

I imagine he would've been on his best behaviour around the Queen.

Churchill was an old school Englishman in many ways. He'd never have dreamed of stepping out of line around the queen. Plus I'm pretty sure our PMs are drilled extensively on the procedure.

I mean... can you imagine what our press would do a PM who bumbled along like Trump did there and completely fucked up the decorum?

You never, never walk in front of the Queen while inspecting the troops.

I suppose he probably refers to one of these quotes:
My dear you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be ugly

The women's suffrage movement is only the small edge of the wedge, if we allow women to vote it will mean the loss of social structure and the rise of every liberal cause under the sun. Women are well represented by their fathers, brothers, and husbands.

Is the last one actually genuine? It's awful.

First quote was directed at the socialist MP Bessie Braddock or the Conservative Lady Astor, the first female MP, nobody's quite sure which. It is possible that it's a fictional quotation as well, though it is very in-character and a lot of his witticisms and put downs are along those lines. Very acerbic, very sharp, very eloquent.

And yes, the second one's genuine. He was as conservative as they come, a true-blue British man of the Empire. And like most such people, he was a bit behind the times. It's partially why he tanked as a leader post-war. But you shouldn't take it out of context to demonise the man; that was a pretty standard view of women's place in society at the time.

It should also be noted that in actual politics he voted in favour of women's suffrage, despite his personal feelings on the subject, and he was generally regarded as being extremely respectful and polite towards the women he worked with.

He also had a pretty tough relationship with the suffragettes themselves.

Like most things involving Churchill, it's difficult to really pin him down on something. He said a lot of things that seem to clearly outline his feelings, but when you look at actions he often did the opposite.

I mean, here's another quote about him on the same issue (paraphrased from a letter he wrote): "the sex disqualification was not a true or logical disqualification, and he was therefore in favour of the principle of women being enfranchised"

I think it's more that he just didn't like the suffragettes. One did attack him with a whip once. It kind of biases a man. By the end of his life he seemed to be fully in support of women's rights and general equality.

On another note, apart from occasional blocking, I don't really care if he walks in front of her just because "she's the queen". Monarchy is outdated.

Also, Trump discussed Brexit with her.

Donald Trump has discussed his private conversation with the Queen whom, as well as being “beautiful inside and out”, thinks Brexit is “a very complex problem”.

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jul/15/trump-reveals-the-queens-private-views-on-brexit

‘We would make a great deal with the United Kingdom because they have product that we like,” Trump said. “I mean they have a lot of great product. They make phenomenal things, you know, and you have different names – you can say ‘England’, you can say ‘UK’, you can say ‘United Kingdom’ … the fact is you make great product, you make great things. Even your farm product is so fantastic.”

England == UK

This will pile on more pressure on Theresa May, if she has a poor performance on the Andrew Marr show I suspect she will be gone before the summer break.

How is that consistent? Restriction of movement and leaving the single market should necessarily involve a physical border in Ireland, does it not?
