Been wanting to make this topic for a while.
FWIW, I'm Chinese and my "hair style" is best categorized as "messy spikes". Basically I get a decent glob of hair wax, fix my hair into the way I like it, where it's just clumps of spikes going up or diagonal, w/e I feel looks fine at the moment. My problem is that the hair wax, considered one of the most efficient Japanese products (Gatsby Hair Wax, I have tried ultra hard but now I use matting type. I prefer matting type but neither actually do the job anyway) for hair holding isn't strong enough to keep it in that form throughout the day. I give it like a good hour or two of attending class or w/e before it begins collapsing. What results is a day of me constantly having to fix my hair so much that it's like a habit for me now, but eventually the hair wax just gives way then it's unmalleable forever.
I don't like gel because I don't like the "shine" and the non-clumpiness that gel gives me. I could be wrong though since the only gels I've tried were the max-hold LA Looks and LaBella gels. I also don't like how they make things look shaped that way, the way my wax does my hair is so that things look more natural (well having DBZ hair is obviously unnatural but still).
Basically my hair tends to revert to its original shape (going down on all sides like a freaking bowl cut).
I am looking for tips as to how to solve my problem either with a specific brand/type of hair wax/gel/whatever, or if there's any way I can train my hair not to fall into that flat shape.
Pics:
Left is original (slightly exaggerated, I took that a while ago for some reason), right is after a long, exhausting day in the sun at college orientation (that is exaggerated too, that's more like my normal hair w/o any gel).

When applying hair gel, first of all use an ultra-strong one, apply it to somewhat wet hair, and once applied take a dry towel and rub your hair all dry. After that you can shape the hair the way you want and apply a little bit (so as to not have the "shiny", or wet look) more gel maybe - for fixation where it's necessary.
Should stay for a long time, at least for me it holds all day (if I apply it the way you do it tends to eventually tire out and fall down due it's own wight and concentrated spread).

Cut it off all like this...
THIS
I'm cutting my hair like that, ever since I tried for the first time, it's soo much fucking amazing, to no do anything with your hair, do not have to spend time fixing it when it fucks up, and do not having to look at yourself and how fucked up your hair is when you wake up in the morning, and believe me, it is like that. Well, Since you and I, do not have the same style of hair, I would say, that you should try other products and stuff. When I have my hair fairly long, I usually fix my hair and do a MoHawk, I do it with some products, that my mom told me to use (she used to be a hair stylist). If you have any friends, that do the same thing as you do, try to search opinions with them and see what kind of products they use.
Btw, sorry for the picture, I couldn't find a better one.

I use a strong wax and it works, though i dont use it spikey.
There are other products that you put on your hair, dry it with heat and it stays really really solid in its place, i dont remember the name. When i come back from a movie i will look for it.
|
I too am Chinese, and I faced the exact same problem. Worse, in fact, since, long or short, my hair refused to stay in place. I've stopped caring about it. It seemed to best solution...
You might try a different hairdo though. It might suit your hair better. Xellos's hairdo, for instance, is quite neat.
|
just use really strong glue
People also randomly come and sniff your hair as a bonus.
|
They have the new GATSBY CLAY! <_< i dunno. use gel or wax. it wears off, that's life.
|
Thanks Mynock, never heard of that before but I'll try it soon.
(if I apply it the way you do it tends to eventually tire out and fall down due it's own wight and concentrated spread).
This is exactly the problem, I can already tell once I finish doing my hair in the morning that it's really fragile =/.
Funkie, I'm not gonna shave my head, thanks anyway . I agree though, when I wear my hat out because I'm too lazy to mess w/ my hair it's really convenient
Thanks IntoTheWow, looking forward to it
Story: I've looked for different hair styles and stuff, particularly Japanese styles such as these: http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/mens/index.html I also can't imagine in my head what I'd look like with some of those styles, and I don't want to end up cutting my hair and devoting a bunch of time and effort on it just to find out that it looks horrible for me (imo different shaped heads are better suited for different styles and stuff like that)
But I didn't really find one that I could do immediately (usually because my hair is too short, my top is maybe about 3 inches right now), and I didn't like many of them either.
Radu, could you recommend a specific brand or something?
Zalfor, thanks, I try my local asian markets and see if they have any of that. Googling up "gatsby clay" images shows me some hope

Since the subject is kinda here, does anyone know of something that will keep your hair looking more stringy? That's the only way I can really describe it. When my hair gets long it looks like shit when it's dry, but totally badass when it's wet. So, my dilemma is that I have to constantly keep my hair wet to make it look decent, then everyone is asking why I wet my hair, or just let it look like shit. I kinda want something like gel that will keep it looking wet, but I don't want it to be so hard. I want my hair to flow freely. It's hard to describe...
Something to make it look KINDA like this, but not nearly as gay, and more seperated than that.
|
Shave your head, save yourself loads of trouble
|
emm that happens to me too and i dont like gel anymore(because it's oily and shiny"...
I use gatsby too! but when it falls I can kind of reshape so it stick up again( but cant restyle wat i really want).. mostly, the longer the hair, the harder for it to stay spiky top.
try to use this technique.. but dont follow the example pictures.. http://www.gatsby.jp/en/technique/02.html
time and sweats seem to be the cause...

Try rubbing some (good quality) gel all over your hands (but not tons, cause then your hair will get too stiff) and working it through your hair while it is still wet. Then shake your head and let your hair fall naturally or style it with your fingers however you want. Usually a good gel will keep the wet look if you apply it to wet hair. If that doesn't work, try mousse.
It's not really "stringy" that you want...more like..."choppy", or some other euphemistic term like that. Stringy makes me think of Emogirl videos. "my hair is an expression of my pain..."
|
To thread starter: gel is the best way to hold spikes. You just need a higher quality gel. With hair products you really do get what you pay for.

I've never seen hair so romanticly ready in my life.
You may want to find an easier way to keep your hair during class, and just do it when you go out. Although that sounds pretty gay now that I've said it aloud.
Might want to try different products, and maybe some hair spray. I have thick greasy black nerd hair (but black instead of red,) and the only thing I find that keeps it up is: Hair gel in after shower, hair spray (I'm not sure what brand it was,) and then letting it dry before I let anything touch it.
|
Good discussion so far, a big thanks to those who've helped me, keep it coming. I think I'll go out to the market tomorrow and check for gatsby clay and try that out, as well as go to a local hair stylist and look for some high quality gel.
|
i am chinese and have the same hair as you, my advice is just to grow it long and forget about the rest. If you insist on leaving it short, then i recommend hair wax, i picked up some shiseido hair wax in japan once and its the best hair styling product ive used by miles. Mainly because it is designed for hard asian hair unlike LA looks or whatever else those soft haired white people use.
|
Japanese gel is indeed very good. It's like viagra for hair. But sometimes, nothing can help your hair short of a miracle. Mine resisted 4 hours of rebonding to curl outwards like it normally does when long. Therefore... gg.

Any recommendations on a type of gel to use? Just think of the way your hair is when it's wet, and I want THAT look, basically. Probably not as long as your hair though.

Wow, nice hair.... I can never do anything to mine. It's slightly curly/wavy. Gel makes it look like it was matted down by rain....

I have exactly the same problem. I went to a styler (after going and asking in several places where i had my hair cut and no good answer. When i saw this girl she told me that my hair lacked hrmm i dont know how to say it english but as like it was dehydrated. So she told me to use some (language barrier here) 'humid' creams. We call them "cremas humectantes", which basically hydratate your hair again. The are the kind of creams you put on after a bath and no need to take it out with water. Over that you can put some wax in order to have more control over your hair + wax has oil so it keeps your hair more humid for longer (and it keeps the water in your hair from going out , sorry i dont know how to explain better).
In case you wonder about the products, here is what i use having the same problem as you.
http://www.americarx.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5541 (for rehydrating my hair) I use this only sometimes or when my hair is too long because it keeps it pretty in place.
http://www.beauty-mart.com/user/catalogue/product_detail.php?productid=7696 (this is the wax that has oils, etc)
http://www.dove.com.ar/comoestatupelo-result-therapy.jsp The second one form the right is the humid cream im talking about,
Dont worry about having to buy all this stuff. you will probably be good with the humid cream you use for combing only.
I have had that wax thing for over a year using it whenever i go out (college or anything) and i still have more then 1/3 of it :S

try this:
apply your gatsby or whatever on moist hair. Use a hair spray on it after. Then use a dryer(low power) on it.
This is what my friend does to turn his hair into nails. He uses gel tho so im not sure how it would turn out with your product.
|
Yea you gotta apply Gatsby when your hair is MOIST not dripping wet or Completly Dry. Hair Spray does help a lot, However Gatsby is not such a Great Wax Brand but yea Its fucken good for its price.
|
|
don't spike your hair or you'll look like some sort of gay metrosexual douchebag.
honestly.
it sounds like your problem is that your hair is thin (gel doesn't last and hair falls flat), and i have the same problem myself. i use a product that is supposed to make my hair fuller, and it does work to some extent. i suggest you get a product like that, and i wouldn't be to picky about what one it is. mine cost only about six bucks, so they are probably all decent.
another thing you might consider is getting a new haircut. short hair is best for thin hair, since hair looks thicker towards the roots. a short messy cut would be good.. something like the guy in the middle of the second row on the asian hair styles site.
|
Dude its just hair. Grow it long, lift weights, be the chinese fabo. Long hair makes em wet, I tell you this as a fact.
|
Alright it looks like I have a bunch of experimenting to do tomorrow. I'll try the wax on moist hair (for what it's worth, I usually do my hair when it's pretty moist anyways) with hair spray + hair dryer. If that doesn't work I'll look into the products mentioned in the thread. Thanks a lot for your help guys.
Glyo: Yeah I know what you mean, but this is the first hair style I've had that both me and my girlfriend agree on. (I used to have short hair, then red hair (uhh that was for halloween when I was Reno from FF7), etc.) and like I mentioned before, I don't want to take any risks with any new styles unless I'll be sure it'll look okay on me. About the hair fuller, what does it do exactly? Make your hair thicker? I'll try it out, but it makes me sad seeing asian guys on the street with cool hair that stays up and it seems like they have thin hair too (especially some Japanese guys, but I think their hair just stands up naturally or something, I don't know :X ). Thanks for your help
|
For a while i tried experimenting with lots of different hairstyles/gel/wax and just decided to shave off all my hair. Its so much simpler.
|
I'm chinese/japanese and I have exactly the same problem as you. In class my hair would fall and I'd be like ah crap it's like I never styled it at all. I tried Gatsby, Lucido, everything...I even tried Sebastian Crude Clay (has titanium oxide and diatoms and everything) which was $20 and still didn't hold it up like I wanted it to...I was almost going to give up on looking asian...
Then I found ICE Spiker Glue. It is the most amazing thing in the world, only problem is learning how to apply it, you have to squirt a bit in your palms, rub your hands together, run it through your hair then style it before it becomes impossible to style and your hair starts to tear out because it's so sticky...BUT I CAN GET THE STYLE I WANT SO IT'S WORTH IT.
http://www.sleekhair.com/2459.html
I bought the 16.9 oz pump and it has lasted me FOREVER, about a year now...if you have 20 bucks to spare it's all you'll ever need, I guarantee it (I sound like a commercial but I just want to help a fellow SCer in need, my SC skills suck so I might as well help with something I know =P)
P.S. Here's how my hair looks when I use it: http://photos-906.facebook.com/ip003/profile/1792/28/n3221906_18611.jpg
It works for pretty much any style, I mean the stuff holds like glue (it may or may not actually be)

Well, not as much as the OP does, but you can't go out with ratty looking hair. I mean, granted, I am incredibly good looking so my hair doesn't matter that much, but still, you don't want to look like a slob. I'd imagine you don't see many people at all though, if you don't understand what I'm saying.

you know that guy from static-x. ask him what gel he uses.
|
Is there like a gel or anything that makes hair stick up but not be all crunchy? Like make it stand but still feel like hair?
|
Most brands of wax do that, if they work with your hair...Like I said above I use ICE Spiker Glue and it has incredible hold but surprisingly it doesn't feel stiff like gel, it's just a little sticky.

Hmmm I go for a similar "spikey messy" style as you but in a slightly different way... I use a wax that feels almost like clay from a local salon and it works pretty good. But yeah, I need to find some better techniques because sometimes nothing works. I think I need to learn how to stylize too, but taking too long annoys me in the bathroom. Maybe a more accurate haircut for my style would help, but whatever.

Your hair just looks too long to hold up for as long as you want it to. This is when I get my hair cut, once its either so long in the front its goofy or it falls down to the side.

No, it's not conditioner. It's a mosturizer for hair. Revitalizer is probably something else it commonly gets called.

Sculpting lotion is the best imo. The saloons uses them while styling and hairdressing. Hardly sees them use clay or gel nowdays. It's easy on and easy off and stays in shape rather long. The downside is probably the mulas you pay for it.

Hair spray will keep that bastard up for hours. Only bad thing is it's sticky =( It'll make your hair smells nice though lol

I'm asian and I prefer my head to be shaved as much as possible. I prefer not to give a shit about how I look and what other people think about it, I am who I am and that's how that it works. (No I'm not dirty, I keep myself level, but I don't really care if people don't like the way I look, and if you use the argument that girls won't be attracted, then that's the kind of girls I don't want to be with, attracted to outer beauty more than what a person is made up of -_-; Plus,I live in NY, many tend to be sluts/money whores/materialistic bitches, so many of them, I swear )

I am trying to get a hairstyle like in these pictures:
The third picture is from the Japanese movie, "Go". So my question is.. How???
My hair is long enough, and after a shower, I can blowdry it to look somewhat like it for an hour if I'm lucky, but I have not figured out how to make it stay.

I'm no expert on hair, but bear in mind that movies have people ready to retouch hair after every single scene. Many of those hairstyles can't hold past ten minutes. They need regular maintainence.

You can probably train your hair to that style. With some long hair, a little water here and there, some use of your hand, and a few weeks time, you can work your hair towards that, and make it easier to achieve if you do use gel with it.
The back of my head is something similar to that of the third picture. I wet my hair and hands a bit, and push my hair up. If Im laying down or sleeping, I keep my hair pushed up with the pillow. It took me a few weeks, but I eventually got the outward spiking hair thats respikes itself when I comb my fingers through it.
But your hair length kinda makes a difference too. Ive had two haircuts over the past six months, and I havent been able to get back the style that was just perfect for me.

loool hey im chinese too and i have the exact same problem using that gatsby matte type shit XDD omg my gf says i look really retarded fixing my hair every other minute and yeah hmmm lol and as for the final fantasy type hair..probably ..possible.. but.. a shitload of gel and shit.

I dont recommend wetting your hair before applying the products. What I usually do is blowdry it until its puffy, then work from the back to the front in a "brushing" motion so that the glue/wax only touches on the tips of the hair. Dont try to put too much on your bangs, its really hard to style correctly and if you applied it properly from the back to the front you should have a lot more control over your hair than if you had applied it the other way (that is, from front to back).
I disagree with the advice to use expensive hair products. The best results ive seen came from shitty matte waxes at Big Lots. Im guessing expensive hair products typically assume you have an expensive haircut to match. Youre not really supposed to use a lot of gel/wax/watever - if you see the directions on most containers youre only supposed to use a tiny amount. anyways, if you really want your shit to stay, use blowdryer --> glue + hairspray. Be prepared to lose some hair and use a hell of a lot of shampoo to get it out though.

I can not find a single reason why you would not want to look your best. Good looking men are more successful than average looking men, women (all sorts, not just materialistic whores) will be more attracted to you, and you will feel better about yourself. Sure, it's some work, but it's defenitley worth it. Nobody likes an unkept guy.

It does. My girlfriend brought a picture of the haircut she wanted into Hair Masters, and they gave her something so completely different it was hard to believe they even looked at the cut in the picture. It didn't look bad... but not was she asked for.
On the other hand, I go to a small salon and have a consistent hair dresser (which helps a lot) and I always get what I want. It's not even very expensive, at $25.

Well for an update on my problem if anyone cares (since this has materialized into a central post for all those looking for hair advice),
I looked all around (irl) and couldn't find many of the products mentioned, I did find "Got 2B Glued" or whatever. It's sticky, and it holds some part of my hair well, but it doesnt hold EVERYTHING together very well. What I do currently is first go through my hair with got 2 b glued and then reinforce it with my normal Gatsby Wax (which is depleting so I hope to find a longterm solution soon). The two combined work a bit better, but its ridiculous to have to buy and use two products in order to get the effectiveness of one product.
Anybody have any experience with Aquage Transforming Paste? I was also recommended this by a friend. I can't really find anything in any stores or salons so I'm gonna order some of the products I want off the internet.

mess with your hair daily for a bit and eventually it'll take the form you want i don't do anything with mine and i let it grow to be kind of long and i guess i'm lucky because i think it looks pretty good - ironically it looks bad when i use gel and stuff on it or have greasy hair. it looks smooth, falls nicely, and is kind of spikey looking around my eyes and ears. the only problem i have is people admitting that they thought i looked really depressed or emo before they got to know me =( having a consistent barber, as someone mentioned, is very important if you want to get a specific look. i've had the same one and same look for almost two years, at 25 dollars a haircut around every three months.
the final fantasy and supersaiyan hair is possible: walking by a random barbershop in new york city's chinatown i saw a guy with goku's triangle-spiked hair! the asian guy even had his hair dyed blond and it looks kind of crazy weird on a real person's head X_X but i know it's definitely doable. it was a really well-done copy and i guess is impressive, but the gel cost and maintanence must be insane =)

Anybody know where to buy gatsby hair wax online? There aren't really any japanese stores where I live. I saw some on Ebay but shipping was pretty steep and I don't have an ebay account.
Also this is slightly off topic but does anybody know a good conditioner for really really hard and thick hair.

This stuff really is glue, you can apply it wet or dry... easier to apply when your hair is slight dampened though. My bro uses this stuff to get the Super Saiyan 23123 look, like 5 inch spikes. I just use it to spike my hair (nothing crazy) and if i use too much, my hair feels like a helmet. Haven't tried Gatsby though so I can't really compare.

Panorama, you could try with hair clay. It elaves hair dry compared to wax (which leaves it oily in the good way). But some friends use it and told me its stronger.

where in NYC can i buy Gatsby Moving Rubber Wax?
anywhere close to either SOHO or 42nd street?
edit: no, i don't wanna buy it online. thanks.

Flushing, maybe K-Town... I think. It's about 20$ (whereas it's about 7$ in Japan).
I personally don't like Gatsby, I like a brand called Uno (by Shiseido), it's a higher quality brand, see if you can find that.

There's a shop called Sunrise (if i remember correctly) in Soho. You have to make sure you check out the 2nd floor to look for it though
