You miss the big picture.
Right now the Euro-NAmeri-Sunni-SPacific bloc is waging proxy wars with the Russo-Sino-SAmerafrican-Shiite bloc. The main conflict line goes like an obvious diagonal from the baltic through Ukraine and Georgia down through Turkey, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia, but actually all the conflict lines are a contiguous great circle if you draw them on Pangea, dividing the world in two.

In this accurate context, the N. Korean missile "crisis" is just a geopolitical showdown between US and China over military dominance in the NW Pacific ocean.

People are idiots if they think that N.Korea would ever attack using its nucelar warheads -- those are its big stick with which it alternatively bullies both blocs to give it money and stuff in exchange for a round of threats followed by 1) more threats or 2) a cooldown period depending on which bloc offers more stuff and wins the round.

People are equally stupid if they think the US or China will actually do anything about it. In the grand scheme of things, nobody gives a ________ about N.Korea and N.Korea doesn't give a ________ about anybody else either -- which is EXACTLY why the blocs are facing off diplomatically using N.Korea like a "diplomatic DMZ".

Yes, there always is that 0.0001% possibility that S.L. Kim goes insane and forgets that it's not going to benefit him any to fire the nukes. But guess what? Only idiots make that kind of decision, not leaders.

True leaders are psychopaths - every action is weighed on how much the cost/benefit ratio to themselves is.

There is 100x the risk of some idiot environmentalist messing around in the ruins of Fukushima and causing a meltdown than there is of N.Korea launching a nuclear missile.

That aside, N.Korea may eventually decide to take non-nuclear action. It's probably going to be invited soon to join the war in Syria, just like S.Korean troops were invited to join the Iraq war.

Wait, people are actually making money off of this dick measuring contest? Dayum, what has humanity devolved to

Im pretty sure psychopath, orange clown and similar also have been used to describe Trump on various publications cover.
Doesn't mean I wouldn't bash Merkel for using those terms in her speeches even though I consider them accurate.

A North Korea nuclear test over the Pacific? Logical, terrifying

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho suggested leader Kim Jong Un was considering testing “an unprecedented scale hydrogen bomb” over the Pacific in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat at the United Nations to “totally destroy” the country.

i think anyone stupid enough to not call his bluff his just asking for it. and i don't think the US should suffer due to a few disbelievers who merely thinks he has an inferiority complex. you're talking about a young hot head put in a position of power, who has offed his own family staff that were seniors and loyals to his own father, at the mere drop of a hat.
has caused multiple earthquakes progressively larger in nature due to testing, CONSISTENTLY, and i repeat CONSISTENTLY over what? 5-10 years? if starving your own people due to finding the funds to support this endeavor doesn't show you he's serious, you're a complete fool quite frankly.

i don't think people were laughing before when terrorist took action for making fun of their religion. i don't think people bluff at people who claim they'll shoot schools either. but this is far and wide much bigger than any of those. this is a nuke, he stated his intention for some time, he has shown proof, through evidence via earthquakes / satellites, the guy is a psychopath clearly, and he's put in a position of power where he's capable of doing it. we clearly need to take action on this.

i'm all in arms for freedom of speech, but at the same time there's common sense. why provoke another man to such an extent they need to react this way? i'm not saying kim is right in any scenario for his outrage and inability to control his own temper, but the hate for americans is very real....ffs the guy's family was capable of indoctrinating and brain washing a whole nation successfully...does that not tell you anything at all? i honestly doubt the conquest stops there. hes the closest thing to a living hitler outside the genocide thing, but there are striking similarities. it doesn't help that he's a young leader who needs to show proof of his worthiness to the throne. and in all honesty what better proof is there to your people (that you brainwashed) that you will attack the enemy and actually do it?

on another note, if anyone thinks they're actually idiots, i don't know what to tell you. they were capable of hacking sony's psn server..for a nation that you think is cut off from technological developments, to be able to hack and steal info from a modern day company shows you how much they pulled the rug from under you.

Well, there was a clear reason why even USSR refused to share nuclear technologies with NK back in days.

Basicly because of a possible current situation.

North Korea Launches Another Ballistic Missile
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/north-korea-launches-another-ballistic-183437098.html
North Korea fired a ballistic missile in its first provocation since U.S. President Donald Trump labeled the country a state sponsor of terrorism earlier this month, Yonhap reported, citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The agency didn’t immediately provide more details on the launch. Japan’s coast guard said the missile fell into the sea near Japan.

North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 3, and has launched more than a dozen missiles this year as Kim Jong Un’s regime seeks the capability to hit the continental U.S. with a nuclear weapon. The United Nations has imposed stringent sanctions on North Korea for its weapons tests.

More from Bloomberg.com: These Eight Senators Can Make or Break the GOP Tax Plan

Trump on Nov. 20 labeled North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism because of its threats of nuclear devastation and support of terrorist acts including assassinations on foreign soil. North Korea responded by saying the designation reminds the country it should keep hold of its " precious nuclear sword. "

On Nov. 14, the U.S. wrapped up strike force drills in the Western Pacific using three aircraft carriers -- the first such exercise in a decade. North Korea routinely complains about U.S. drills in the region, using them as justification to ratchet up its own weapons program.

More from Bloomberg.com: Trump Calls Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ at Event to Honor Navajo Veterans

The launch ends a lull in test activity by the Kim regime. North Korea’s last provocation was on Sept. 15 when it fired a second missile over Japan in as many months.

As far as I've heard the North Korean economy has actually been doing fairly stable in recent times. They're having a sustained YoY 4% GDP growth. They're adapting to the reality of a long-term sanctions regime and making it work.

You don't develop nuclear weaponry and ICBM technology out of nothing. Even with help.

They've pretty much put all the eggs in one basket though. Now these eggs just happen to be nukes of course so at the end of the day the end result is even better for them I suppose in terms of deterrence. Militarily speaking nuclear warheads and the missiles carrying them are really the only things they've got going for them. The rest is pretty much outdated mid-20th century technology.

I might've misunderstood the latest posts in this thread though so forgive me if I have.

Building ICBM technology is definitely no laughing matter and represents some significant ability on the part of NK's technological infrastructure. It also represents a lasting form of deterrence against a military threat; looking at the specs on their rocket I really don't think that the missile defense farce will be anything useful to counter them. So now that they established a baseline stability, they can move on to rebuilding a more stable, lasting economy. No, it won't somehow lift them out of poverty, but it's time to come to terms with the fact that NK is smarter and more effective than we all gave them credit for in the past.

My point was that their nuclear program is the only really proper threat they have at this point as everything else they have is showing its age. Their air-to-air capabilities and resources are a joke, their failure rates with their indirect fire is at mid-19th century levels and so on. Of course a thousand howitzers in range of Seoul would still lead to casualties in the tens of thousands, not to mention all the other damage, so perhaps it's unfair to be nitpicky as an armed conflict would still be unacceptable. (Keep in mind not all DPRK artillery is in range of Seoul by the way)

You don't just convert said infrastructure, it's not that simple. However there's obviously no rush.

It doesn't matter so much what north korea has in conventional weapons as long as china supports them. Even if NK wouldn't have any military at all the usa or SK could still not invade because Chinese forces would stop them at the border.

There seems to be this idea that the usa can do basicly anything it wants to with north korea, like invade or maybe first strike or whatever. But that is just not the case,it is completely ignoring the geopolitical reality.
SK or usa can not attack north korea, just like they could not attack/liberate eastern Germany during the cold war.

This is a bit weird posts but he does make a few good points.

Anyway, this missile does look quiet impressive. It is not that surprising in the end.
Every Asian country has had a big boom in the past 20 years, techonology going forward with big leaps. Even NK is no exception to this.

Trump confronts perilous North Korean test

Washington (CNN)North Korea pushed President Donald Trump closer to a set of excruciating choices with its most potent missile test yet, which shattered a two-month calm in Northeast Asia and set nerves in Washington back on edge.

Trump, who earlier this year warned he would rain "fire and fury" on the isolated state if it continued to threaten the US or its allies, was relatively muted in responding to Kim Jong Un's latest provocation.
"I will only tell you that we will take care of it. ... It is a situation that we will handle," Trump told reporters at the White House.
