Final Voting is going to be over here, since i wasnt able to put all this together.
This is a reactionary thread to Vote in TIME magazine - Best video game because a lot of people critizised that the time's editorial departement has no clue about video games and has an incomplete selection of games.
So this poll will be different. You have time until sunday to nominate your favourite games of all time and then we start the vote. If i feel the selection might still be incomplete i could extend it to a week. I included half of the nominations now.. pretty exhausting, so i take a break. If you nominate a new title plz consider scanning the nomination list, if its already there or if it has no chance of competing. If thats the case, plz dont nominate that title. Feel free to give feedback if we need even more categories, if we should split or merge categories. Consider that categories should neither be too big or too small. and if categories are corectly listed.
Nomination period pending

Knowing your posting a thread in a SC/SC2/DotA2 forum, wouldn't you think the bias would skew the results? If you want something objective, making a poll here wont be it.
It would be impossible to objectively assign a value to all video games ever made. It ignores age, personality, talent, even gender. Every person has their own unique tastes. Trying to rank every game in one big list would just replicate the standard Mario Half Life Halo CoD Starcraft lists you see come up every year.
I think it will be very hard to get down to the best X Games for a vote.
My Top5 favorites of all-time are: #1 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #2 MAFIA: City of Lost Heaven #3 Dragon Age: Origins #4 DeusEx #4 Fallout 3
btw is it true that we can only have polls with 12 options here? thats quite limiting :/ and it would make it a hell lot easier to create polls if you would add categories too. i dont know the genre of every game out there^^
You can probably make a poll on a third party poll website to circumvent the 12 options restriction. And just link to it then.
I'm also not sure if we should use all versions from a series? As in Age of Empires 1, 2, 3 but i.e. only WC 3. Would anyone really say Q1 was better than Q2/Q3? I dont know.
Best Shooter: Unreal Unreal Tournament
Best RPG: Might & Magic 3 Neverwinter Nights (1? 2?) Final Fantasy 6 Betrayal at Krondor (none of you will vote this piece of awesomeness ) shitton of other games you kids dont know about and therefore never vote!
Best Adventure: Monkey Island (1 & 2) Indiana Jones 4 Maniac Mansion Day of the Tentacle (MM 2) King's Quest (havent played all so cannot say which one was the best, for me 5) Quest for Glory 5
Best Stealther (?) Deus Ex (I'd put it there... dont know) Thief 2 Metal Gear Solid (I dont know which one^^) Splinter Cell (again no idea which one) Hitman (maybe?)
Best RTS: Dawn of War Company of Heroes
Best turn based strategy: King's Bounty Heroes of Might & Magic Jagged Alliance 2 UFO: Enemy Unknown Alpha Centauri Civilization
Best Indie: Minecraft Terraria
Best MMO: Ultima Online Everquest
I actually liked the "Best Freetime" sort of category from the TIMES list: Angry Birds Solitaire Minesweeper Microsoft Pinball
Best fighting game: SSBM SSBB (lol!) Street Fighter
RPG : Baldur's gate FPS : Half Life RTS : Warcraft 3 (hard to not scream BROOOD WAAAAAAR) Fighting game : Garou Mark of the Wolf Hack'n Slash : Diablo 2 Racing game : TrackMania Platform : Super Metroid Other : Minecraft
Definitely need to specify instead of list series. It would be a travesty if all Mario games got lumped into one category, because some of the Mario games stand above most other games in the series. (Super Mario bros. III for example)
Best Shooter: COD4 (say what you want, its an amazing game, and set formula for so many clones its unreal) Goldeneye HOW coudl i have forgotten Jedi Knight - Maybe the best level design of any shooter i have ever played
Best RPG: Never really played many RPGs tbh
Best Adventure: Monkey Island 2 Day of the Tentacle Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Best Stealther Deus Ex Thief 2 Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Best RTS: Commandos Company of Heroes
Best turn based strategy: UFO: Enemy Unknown Civilization IV
Best fighting game: Street Fighter 2 WWF No Mercy WCW/NWO Revenge
This might be a crazy idea but why not do the poll by series first and then take the winning series and then have a seperate vote on the best in the series to find the best game?
This would allow people who didn't vote for that particular series as their favourite to have their say about which particular one is best, I think the results would be more inclusive and credible as a result.

Because alot genre are dominated by a few series, limit to one per series doesn't make sense.
The fact that no one has mentioned Tetris has kind of broken my heart. The game is so simple and clean, but it's competitive depth and the rewards you get for investing your time into it are amazing. Probably the most popular game of all time, if not the best.
Sim City Biker Mice from Mars Super Mario Kart Super Mario 2 + 3 NBA Jam Donkey Kong Country Kirby's Dream Course The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past .....

My response was to the 3rd poll in the OP, instead of doing one or the other, we do the former and then the latter. For each genre. There are no "limits".
RPG: Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII Shooter: Counter-Strike 1.6 Third Person Shooter: Gears of War, Resident Evil 4 Strategy: Ogre Battle 64 Fighting: Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter 2, Smash Bros. Melee Side Scroller: Mario 3, Sonic 3 Adventure: LoZ: Ocarina of Time
Bioshock Chrono Trigger Half Life 2 Halo: Combat Evolved ICO Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Metroid Prime Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Shadow of the Colossus Super Mario 64
I would like to nominate Borderlands (1 or 2) for FPS Baulder's Gate I and II for RPG and The Curse of Monkey Island for Adventure (which is missing btw)

To fix that we can just get everything on one big list, and then pick groups for them out of a hat and then trim until we have the final twelve. That almost works better because people are less likely to miss a game they wanted to vote for in more smaller polls than one large poll. Also we should exclude league of legends, as it also has a large following on team liquid.
Also nominating final fantasy tactics and and smash brother 64 and melee
Just do a thread where everyone lists their top 100 and assign a scaling point value, eg. #1 is worth 100 points and #100 is worth 1 point. Then have someone with uber time add them up.
Breaking down genres is unnecessarily complicated. Did you know there are actual debates on whether Zelda is an RPG or not? Is Braid a platformer or puzzle game? Is Mega Man 2 a platformer? Will you have 2D platformers and 3D platformers separate? What about jRPG and wRPG? Action vs Action Adventure vs Adventure, what's the difference?
Please, forget genres. Let the top games stand on their own.
I think some Bioware games deserve to be up here, like Mass Effect 1 and 2, Dragon Age, and Star Wars Knights of the old Republic, also maybe Telltale's The Walking Dead... all really quality games

honestly all are nostalgia purposed with me and my friends having an amazing time.
MoH:AA was probably the best FPS game I played outside of counter strike 1.6/S. I really miss playing that game, had some good times and made some good friends.
I think it should have a 'best of the series' rule basically, yes on the series question, but only consider the game you liked best in the series when answering.

I've played Jade Empire and Buldur's Gate as well, I just didn't enjoy them as much, because I didn't play them when they came out, I played them years later, when they were just too dated for me.
Altho i dislike the game FF 6,7,9 should be there without question, also Dragon age, I believe deserves to be on that list. Same with ME and clearly Kotor. Also no Deus ex :/ ? And what is the point of this ?
Overall favorite: Dance Dance Revolution (extreme, arcade - if you need a particular version) (misc/rhythm) + Show Spoiler +
Been playing this game for near a decade now, and it is easily top 3 for games i took seriously, while being top 3 for games I enjoyed. A rare game that mixed the two, since I play games for the competition, and a lot of them I enjoy the competition, but dont find the games very fun in their own right.
-I spent the most time practicing this game. -I spent the most money overall to play this game. -It was the first game I drove out of state to compete in a tournament for. -I still play it, and still give a damn the most if I mess up, and still get a smile when I exceed my expectations. -Hell, you look like an idiot playing it in public, and Im a shy person to begin with usually, and I STILL played this religiously for quite some time anyway. -Even now, after I stopped trying to be top level and just played "casually" (we will use that term loosely, it takes a LOT to walk by a machine if I have at least a dollar in my pocket and not play at least 1 set. (Generally, I would have to REALLY need a reason to not be sweaty to skip a set or two.... or ten....)
Chrono Trigger (straight up RPG) Quake 2 (FPS) R-Type 3 (Shmup) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (action RPG) Super Metroid (action/platformer?) Guilty Gear Accent Core (fighting game) Gran Turismo 3 a-spec (racing)
half life gave birth to not only hldm, tfc, cs, dod. if thats not the roster of the FPS winner then i dunno what is. quake yea, unreal tournament yea, but HL
RTS dune? kinda dated, c&c, epic. wc, sc. ta. supr comand. tough call on that one
mmo has to be wow. as much as i hate it, and stopped playing it 3 yrs ago. it was, and will be. what mmos are compared to. eve is a better game though
Instead of a poll in which people can only select one option, I wonder if it would be possible to have a way to give ranks to games in their sub-genres. So for example, if everybody either exclusively liked Ocarina of Time, FFVII, or Super Mario Bros 3 as their first choice, while say, Metroid Prime was second for everybody, if it were only possible to have one choice Metroid Prime won't show up as a contender even though in reality, everybody does like it quite a bit.
RPG: Witcher 1, Baldur's Gate 1, Diablo 2 (I do find it a bit odd putting these 3 games in one category, considering just how different they all are)
FPS (Single Player): Half Life 2
Overall pick: Warcraft 3 - TFT My immediate choice for overall would be DotA, but leaving that out, the game that made it all possible takes an easy second place. DotA 2 beats out the playtime on every other steam game I own - by a factor of at least 10 - so it's just hard to pick anything else.
You should not put Starcraft 2/Broodwar in the main poll, but then have the winner fight against them in the end in a kind of boss battle to see where they stand.
Metroid Prime Super Mario World Resident Evil 4 Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Smash Bros. Melee Golden Sun The Lost Age Zelda A Link to the Past Half Life 2 Zelda Twilight Princess Super Mario 64 Metal Gear Solid 4
out of ones not yet listed in OP, in no specific order:
Rome: Total War - RTS/Turn-Based Mass Effect (1, 2) - RPG Portal (1, 2) - FPS/Puzzle Diablo II: Lord of Destruction - Action-RPG Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword - Turn-Based Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Baal - really-fucking-hardcore RPG Dawn of War: Dark Crusade - RTS Tetris - Classic
would also have included (if not already nominated): + Show Spoiler +
Starcraft (1, 2) - RTS (cheating I know) Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne - RTS Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - FPS Half-Life (every game except Blue Shift) - FPS The Elder Scrolls (III, IV, V) - RPG
Id nominate Age of Empires: Rise of Rome (RTS) -where my love of rts started and still my favorite aoe game Rise of Nations (RTS) -an epic game with probably the best and deepest economy system in an rts Company of Heroes (RTS) -best tactical rts game ever made Counter Strike (FPS) - does anything need to be said Call of Duty 2 (FPS) -i played them all up to mw2 and while cod4 is good too, cod2 was much more skillful and the historical backdrop and weapons made it more appealing to me
Popularity contests around an art form isn't going to yield anything objectively agreeable since you could be a completely sensible intelligent person but simply not enjoy a genre of gaming. I for one can not bear to play puzzle games or point and clicks even though I understand the amount of work that gets put into them and recognize good design decisions, but I would never put one of the King's Quest games on the top of my list for that reason. But for what it's worth I would nominate:
Civilization Heroes of Might and Magic Dungeon Keeper Painkiller Silent Hill 2 Deus Ex Half life
You shouldn't make a normal vote in the end, most played games are not necessarily the best. The better way was, to let all people post a rating on the games they played (x out of 10 points) and then weight this in some way (just taking the meanvalue wouldn't give reasonable results for games played only by few people - I'm no mathematician, but there are probably people here, who can tell you how this is done best).
As for the games: RPG: Vampires the Masquerade 2: Bloodlines Gothic 1&2 The Witcher 1 Final Fantasy 7&8 Zelda Ocarina of Time
RPG: Pokemon (not sure which one to pick as there all good, even pokemon stadium on N64) RPG: FF7/8 (Again take your pick, 7 was probably all round the best, but 8 was more complete imo) Puzzle: Tetris (Sold so many titles!)
According to the nominees in the op, "best computer game" would be a more appropriate thread title. Well I guess since tl is a pc-game-community some bias is to be expected.
Warcraft 3 is the most influencial and important game ever made. Why?
-Blizzard got this brilliant idea of adding heroes to the game. People loved that so much that they decided to use the superb game editor and make a minigame within Warcraft 3 called Dota. Today millions of people play Dota and Dota clones all thanks to Warcraft 3.
-Before Warcraft 3 TD -or tower defense games werent really a genre in itself but Warcraft 3 introduced TD´s to the masses and today there exists several tower defense games thanks to the revelation the genre got in Warcraft 3.
-Playing with other people, or multiplayer as we call it, was never easier than in Warcraft 3. Battlenet, which was introduced with Diablo 1, was at its finest back then. It was simply put, perfect, if it wasnt for all the retarded hackers but the game is not to blame for that. I doubt that anyone can find a game with a better multiplayer component than Warcraft 3.
-With Warcraft 3 Blizzard added tons of layers to the allready rich Warcraft universe and they made sure the players got introduced to every part of it via excellent story telling, fantastic cinematics and mini cut-scenes. This inspired Blizzard to make an MMO based on mainly Warcraft 3. This game was called World of Warcraft, unofficial sequel to Warcraft 3. Today World of Warcraft is the biggest and most succesful MMO ever made. Even so much that almost every other MMO game tries to copy it.
Do all of the above make Warcraft 3 the best game ever made? Maybe not but I think its easy to argue that it does.

Chrono Trigger is just like the most overrated game ever. Well.. After Starcraft 2..
Either you've never played CT or you didn't play it right.
It was good/ok.. Just not the rare jewel people make it out to be, the story just felt kinda dumb to me (the whole idea of it, which makes it hard to really get into it). It was an "above average" JRPG, nothing more. I liked Breath of Fire 2 more.
Well.. I also never really got into the hype around ZeldaOOT, sure it was good but one of the best games ever? Nah.

Dota / Moba were plenty and the idea of heroes with fancy skills have been around for a long time.
Tower defense for me STOPPED being fun in Warcraft 3.
I loved the social perfection of SC/BW Battle.net. W3 was the first step away from actually talking to other people in order to play.
I'm not even saying that W3 isn't the best game ever (but I definitely don't think so), but if that's the case, it's not for these points.
Gothic 1 (RPG; perhaps the first game to have NPC's do something while idle and thus start making games more immersive) Gothic 2 (RPG; one hell of a tough game with the add-on installed) The Witcher 1 (RPG) The Witcher 2 (RPG) Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (TBS) Heroes of Might and Magic 5 (TBS; it improved on all the areas of HoMM 3, but the combat and level up system needs a bit of Internet research to be fully understood, after that you find out what a gem this one is) Half Life 1 (FPS) Half Life 2 (FPS) World of Warcraft (MMO; when vanilla got out it was a nice unique mix of great ideas put together and a nice community, perhaps the best combination ever)
I do have to point out that you can't really choose a "best" game, it depends what you look for when playing one. Nostalgia is one hell of a way to distort reality and it can come into play greatly. All in all I find it sad how older games can still compete with new ones even when you discount what features and innovations each brought when they came out.

Doesn't deserve a break :D morrowind and skyrim are "ok" even though they have massive issues i can see how you would think they are fun. Oblivion is AWFUL :/
My personal favs / games I spend most time on / games that were fun for the longest time:
RPG: Baldur's Gate series, Neverwinter Night Series Hack'n'Slay: Diablo II FPS: Quake III RTS: StarCraft, Warcraft 3 Fighting: Tekken 3 Others: The Sims 2

Indeed, so many fond memories of that game.
Some games I think should at least be considered for the list (not at all my personal favorites, but they are iconic games not yet listed). GTA IV Need for Speed (really just take whichever one is best, I only played 2). Age of Empires I Halo 1/2/3 Runescape
Some of my all time favorites which I'd like to nominate for the polls:
Gothic II - Night of the Raven (RPG) Heroes of Might and Magic III (turn based strategy/RPG) Half-Life 2 (Action) Jagged Alliance 2 (turn based strategy) Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (RPG) Command & Conquer: Red Alert (RTS) Super Smash Brothers (fighting games)

Agreed, this is the only game i looked for when i read the list, i still think i missed it, it MUST be there. Oh well.
And wolfenstein - enemy territory. Ocarina of time, Majora's mask, and enemy territory.
RTS: Starcraft Broodwar Turn-Based RTS: Heroes of Might and Magic III FPS: Counterstrike 1.6, Halflife 1, Halflife 2, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty 1, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Fighting: Tekken 5 Racing: Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Need for Speed: Underground 1, Need for Speed VI: Hot Pursuit 2 Puzzle: Portal 1, Portal 2 Open World/Sandbox: GTA 1, GTA 2, GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTA 4, Saints Row: The Third Sports: Pro Evolution Soccer 5, Fifa 98

Counter-Strike 1.6 Team Fortress 2 Portal 1 & 2 Sleeping Dogs Mass Effect 2 Half-Life 2: Episode 2 Age of Empires 2 Dota 2 GTA: Vice City Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Runescape Need for Speed(several games) Alan Wake
I am worried that including BW and SC2 would lead to a massive BW vs SC2 argument so I vote in favour of excluding them.
I don't have any new nominations. There's a lot of games already mentioned that I've never had time to play so I don't feel qualified to make any claims to know which game is best. Moreover, games that I played when I was younger are remembered more fondly than games I played more recently but I know my tastes have changed over time. In particular I have less time for gaming now. Hence my fondness for RPGs has decreased.
I remember that I really enjoyed Knights of the Old Republic but I didn't have a PC when Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 were released and I haven't had times to play long RPGs recently, which includes games like Fallout 3 New Vegas and Skyrim.
I'm also not sure what qualities a 'best game' should have, even within one genre. Should it be the most enjoyable? The most rewarding perhaps? Some games only become fun when you have put time into them to learn them. And with any game that has a heavy multiplayer component the quality of the community will massively affect the game.
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII should be on the RPG list without a question. Also, why is Age of Empires 1 not on the list?
And where is the Action/Adventure category? Loads of people will want to vote for the Zelda games, and rightfully so.
Anyway, the final vote will be hugely biased towards games made in the 90's and the first half of the 00's because of the age distribution on this site.
"Sneaky Action": Thief, Deus Ex 1 Western RPG: Baldur's Gate 1&2 Asian RPG: Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger FPS: Quake II, Counter Strike 1.6 Action: Devil May Cry 3 SE, Dark Souls RTS: BW Turn Strategy: Heroes of Might&Magic III MMO: EVE Online Racer: Need for Speed Series (acknowledgement of a long dynasty of games) Platformer: Jazz Jackrabbit

I agree with everything you said. But who could really call themselves qualified to judge something like this? No one has played all the games necessary to make a good call on what games are best. And how would you compare games from different time periods?
In the end this is just going to be a popularity contest where games that had a wide distribution will win over games with a more narrow focus and modest sales. The difference between here and the TIME vote is that we have an audience that is more skewed towards RTS. Let's just turn in our nominees, vote and enjoy thinking about the games we play and used to play.
My nominees for this is: Imperialism II Sensible Soccer
I have this feeling that this poll will end up being an epic fail.
As someone pointed out already - "best" is an inexorably subjective term and/or measurement. There are so many considerations to factor in, not to mention the demographic represented in this population, that the results of the contest will likely not be indicative of well...anything. But rather than fight a losing battle I suppose I'll nominate some games that may get overlooked otherwise.
Classics: Yar's Revenge Joust Galaga Tetris Super Mario Bros. 3 1942
Adventure: Little Nemo Dream Master Wizards and Warriors 2: Ironsword Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Toe Jam & Earl Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Diablo 2 Blaster Master
as long as the list does not include deus ex1, x-com (old ones, i played only terror from the deep) or planescape torment, i can´t see a reason to vote for anything ...
RTS: C&C Read Alert 2: not gonna mention SC:BW or SC2 here, and this is the next best thing for me. Fighter: Virtua Fighter Series, goddamn are these games deep and good and hard to master and just generally awesome. Platformer: Earth Worm Jim, still funny as hell to this day. Other: Zone of the Enders 2, visually the most awesome game I´ve ever played (relative to other games of its time and taking personal style preferences into account as well), one of the few single-player games I finished since my Sega Mega Drive/Genesis days.

Sadly, some people have never played Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake...etc. (much less heard of them).
It's the grandfather of console shooters, I guess.
Wolfenstein 3D was released on SNES in 1994 and Doom was extremely popular on SNES in 1995-1996. So much so that people were playing it at HS Halloween parties I went to.
Super Smash Brothers Melee NEEDS to be on the list. It was an esport for a long time (and actually still is, though there's not much money in it anymore).
Goldeneye 007 is not Action-Adventure, I mean the first sentence on Wikipedia says 'first-person shooter'. And way too little JRPG's on this list. That said Pokemon and Super Mario 64 are absolutely not Arcade games, maybe Sonic but still... Street fighter is more of an arcade game than Pokemon. The first Gran Turismo deserves to be in racing, and throw in Wipeout too... Monkey Island in Adventure
These are the games that came to mind immediatly that I think should be in the running. I'm sure I forgot a bunch of other ones and some of these are already in the OP but whatever. + Show Spoiler +
Strategy: Starcraft 2 Age of Empires 2 Red Alert
FPS: Quake Counter Strike Halo 1-3 Goldeneye
Action/Adventure: GTA:San Andreas Super Mario 64 Zelda: Ocarina of Time
RPG: The Witcher 2:Assassins of Kings Pokemon Red/Blue Deus Ex

Need to add The Last Blade 2 but not many people know it, so I guess it's Super Street Fighter IV for Fighting games(better remove "Street Fighter").
Could contribute with some Tactical RPGs but there are already some nice on the list, hm. Just gonna leave it like that.

Cool, I didn't know that.
Still, it was the first big shooter made for console, right? And the first that competed successfully with mouselook. I don't care for it in the slightest (never owned a console, never wanted to play a console shooter) but it is a very popular title.

looking forward to voting but im confused as to why mass effect is in the rpg genre and mass effect 3 is in action and adventure, and maybe im missing it but i dont' see mass effect 2 listed at all and that may be one of the most important. sorry aside from scbw and sc2 mass effect series is definatly in my top 5 but just curious all the mass effects have rpg elements but i guess i would call the action adventure but please add mass effect 2 aswell thx k look forward to voting.
I'm getting concerned... as long as Adventure as a single category includes games as completely dissimilar as Ocarina of Time and Grim Fandango, we can all be sure legitimate adventure games (GF, Curse of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and your personal favourites) will be squelched by misclassified action adventure like Zelda. No ill will to Zelda.
And that's not fair to Grim Fandango, yo. Numba woon.
The rest of my picks, disgustingly free of genre filtering:
Thief 2 (which should probably be included over Thief Dark Project if only one of the series is up for a spot) System Shock 2 Deus Ex Curse of Monkey Island Fallout 2 Vampire Bloodlines Half Life 2 Psychonauts Planescape: Torment Chrono Trigger LOOM MGS1 Gothic 2 Dark Souls
Some nominees from my personal list of great games:
Rayman 2 Grim Fandango Settlers 2 (and 3) Little Big Adventure (Best game of ALL TIME) Keen 4 (already mentioned, but hey) Yoshi's Story Civilization 2 Dune 2 Jazz Jackrabbit Worms/Worms 2/Worms Armageddon (Can't decide on which is best) Freelancer Bastion
Brainstorming or which games kill the most of my time!
Diablo Diablo 2 Counterstrike 1.6 Warcraft 3 Starcraft:BW Starcraft 2 World of Warcraft Commander Keen 4 Super Mario Land 1 (Gameboy) Super Mario Land 2 (Gameboy) Tetris (Gameboy) Command & Conquer Command & Conquer 2 Red Alert Super Mario Kart Mortal Kombat 2 Turtles in Time Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars: X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter Star Wars: Rebel Assault 1+2 Heroes of the Might and Magic 2+3 Quake 2+3 Half-Life Street Fighter 2 Turbo GTA 1+2 Tekken 3 Age of Empires 1-3 The Settlers 2 Anno 1602

Adventure Portal 2
Classics: Lost vikings Zork Galcon (Galaxy Conquest of 87 by Rick Raddatz)
RPG: Angband Dwarf Fortress (I was afraid you'd dare put this under "casual"
Don't forget to make an overall best category as well ^^
Edit: Actually, what do you think about the tournament format in each category? Like which of X and Y is more esports, aka the Hot_Bid format. And then a final bracket where the winner of each category goes into a finals bracket and there will be only one (which will be Starcraft ).
Who is the best composer of all times? A) Rihanna B) Bach.
Who would get the most votes?
The games I've enjoyed the most playing are: Starcraft: Broodwar (best of all time) Quake 2 Doom 2 Counter-Strike 1.6 Half Life Diablo 2 Red Alert (one).
Suggested Additions Strategy: Empire Earth (if you have not tried it go to gog.com and download it, it is amazing) Rome/Medieval 2 Total War (Best Turn Based Strategy on the market) Shooter: Golden Eye (why the hell is it not on the list by defalut?) Horror: Silent Hill 2 & 3 (if we take the no series thing, these was better than nr. 1) Alan Wake (Not very scary, but the story is one of the best there is) RPG: Mount and Blade Warband (don't even try to argue) Racing: Need For Speed Underground 1 & 2, Most Wanted 1 and Carbon (the games back when nfs-series was good) Adventure: The Legend Of Zelda Skyward Sword (no discussion)
ARPG should be it's own category, and possibly more distinctions between "RPG"s as well likely between story driven and big open choices/world driven. It's absurd to put things like ff/deus ex/dragon age, fallout/TES and diablo/borderlands all in the same group. There is more difference between them than between plenty of games already spread across the current categories of Shooter/Action/Horror.
Hack n slash: Diablo series Storybased: Max payne (especially the first one) RTS: Starcraft (SC2!) Shooter: Unreal tournament (2004 was the best one despite what the hipsters say ^^) MMORPG: Asheron's call - the first one!! On the PK server Role playing: Skyrim!!!
possibly add a shoot em up category: Gunstar Heroes Metal Slug Gradius
Strategy/Sim: Civ 2 (having 3 civ games might be overdoing it, and i love civ 4 and civ 1, but civ 2 to me was the biggest jump in depth from one to the next)
Overall though I love the list. Not sure if i like what genres you placed some of the games under, but i like it.

So JRPGs and RPGs, maybe Tactical RPGs for Tactics Ogre, Phantom Brave, Fire Emblem, Disgaea, SRT series, FF Tactics etc. And if not that, put Fire Emblem in the Strategy / Simulation category. Still, switch Street Fighter (I) --> Street Fighter 4 Need to add Burnout in the Racing category, F-Zero as well.
I would add Deus Ex : Human Revolution. Though still not as good as the first one, it was an excellent game, and a good Deus Ex (much more than the second one -_-).
Other than that, I'd add EvE online too. Pretty sick concept and universe...
Can we get F.E.A.R. 1 for shooter/story/horror and Armies of Exigo for Strategy? Also KKND for strategy =3 Also Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit(the original circa-2000) for racing?
The Masquerade: Bloodlines was probably my dearest game, such a shame Activision forced an early publish, thus destroying the studio and hurting the game.
Can we add Golden Sun to the list? It wasn't very widely played since it was only on the game boy advanced, but it was considered one of the best, if not the best games for the GBA. (both the original and Golden Sun The Lost Age, the third one wasn't very good though)
Also, oblivion and day of the tenticle is repeated in the list
Donkey Kong country Super Mario rpg legend of the seven stars Double dragon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game Excitebike (the nes version) mario bros 3 Streets of rage shining force Starfox 64 Harvest moon Bomberman Duke nukem kirby's dreamland
Look, the purpose of a "Best X Games of All-Time" List is to provide a definitive conclusion for video game criticism. It's the very last thing you do when you have exhaustive every last meaningful piece of advice you could give on this topic. There's no sense in acknowledging these awful lists from IGN and TIME and whomever (let alone responding to them) because there isn't a single person (or group of people) on this planet who are capable of undertaking that task. If you're going to do this, just acknowledge the absolutely unbearable painstaking amount of effort that is required to make a decent list and don't use the thousands of horrible game lists as a barometer for whatever the end result of this project may be. Thanks.

shmup is a comparatively narrow category, but if we are, you have to add the Touhou project series of games to it Otherwise, putting them under 'arcade' is fine
Don't get what the point of this is though, giant pissing contest between fans of different games? It's not like the results will change someone's opinion of a particular game or convince someone to go play a game they haven't before. At least for me, I don't look up popularity lists when choosing a new game to play...
Interesting categories! But we have to maybe go into detail there or I get crazy! Ocarina of Time, Shadow of the Colossus and Day of the Tentacle all "Adventure". Seriously? Are you f*** crazy? I would NEVER use those games in the same sentence if I try to describe a single genre!

So much fun with the Mapeditor .

Zelda, Shadow of the Colossus = Action Adventure (iirc that was even the official genre of Zelda before nothing was called action adventure anymore...). Day of the Tentacle = Adventure
Shooter and Multiplayer Shooter should be on seperate list becouse you cant compare single to multiplayer! *But most have both so i dont know Also Strategie should be seperatet in "Roundbase - Real Time - Simulation" so 3 categories instead of 2. RPG and Action-RPG should be seperatet as well. (Mostly round base / real time seperation) Adventure should have a point and click only list. (Some games are Action Adventures on that list atm) To have classics, casual and arcade seperated like this is not working as well in my opinion.
"Shooters" could use Wolfenstein 3D (TM)(id Software, 1992) - This is more or less the first true FPS in the world. It is very pixelated, but at the same time pretty awesome. There are so many hidden rooms in this game and so many small details that it is very replayable and its very intuitive for new players.
"Classics"/"Arcade" needs Bomberman/Dynablaster (TM)(Hudson Soft, 1983) - One of the best multi player games from the arcade times. Plant a bomb get away from the blast and pick upgrades from under the rocks. Be aware that big bad monsters can kill you just as well as your own bombs! There are many levels in this game and you can do some funny things like blast the exit with a bomb to spawn more monsters!
"Sports" needs Winter Challenge (TM)(Ballistic, 1991) A classic amongst sports games. You can choose between seven different sports events to participate in each taking a different skill to master. It is easy to play but a lot harder to master. In ski-jumping you can just let go or actually jump from the ramp, in Biathlon you have to control when to use energy and learn to shoot at the right time etc.
"Classics"/"Arcade" seriously needs Bubble Bobble (TM) (Taito, 1986) - One of my favourite games of all times. Pretty unique idea with the bubbles, you can smash or jump on in different circumstances and so much win graphically!
I have made several improvements and updated the OPs list of games, I have changed categories to be more suitable and started to break up the Classics category. I will let OP decide what to do with the list later on:
