Other than that, just knowing what to do for each section when you go to the real exam will save you time. If you don't have to read the directions, you can skip the few minutes in the beginning and get right to practicing. There's no way to memorize all the potential words that could be on the exam so don't try. Trying to learn greek roots and stuff like that are semi helpful, but ur better served just practicing and getting used to the format.

But the ACT is mostly science and Mathematics, i think you could maybe go over wikipedia for chemistry, biology, physics, and geosystems, you could get a good grasp on those subjects. but if you are going to take the SAT, i suggest maybe doing about 10-20 vocab words a week, a good few months in advance and memorize them well enough that you could use them in your daily conversations. Plus, it makes you look smart :D

And if you're going to get a prep book, get those 10 real SATs or whatever. Take as many practice tests as you can.

I highly recommend you read through the first few pages of this thread here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=68210 Basically, tons of REAL practice tests straight from the test company - none from prep companies. Only use prep companies for strategies. Pratice-practice-practice.

Take practice tests over and over again. After each test, go over every single question you weren't 100000% sure on (I'm serious here - you can't just go over the ones you got wrong, you gotta go over the ones you doubted but got right so you know how to get them right) and think about why you got it wrong and why the right answer is right. Do this over and over again. 10 REAL SAT's that book should be helpful. Else use Princeton Review or Kaplan. Barron's is unrealistically difficult.

Just remember midpoint, and distance formulas. Over half the fucking math test is those two things. Those are the only two things that I screwed up on, and I would have gotten over a 30 if I didn't mess my math score up.

the writing i was always good at but i took a few sections every day for two weeks leading up to it, got 790 this was when the test was broken up mass practice really is the best way, and the 10 real sats books (as many as you can get) are the best

I have to say I found the ACT insanely easier than the SAT beacuse they dont' try to trick you. Without studying, my friend pulled a 35 on the ACT when he could only manage about a 2230 on the SAT after mass practicing... which prompted me to try the ACT without studying more than 2 hours. I took it, and I got a 35 Math, 33 in English, 29 Reading, and 28 Science. The last two were significantly lower because I didn't pace myself at all, so I ended up just filling in bubbles for the last 7 or so (Science section is soooo easy... should be an easy 33+ just need to learn to pace yourself)... but if I actually studied just a little bit, I have a feeling I could have easily made a 33-34 score on the ACT, which is much better than my mass studied 2140 on the SAT -- that math section always got me a few times and the writing grammar section on the SAT never made sense to me. I missed 10 grammar questions on the SAT with mass prep... and only like 3 on the ACT without prep. ACT grammar just made a lot more sense -- more straight foward for me.

Edit: Assuming the SAT is still written with the same rules applied to the old test, ballpark all math answers, and use logic to figure out what range the answer is in. All answers to each question are listen in numerical (or alphabetical order for English questions) order. Therefore, you don't have to solve problems, but just figure out what range the answer is in.
