Those prep books and such really are only helpful if you aren't that good at the tests. Realistically, the best way to prepare is to do lots and lots of sample tests. Get teh book of 10 sample SAT's, or something to that effect. Make sure to manage ur time well and do them for real, just one a day or so. OR do it in sections, doesn't matter. Try to be focused when ur doing the exam.

Other than that, just knowing what to do for each section when you go to the real exam will save you time. If you don't have to read the directions, you can skip the few minutes in the beginning and get right to practicing. There's no way to memorize all the potential words that could be on the exam so don't try. Trying to learn greek roots and stuff like that are semi helpful, but ur better served just practicing and getting used to the format.

there was a post on here not too long ago, but basically what it was, was NOT to study from those books 24/7. but study 3-4 months in advance, and study vocabulary, and so on, as now adays, on the SAT is mostly English and literature.

But the ACT is mostly science and Mathematics, i think you could maybe go over wikipedia for chemistry, biology, physics, and geosystems, you could get a good grasp on those subjects.

but if you are going to take the SAT, i suggest maybe doing about 10-20 vocab words a week, a good few months in advance and memorize them well enough that you could use them in your daily conversations. Plus, it makes you look smart :D

My advice: if you pay for and use Sparknotes' practice tests, dont think those are representative of what you're gonna get. They're easier than the real test imo, and I got lower the first time taking it after getting pretty good scores on the bunk ass Sparknotes tests. Additionally, Barrons is good if you are gonna get a book anyways. Their tests are much harder than the actual test and you will go into the test thinking it's really easy.

btw CaucasianAsian, do you post on twoplustwo?

Vocab words are awesome. My parents had to force me to do them, but now I'm really glad they did. Not only did it improve my SAT test score, it just helps in general - in conversation, reading, and english class. But since they took out the analogies, vocab words don't help as much anymore, but I'd still recommend them.

And if you're going to get a prep book, get those 10 real SATs or whatever. Take as many practice tests as you can.

There are definite test taking "techniques" for those exams. Stuff like ballparking, plugging in w/o actually solving, etcetc... I dont remember them b/c it was a good few years ago that i took the SAT's (back when it was out of 1600 no less) but all i can say is, if you can afford it, go enroll in Princeton Review. If you enroll there, and really try to learn what they teach you, I can pretty much guarentee your score will go up by at least 200 points (when it was 1600). (altho it depends on where your'e at now)

Hmmm I actually don't believe in going to take a course will help you very much if you are already a competent student who knows and has the motivation to self study. Sure, you'll need some tips and direction, but you can find that in books or online and don't need to spend a thousand dollars on a course.

I highly recommend you read through the first few pages of this thread here:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=68210

Basically, tons of REAL practice tests straight from the test company - none from prep companies. Only use prep companies for strategies. Pratice-practice-practice.

EDIT: The writing part I think will be Excluded this year on my ACT's.

Memorize some words, know what they mean in context. Basically just read a lot of good smooth writing so you instinctively know what fits. And also for writing part know the grammar.

I didn't really study at all for these things, but I did do a couple of GRE logics tests several years back...

For long-term (at least a year in advance) read a lot and write down and look up all unfamiliar words. Also never stop learning new math. For short-term memorize word lists and take practice tests.

The "Official Guide to the SAT" or w/e and the REAL ACTs book should only cost you $40 total.

Take it from someone who knows what he's talking about - There is only one way to prepare for the SAT's in under 3 years.

Take practice tests over and over again. After each test, go over every single question you weren't 100000% sure on (I'm serious here - you can't just go over the ones you got wrong, you gotta go over the ones you doubted but got right so you know how to get them right) and think about why you got it wrong and why the right answer is right.

Do this over and over again. 10 REAL SAT's that book should be helpful. Else use Princeton Review or Kaplan. Barron's is unrealistically difficult.

You don't need to prep for the ACT. I got a 28 not having done a single school related thing for over four months. Just remember midpoint, and distance formulas. Over half the fucking math test is those two things. Those are the only two things that I screwed up on, and I would have gotten over a 30 if I didn't mess my math score up.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

i took a practice test every day for three weeks for the verbal and math section (yes, like 4 hours a day every day, which really isnt much) and i got 760/790

the writing i was always good at but i took a few sections every day for two weeks leading up to it, got 790

this was when the test was broken up

mass practice really is the best way, and the 10 real sats books (as many as you can get) are the best

Well, I disagree. You can always prep. Always.

But... I have to say I found the ACT insanely easier than the SAT beacuse they dont' try to trick you. Without studying, my friend pulled a 35 on the ACT when he could only manage about a 2230 on the SAT after mass practicing... which prompted me to try the ACT without studying more than 2 hours. I took it, and I got a 35 Math, 33 in English, 29 Reading, and 28 Science. The last two were significantly lower because I didn't pace myself at all, so I ended up just filling in bubbles for the last 7 or so (Science section is soooo easy... should be an easy 33+ just need to learn to pace yourself)... but if I actually studied just a little bit, I have a feeling I could have easily made a 33-34 score on the ACT, which is much better than my mass studied 2140 on the SAT -- that math section always got me a few times and the writing grammar section on the SAT never made sense to me. I missed 10 grammar questions on the SAT with mass prep... and only like 3 on the ACT without prep. ACT grammar just made a lot more sense -- more straight foward for me.

Just get a book on preparing for the SAT. I'm going to get a lot of shit for this, but the SAT only tests your ability to take a test. Smart people can do horrible on it, just because they get test anxiety.

Edit: Assuming the SAT is still written with the same rules applied to the old test, ballpark all math answers, and use logic to figure out what range the answer is in. All answers to each question are listen in numerical (or alphabetical order for English questions) order. Therefore, you don't have to solve problems, but just figure out what range the answer is in.
