When I was standing there on top of the world so humble, you are not thinking about breaking records. I was thinking about coming back alive. You do not want to die in front of your parents and all the people... I thought, "Please, God, don't let me down."

I remember a comment from one of the guys who did it before was something like: Falling there in space with no wind you can't feel anything so for the first minute he was wondering if he was even falling at all. That would the the worst part for me.

That would the the worst part for me. He was the first one. Kittinger, who was record holder for heighest jump before, jumped from 32km. While 39 km doesn't seem that mich more the additional 7 km are critical to achieving supersonic speed and very hard to get to with a balloon. ![]() You can see that pressure begins to rise significantly at about 30 km, so the additional 9 km are exactly the height that alow him to accelerate. v=(2sa)^0.5, without drag Baumgartner would reach mach 1 at about 30-32km height.

Exit altitude: 128,100 ft Freefall time: 4 minutes 20 seconds Freefall distance: 119,846 ft ...you realize that he could not beat the record in duration of freefall. Joe Kittinger's record was 4 min 36 sec. After 4 min 20 sec (=260sec) Baumgartner had 8254 ft left to the ground. Even if you simply cross multiply (which is inaccurate because of differing air density), you see that he would have hit the ground in freefall at 4 min 38 sec (=278sec). Now that would certainly give him the record, but he'd also be dead. 128100ft / x = 119846ft / 260sec x = 260sec * 128100ft / 119846ft x = 278sec

And miles are a more natural measurement. A mile is 1000 paces, see Roman soldiers. A kilometer is less intuitive to measure without instruments.

A kilometer is less intuitive to measure without instruments. Also, using "burgers" as a measurement of weight is much more natural than "kilo". Personally I weight 97 burgers, or 204,7 hot dogs.. Natural doesn't mean intuitive. Also, lets be honest, you need instruments to measure miles and paces too. I'd be impressed if you managed to walk a mile and know exactly when to stop, without any aid at all.

Imagine what it must have looked like for Felix at 128,000ft.

They both have in common that America is the odd one out ![]() But this discussion has been had before, and will be had in the future. Lets not dive deeper into it in this thread ^-^
