With the amount of incredible talent on TL being in the range of mind blowing there is a huge amount of artistic knowledge collectively between us. This thread can ultimately stand as a general art discussion thread for TL that you can feel comfortable going in and talking to experienced artists of all levels about all aspects of art and design. It can be a place you can go to learn or a place you can go to teach but above all its a place you can go to see TL artists doing what they do best.
The concept is simple. Draw a creature, monster, robot, alien or flying electric death ray triangle! whatever it is that you think would be a great addition to our collection of beasts and monsters. Anyone that wants to join can contribute a creature regardless of skill level. There are three different ways.
1. Concept artists. You might not have the greatest chops with photoshop but you can draw a pretty mean squiggle and know all the right places to add spikes and claws to make that blob theoretically haunt our nightmares. Share your vision and let us know what you wanna see. post your concept picture with a name and any other information about your creature that you deem important. You will get to see your creations come to life and get all the awesome perks that come along with being the guy that just came up with the badass idea of a tentacle whale bird with laser talons. any concept you contribute will be posted in the OP with a link to it in the "concepts waiting for rendering queue in op"
2. Graphic artists. So you got the skills to bring those squiggles and shapes to life in all their shiny 3D fireball shooting glory? Pick a concept you like out of the "concepts queue in the OP and post a fully colored finished product to add to our ever growing finished display of monstrosities and beasties that go bump in the night.
3. If you fancy yourself a master monster maker feel free to just jump right in and show off your fully rendered and colored creature concepts and they will be added to the list.
Finished creatures will be displayed in the OP in alphabetical order by artist name with the original concept artists name and original sketch in a spoiler underneath. If you want your name on the rendered creatures list let me know in the thread or send me a PM and I will add a section to the OP for your work. Anyone can feel free to ask for a section. I wont judge you and tell you no but Im keeping faith that people will understand basic graphic design principals if they do wish to have a spot in the op for their finished pieces. I will update this thread on a daily basis to keep everything nice and up to date. I will also work on transferring all the pictures from my creature threads in here so we already got a pretty good start.

Unfortunately I don’t think it turned out as cool as my other one. My brain is too advanced in comparison to my artistic skill when it comes to visuals I am thinking. (Not saying much, I know.) So in the place of artistic skill I shall invoke the power of words!
The idea was a sort of gorilla like body, although with a more upright posture, and more variance in the leg length. It only has the one beefy front leg, and coming out of it’s chest around where the other leg would be if he had one are two spindly t-rex like arms, for manipulating delicate objects. Another note is it's supposed to have gray skin, as opposed to fur.
It’s face, perhaps my biggest failure, (though the t-rex arms were pretty bad, and that’s being generous) was supposed to be in a similar vein as The Silence, from Doctor Who, or that mask you see in Scream. Only with a ton of eyes.
Then it has a dark cloak over its back, the hood is optional, I’m not sure if I like it.
On a somewhat sad note, I am disturbingly proud of my ability to create the 3d effect of putting his other back leg in there.
Anyways, I’m going to take a nap, so the compendium post at the top of page 32 will probably get a little out of date. This thread is beyond awesome, btw. Huge thank you to the artists making squiggles into masterpieces, you guys are great!

Also wondering. There were a few well made ones that weren't drawn yet (not mine of course, as a 2 year old can draw better than me/be more imaginative).
I wouldn't worry too much about taking up space though. Maybe if you separated the "monsters from squiggles" from people's proper original artwork it would help.
Behold my pityful online photoshop skillz here ist the link to where i uploaded it, in case you get a bad resolution: LINK What i was trying to draw was a moster hiding as a giant rock/mountain, with a little pink decoy thingy. And you shouldn't really see that the rock is actually the real monster at first glance. You need a lot of intelligence to defeat this monster (to see through the decoy trap)
Would be splendid if you could do this one too. You guys are like gods to me ^^
a million hours in paint later... it still looks like ass lol. But I'm envisioning a bad ass grim reaper looking dude with blue flames for eyes and hands, a tattered up black and gold robe, golden teeth (with some jewels perhaps) and a bad-ass scythe with a human skull as a topper.
This thread has definitely taken a turn for the awesome, though I hope liquibot gets some love.
Also I think that Inkblood's post might be helpful:
On August 10 2012 15:57 Inkblood wrote: I went to the liberty of making a bestiary, compendium, index, whatever you want to call it. I thought it would be nice to have everything in one place, and numbers we can look at to see where things stand. Hopefully you all find this at least slightly useful.
Basically we have the number, representing the order in which the original concept was posted.
We have the name of the creature which I added in order to make the references easier to parse. + Show Spoiler +
Some of the names are from the original concept post. Such as Slimy, Basalt Giant, and the aptly named, “Weird Thing.” (I know that’s not what it’s name was supposed to be. But I found the description accurate and filled with brevity.)
One is from the artist. (Free Hug)
And the rest are from my imagination. Some better than others. My favorite names I came up with are The Cookbot, Grim Rapper (the teeth, you see), The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Drugs. And my personal favorite, Slender Bear. The instant I saw that suit I knew what he had to be called, and it amuses me to no end.
Some of my names kind of suck though, so I’m open to suggestions.
Next is the name of the original “concept artist”. Clicking on the name will take you to the post in which you can see the concept picture for yourself.
Last, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY we have the Badass Artists themselves. Clicking on their names will take you to the BEAUTIFUL final picture of the creature.
BAMF renamed IcyHot by request of Mordanis. Random period after one of the numbers removed. Removed s from Free Hugs, noticed it was only Free Hug in the picture. Stick Gunman renamed Steve by request of Firebolt145, the original artist. Added Chicken Scratch, wasn't sure if that was supposed to be it's name. But that's what it is for now. Added finished Slender Bear artwork. Adjusted completed monsters to reflect change in number. Added Psyzilla. IcyHot renamed Genius Loci by request of strongandbig, the original artist. Italicized it because he did in his post. And why not, it looks cool. Added Levitating Face, Stomp Bot, Laser Elephant and The Red Ogre, the last I wasn't sure what to call, so I'm settling for this atm. Added finished Chicken Scratch artwork. Added finished Laser Elephant artwork. Added a bunch new concept artwork. Added finished Weird Thing artwork. Removed some text from the main body of the post to make more room, and make it easier to update. Complted monster numbers still there. Added a bunch new concept artwork, went to the liberty of giving Manlifesto7 a title. Added finished Stomp Bot artwork. Added Murderer of Steve Irwin concept artwork. I deny the all accusations that the name is insensitive. Added finished Basalt Giant artwork.
I want this thread to live! So i'mma just put in my two cents in response to Coag. Negative space is indeed very important, but I also like to put a lot of emphasis on formwork. Proper value requires proper knowledge of perspective and basic formwork. Formwork being able to produce boxes, cylinders and spheres in basically any set up. The better someone can morph, combine, stretch and alter these objects according to their will, the better they will be able to understand and reproduce more complex structures.
I will start from the top left corner then, the multilegged creature with a gun:
Rhynian Scavenger
An indiginous animal to the planet of Rhyne, long used by mankind as one of the dumping ground planets of the Milky Way, it has been mutated by toxic waste from its originally, 2 foot high octopus form to become 10 feet tall and sport a permanent grimace. It shows signs of rudimentary intelligence, being capable of picking up discarded human weapons to use against their main predators on the planet, the Rhynian Tiger.
Certain naturalists say that the creature's mating rituals are very interesting, with the male having to locate a discarded human gun and present it ritually to the female, which may blow him away with it if she is not fond of his grimace. If she is fond, she keeps it, they lock tails and mating begins.

Oh, shit. We're doing stories? Writing is something I don't suck so much at. (In my humble yet biased opinion.) Here's a little "backstory" for this bugger I drew the concept for. The recently named; Hound of Lu-Shing. The story is a bit long, but it'll pass.
“The Hound of Lu-Shing? Aye, I saw the thing. Might as well been the Devil walking abroad I say. Bigger than it ox it was, and meaner than the meanest thing you’ve ever seen. You heard tales of what it looks like? They’re all true I reckon. Those eyes could cut through a mountain they’ve got so much malice. I saw it doing its dirty work too, whole damn village in western Connecticut torn to shreds.”
The man spat and resumed. “Musket balls didn’t do shit, nor any other weapon turned against it, I’d wager. Maybe a cannon could. But I’d like to see them hit a target moving as fast as that Hound did. The thing crossed a whole field in a damn second. And cut through the militia faster than a sickle can slice through that as many blades of grass. Poor bastards got a volley off, but like I said, musket balls aren’t worth a damn.”
I asked the fellow if he knew why the villainous creature had struck.
“Might be the Indian’s had something to do with it. Maybe not though, doubt they’d strike this close to the coast. Might be Parliament had something to do with it. Don’t tell them I said that, though. Who knows for sure? All I can say is the Devil walked abroad that day, punishing the sinners and righteous alike. Luck was the only thing that saved me. Men more pious than I died that day.”
“The Hound was named by the Asians, what do you think of that connection?” I asked him.
“I reckon they saw it first. The Devil doesn’t care for the color of a mans skin, so long as that skin’s colder than it was before the Devil showed up. The Devil can use men to strike, and an Asian was doubtless tempted by evil, and the Hound of Lu-Shing struck there because of it. But that was nothing more than chance. And I’m sure the Hound has struck before, and has gone by other names.”
“Do you believe it was actually the Devil?”
“God, and the Devil alone can say for certain. But it’s either the Devil or some minion cooked up in the deepest depths of hell. And I’ll be damned if it’s different.”
“What if it’s something else? Something unknown even to the Devil?”
The man grimaced and glanced up at the moonlit sky. “Then we’re fucked.”
Later I discovered the fellow had been found severely mutilated not far from the spot I had interview him, at the edge of town. No one ever found out what truly happened. Though I must confess some suspicion did land on me, and I was forced to flee for my own safety. I sleep uneasy now, especially when traveling alone. I awake from horrible nightmares. And imagine what fate the man suffered.

On the volcanic planet of Char, settlers cannot build cities in one single place as every several years volcanic eruptions will occur randomly, forcing them to move. To counteract this tendency they have created gigantic turtles via genetic engineering and built their cities on them.
However when a volcanic eruption is imminent these turtles are often sleeping, causing the poor settlers to have to dance en masse on their backs to wake them up in time to escape. This dance was later copied by Blizzard and used widely in their games.

that's fine but what I intended to say was I will write the story for my guys
" That's my boy, he's a very nice kid. Don't listen to what they say on the media because my boy isn't a psychopath, you know, he just has so much love to give !
But nature tends to be bitchy, he doesn't really know what he does, you see, me and her mother are shaped like donuts, so he's used to have contact with people, we can't remove that from him. He's looking for friends, he just wants to feel connected with people.
For his 8th birthday, I organized a little party with the kids from the nighborhood. You should have seen my son, he was so happy ! Dozen of friendly children ready to have fun and form some bounds with my son. There's nothing wrong with my boy, it's just that other kids are so squishy. You should have seen the surprised look in his eyes when he hugged his first friend. I was horrified at first, I though it would traumatize my boy but his moral seems unbreakable. With his little voice he explained me how good it felt to really make contact with people and how warm and comforting was the red liquid dippind out of his face. I'm like every other father, I just want him to be happy... When the police came, we had to run, the house was getting kinda messy, specially after my son invited the local boy scouts.
We had to move to another country, I was scared that it would suck the moral out of my son, changing environment as a kid can be very destabilizing. But no, my boy carry an infinite amount of love and optimism. When he said to me 'it's ok dad, it's just a good occasion to make new friends" I litterally cried. My kid is blessed by god himself, neither the hatred or fear from the neighborhood could stop his quest for love and friendship.
So please, people, don't hate my son, just be nice with him, give him a hug... You don't have much choice anyway, I told my son that if someone runs away, it's just because he wants to play hide and seek, and unluckily for you my son is fast, very fast... You can't escape from love "

veQ well we are looking for fully colored rendered pieces for the final creature picture but your more than welcome to contribute sketches (very nice zerg btw) and we will add them to a section with your name. SymphonyP Very good I will add to the waiting to be finished list.
layabout you should get photoshop or something because using mspaint doesnt justify your skills. Your good enough to throw out final creatures for us for sure just need to get those magic finishing touches on it.

Eyeball Magnus Rover Fighter is an alien that crash landed on Mars in the year 4013, where he sustained significant injuries, including the loss of all his limbs. Remarkably, he managed to survive the harsh climate by building new appendages and an anti-gravity pad with found scraps of Mars Rovers, left behind on the planet over the previous centuries by humankind.
Currently, E-Magnus spends most of his time leading a counter-insurgency against the Rovian Empire, an ancient civilization of sentient Robots that evolved from the Earth's rovers and control 70% of the Red Planet.
Genius loci is Latin for "the spirit of a place." Present only in those rare places which, unchanging, seem to perfectly embody a single moment, these spirits usually manifest as no more than a subtle emotional influence on the visitor. They grow stronger over the decades and centuries as their domain accrues temporal permanence, and narrative and emotional weight in the minds of men.
The genius loci is the concrete embodiment of a place's character, and grows proportionally weaker as that character is changed or destroyed by human or environmental intervention. Therefore, they usually manifest as stabilizing, calming influences, or preserving forces; a forest avatar with trees for arms and moss for skin, perhaps, or a stony man with a craggy face of granite.
However, when a place is defined for long enough by violent disruption, a very rare sort of genius loci can come into being. When the history of a place is the history of the same cataclysm, repeating itself across time, the genius loci becomes the force which "preserves" of that very disruption. Thus great racing coyotes of pure flame have been glimpsed far off across dry prairies before the perennial wildfire, and in the drowning towns of monsoon-wracked islands villagers have seen serpentine forms of cloud and water, smelling the air with tongues of lightning.
Far from civilized lands, at the center of a nameless atoll there is a single mountain, rising steep out of the water. It is in the spawning grounds of the hurricanes, where the hot, humid air of the tropics meets the cold, dry trade winds; but the thickest clouds come not from the hurricanes, but flowing out of the mountain called Volcano. For the native fisherman of the atoll - the other islands, for it would be folly to live on the slopes of Volcano - for those fishermen, life is a constant struggle. Caught between fire and storm, generation after generation has struggled to rebuild wrecked boats and ruined houses. Blown apart by the storm, smouldered at the whim of Volcano, their hard struggle with the elements keeps them at the very edge of death - but it is in this struggle that they find life and the meaning of their existence.
These fishermen have always been aware of a presence on the shores of Volcano. Shrouded in hurricane rains or masked in windswept clouds of ash, reports of the shape conflict but the two glowing eyes are always the same. The fishers have come to accept that this presence, and the dual forces of hurricane and Volcano with which they have come to associate it, are neither demons to be feared, nor gods to be worshipped. The hurricane swamps their boats, but rain brings fresh water and windblown currents sweep schools of fish into their nets. Volcano's fire burns their huts, but its rich ash ensures the islands' fertility, and the wood it grows enables the fishermen to build their huts anew. And they are just as deaf to the villagers' prayers as to their screams.
The fisherrmen know that these dual cataclysms, and the spirit born of them, are neither gods nor demons. They are simply the spirit of the islands; simply a force of nature.
I'm somewhat decent with 3d in maya and I do know a bit of photoshop but I haven't really done anything like this. Some of the art here is really cool.
Tortured Demon This is the concept art for a demon i came up with a couple of weeks ago. I was really inspired by silent hill and Pyramid Head. It will run after its prey and impale it, all while letting out a muffled scream.
I'm currently working on one of the unfinished concepts in the OP which i will probably upload tomorrow.

Ah ... some TLC went into this. Looking forward to see what you have in store tomorrow.
Could we get the OP reorganised slightly to separate the squiggle creature renders from the more general creature stuff? It's hard to follow the squigglevolution (...I guess that's now a word) at the moment.
Got another monster for anyone interested. One of my better works (better than the 2 minute faceman monster I made in paint haha).
Hey all,
This is probably going to be my last one. To be honest there doesn't seem to be much interest in this thread, and the OP hasn't been updated in a while.
I plan on taking my time with it, so I thought it would be helpful to show you guys it's development in phases.
Haha looks great so far. Wish there was more interest in this thread as it was really fun drawing those doodles and then seeing actual work being created out of them. I suppose that'll be my last doodle too then unless the thread becomes more active.
updating op now. This thread will stand the tests of time as long as I bounce in here to draw monsters now and then I think. And I do it alot as you might have noticed so no worries. TL just needed a general art thread and this is more or less I think is a great place for it.

Hey all,

I think that there were a few things which really animated this thread back when it was still part of the blue robot thread - there was the amazement and wonder at the ability of TL artists to turn squiggles into gold, but there was also the idea of creating monsters to fight the robot and liquid'blue in some sort of dungeon-crawl or collective-text-rpg game thing. We need to keep working on that and I bet people will be re-animated to work on art stuff.
Also drawing this stuff takes a lot of time for the real artists so I bet it's going to be a lot more active on the weekends.
Also also we need more stories in here! I'll start working on the Cerberus Bug's monster manual entry after lunch.
PRO-TIP: If you're not sure what you're doing, try adding some veins and muscles. And if that doesn't look right, try adding another layer of veins and muscles on top of those muscles. Rinse, repeat.
Feel kinda bad making nit-picks, but the axe handle's perspective is off. The arm is receding but the haft is pretty much straight despite being on top, which makes it look strange.

Yeah, I'm debating that. I had it tapering more before, but it felt 'chunky'.
To be frank, there's all kinds of problems with the anatomy once you get past the idea that it's a rat with three arms.

I want to contribute but i first need answers: How would somebody without any spare cash go about learning to use photoshop?
Which version should said person download?
You could literally search photoshop tutorials in google and spend eternity doing them all there're so many! One website I used to use extensively was http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/adobe_photoshop/ . As to what version; I can't tell the difference between any from 7 to CS5 but maybe I'm not using the new features..
alot of the features added in the newer CS versions of Photoshop are industry type things that are useless for digital painters. they are more for streamlining projects that span multiple programs.as for learning how to use photoshop. just downloading it and experimenting around while readin tutorials is what I did. Anyway so since this is bumped heres what im working on right now.
I really feel like alot of the stuff people made in here, has been forgotting abit, and that is wrong. If people show no interest in it, I'll let it rest, but it definitely deserves a second chance.
This thread blossomed out from the "Blue robot" thread, as it was meant to give everyone else a chance to post their artwork aswell, not only Coagulations Blue robot (which was awesome too, ofcouse!)
All art skills in all shapes and forms are welcome, talent isn't required !
