Hopes of highly water-resistant Pixel phones have, according to a reliable source we've trusted in the past, been dashed. Google's new handsets will be advertised as having IP53 dust and water resistance, which essentially amounts to almost no enhanced water resistance at all. For reference, the HTC 10 also has this rating, and is not marketed as being water-resistant.

The "3" in IP53 means a device will not experience damaging water ingress when upright at an angle not to exceed 60 degrees from vertical while being sprayed by relatively low-pressure (somewhere between 7-20PSI or 50 to 150kPa) water. This probably means very little to you phrased this way, but IPX3 is essentially saying the device will not experience water ingress (i.e., water won't get inside) when held at a relatively upward angle in your hand during use in very heavy rain or when lightly splashed. If the device is left flat on a surface, IPX3 does not guarantee it will be protected from water ingress by heavy rain or mist. To put it even more simply: IPX3 means your phone won't break just because you sent a text in a downpour. This is what an IPX3 test looks like. Of note: not all IPX3 tests work this way, some use a "shielded" hose like this, which seems considerably less aggressive than the video below. Which really goes to show not all IP tests are created equal.

Deducing release dates scribbled on paper, googling when Summer ends down to the minute, watching Play Store listings looking for any movement… If you have been around the forums or Reddit you probably took part in one of those activities or saw someone who did.

Expectations were high, Google finally seemed to have a pulse on what may work for a chat client. Strong SMS support? Google has some really strong acquisitions in RCS, the next evolution of SMS. Easy syncing between devices and device types? Google is a leader in making your content easily available on almost any platform you happen to be on. Google has made such strong strides in terms of their software and targeting the general consumer market, it was not a far stretch to hope that some of this would have extended into this totally new chat client. Instead Allo, as it ships today, is a mere echo of what so many of us hoped it would be and more than that, what it needed to be…

The world is full of chat clients, many of which are hundreds of millions of users deep. The barrier of entry is high, so a client that wants to succeed cannot do so off a single parlor trick, and unfortunately that’s exactly what Allo did. So first let’s get the good out of the way. Allo is available today on iOS and Android. Allo is also the first look at Google Assistant, which is both promising and a little redundant.

……….

Oh, were you expecting another especially good point? So were many others. But unfortunately the Google Assistant is the ONLY solid, exclusive element of Allo as it stands today, and so many negative elements all but totally cloud out that benefit. So let’s start with the beginning.

Unlike many other chat clients Allo is only available for iOS and Android. There is no web client and there are no tablet applications either. This puts Allo into a particularly tricky situation. Allo has all of the drawbacks of a single device SMS client AND the drawbacks of an IM client that does not handle SMS.

Google even went a few steps further by including an almost totally useless SMS feature that allows you to send SMS from it, however, it isn’t an SMS client… Confused? Your recipients will be too since it sends from a random unknown 5-digit number.

Yeah I can understand that it'd be convenient... but I use my phone in the rain all the time and I've never had an issue except for it ignoring my touches until I wipe it. I really don't understand the obsession unless people really want to take pictures at the pool?

Is the iPhone even IP67? Insofar as I know, Motorola and Sony Ericsson (yes, that long ago) were the first to make IP67 phones. They were a bit of a niche market until Samsung decided to make the S5 IP67. I think its main use for most people is that you can accidentally drop it in the toilet, swimming pool or canal without your phone breaking. Other than that, it's useful for outdoor use (I had an S5 and was quite happy it was IP67 when I got caught out in the forest in the middle of a tropical downpoor. I reckon any other phone would have survived, but only if I switched it off, and I needed it to function as my GPS. The next, and most important step in rainproofing phones is to invent a touch screen that works when wet

Consumers who received Samsung Galaxy Note 7 replacements are reporting that their new devices have overheating and battery drain issues even while they're charging.

The users who found the issues are based in South Korea, where the smartphone maker started the recall process back in Monday.

Two independent and reliable sources have confirmed to us that Google is planning a new Pixel laptop to be released in Q3 2017. The project, known internally as 'Bison' and by the informal nickname 'Pixel 3,' will likely be the first brand-new device to showcase Google's combined Android / Chrome OS 'Andromeda' operating system in a laptop form factor. Bison, then, would be the culmination of years of work by Google's Pixel team and Google's Android and Chrome OS teams.

We are extremely confident Google plans for the device to run Andromeda. We are also confident that Andromeda is a completely distinct effort from Google's current campaign to bring Android apps to Chromebooks, and that Bison would not be marketed as a Chromebook. Android apps on Chrome OS descended from the ARC project, while Andromeda is a much larger, more ambitious initiative that is being pursued via merging Chrome features into Android, not vice versa. As such, it would be more accurate to say Bison will run Android than Chrome OS, and could finally be Google's internal commitment to releasing Andromeda. (This lines up with the narrative The Wall Street Journal presented in its exclusive about the merge effort last year, in which laptops were specifically singled out as the merged OS's first big target.)

Google is holding a wide-ranging hardware launch event on October 4, where it’s expected to debut a pair of Pixel-branded phones, a VR headset, a Wi-Fi router, the Amazon Echo-like Google Home, and the device pictured here, a 4K-capable digital media player. A person familiar with the company’s plans confirmed an Android Police report that the device will be marketed as the Chromecast Ultra.

Tipped to run firmware version 1.21 at retail, the Ultra will allegedly be sold alongside the existing high definition Chromecast dongle, released last year. Whereas that product retails for $35, Ultra will cost nearly double at $69, according to another Android Police report. The increased price brings more powerful hardware capable of streaming content with 4K resolution from a device like a smartphone to an HDMI-equipped display.

Notably, the 1.21 firmware, which was just released in beta form to members of the Chromecast Preview program, has eliminated all instances of the Chromecast logo. In its place is the Google “G” logo — the same one seen adorning the Chromecast Ultra hardware.

Following Samsung’s recall of the Galaxy Note 7, the Korean company assured owners replacement units wouldn’t come equipped with exploding batteries. While it remains to be seen whether the issue is completely in the rearview, a Wall Street Journal report claims Samsung is looking into reports of new Note 7 units overheating—to the point where they’re unusable.

According to the report, users in the U.S. and South Korea have apparently complained about new Note 7s becoming so hot during use that contact with skin became an issue. Samsung allegedly promised to replace one person’s device after they reported it to the company. Keep in mind, the device was already a replacement.

Samsung issued a statement to the WSJ saying “all smartphones may experience temperature fluctuations,” which is certainly true. But considering how badly the Note 7 launch has been, you can’t blame owners for being alarmed. The Korean company told the WSJ that the recent issue does not pose a safety concern.

Earlier this month, Samsung announced an unprecedented smartphone recall when it discovered millions of early Note 7 units contained faulty batteries. The company said the new units being shipped to the U.S. and other countries would not contain any battery issues—there’s even a software update for new units that turns the battery indicator green; a symbol of safety, according to Samsung.

It’s not unusual for phones to get so hot they shut down. Under the circumstances, however, it’s not a good look for Samsung right now, especially when new Note 7s are reportedly exploding overseas.

Enjoyed the digs at Apple. Other than that: meh.

Just pray the battery is better than my 6P's. It is really irritating to forget my charger at home, and run out of battery on my way home from work.

The price alone makes it asinine also there is/was no live Demo. Makes the HTC 10 look good in comparison. Also it's exclusive to Verizon....
