Is it still worth it to get the first gen moto g?

Where I am (Australia) there is only one retailer that sells the 2nd gen and it's about $70 dearer.

I think so if you don't mind the crappy camera or 4.5 inch display, you do end up getting longer battery life and they are cheaper at some places.

What about updates? Will it get the Android L update?

I don't really care for the camera or the screensize to be honest.

In theory, yes you should
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_customer_support_claims_moto_x_and_g_will_get_android_l-news-8960.php

But, who knows, like they say in the article customer support is not always the most reliebe thing when it comes to this kind of things. And plans changes all the times. But if i were to bet, i think theres an 80% of chances that you'll get it.

I really can't imagine anything else that my Nexus 4 could do ... by far the best smart phone I have ever had. Very few problems and does everything I need.

I'm getting a new phone soon, any recommendations guys?

I have a Galaxy Nexus right now (precursor to Nexus 4), and I was simply going to get a Nexus 5. My lady had a Nexus 7, and the screen and software is great, so I'm sure I would like the Nexus 5, with battery life being the biggest concern I suppose. I'm looking for a phone costing <500CAD or less (doesn't mean it has to be at that exact point, I'd be very happy to pay $400).

I don't feel like there is any need nowadays to get the top end phones, unlike 3-5 years ago, spec wise even on the lower end of the spectrum the phones perform what they need to do. Back in the day you really did need a quick phone to be able to use the internet effectively, play games, etc.

So in that <$500, I would like a 4.7-5.5' screen, resolution of 300ppi+, above average battery life, 8MP+. I don't really need any gimmicky things like a heart rate sensor, or finger print scanner... Just a powerful and durable phone that will allow me to use productivity software, effectively use the internet, and have decent multitasking between apps.

Get nex 5 or wait for 6. Although theres nothing known about 6 except rumors and assumptions. Or even moto g is fine enough for daily task. If you really dont care about spec last years high ends are still perfectly fine and are more likely to be on clearance price. Or even any buget phones released this yr honestly runs like butter these days.

If you're not looking for something really high end (in particular, 3D gaming), I'd recommend the Asus Zenfone 5. I got one recently and it's been absolutely great (and fairly inexpensive too). They should be going for around $150 (16GB internal 2G RAM) without contract, at least if prices are similar across the globe.

I simply have trouble comparing high end phones from two years ago, to today's mid level phones.

For example, I can buy a Samsung S3 for $399, and with a $40month unlimited talk/text/data plan I would pay $150 for the phone in total, while not in a contract. But I don't know how good an S3 really is (especially software wise), to a $400 mid level smart phone today.

Looking at the phones you guys linked (Zenfone and Moto G), they look nice, but in the $200-$250 price range with the potential carriers I'd go with, I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more if the extra features are warranted. So it seems like my upper level of specs is the Nexus 5... And lower end is probably something like a Moto G. Is there anything with a bit more boom to look into, or any good last years models to look for? I mean if you guys think it's enough, then I have no complaints about paying less, I don't use my phone as a fashion accessory.

Thanks for the help so far!

I don't see any reason to pay for a flagship android to be honest.

If you don't care for gaming, the mid range androids are fantastic, with nexus 5 that stands out.

Personally I will be getting a moto g, at $200 mark it's hard to beat, good phone to use it for 2 years.

Again, it really depends on what you're looking for. I just want to be able to use common apps quickly (Facebook, Youtube, Kindle, some transportation apps, LINE) without lag, with a reasonably sized screen, SD card compatability, and good battery life. I don't care about 3d gaming or resolution and graphics at all because I'd rather do that on my Nexus 7 or on my PC, so the Zenfone works for me personally. It's all about your needs, but I just feel that this will last me awhile. I think the fact that it was so (relatively speaking) cheap does bias me towards it.

In fairness though, I've never actually used a high level flagship phone, so maybe there is indeed something about them that warrants another $100-200 dollars.

If you really don't care about having the newest phone, then get the Nexus 5. It is so powerful that it can basically do anything.

Or if you want to save $50, you can wait until the next Google Nexus phone comes out. By that time, the Nexus 5 will probably receive a $50 price drop. There is no guaranteed that there will be a price drop though.

You cannot go wrong with a Google phone. Not only do you have powerful specs, but you will also be the first to get the newest Android updates.

I am rocking the HTC one (m7) and I love it, have had it for a year and it is great. I am not sure what it will cost you but it is worth it! It has all the "best" specs 2gb ram, dual core processor, 16gb/32gb memory and best of all it just feels great in your hand and you can tell it's a well made phone. Also great ROM support if your into rooting your phone

Problem with extra features to recommend is, everyone has different opinion on whats "worth it". Theyre all nice extras but some swear by it while others arent amused. So its ultimately up to you to decide whats a bargain.

Also are you getting a phone out of contract or with? Nexus 5 and moto g is good on its own but its real value comes from being out of contract. If ur gonna sign your wallet away to some carrier you might as well as get some nicer phone for subsidies. Last time i checked nexus 5 with t mobile (my carrier) it didnt subsidize that well (kind of a rip off if u ask me).

Thanks for your input guys.

I'm with Wind Mobile, so essentially I buy the phone, for full price, and then pay $30/month for unlimited talk/text/data. And if I choose to stay with them for 2 years, they will give me back $150 dollars... So no contract, but a bit of an incentive to stay with them. I'll definitely look into the Moto G, and if I find a cheap Nexus 5, I'll do that instead! Thank you.

damn them non us carrier competitiveness. googled them and they offer unlimited US roaming for 15 canadian bucks. If I were to just roam with them forever since i live here in US, that would be cheaper than using domestic carrier by a mile. and it would still be tmobile coverage since thats what theyre partnered with lol. :p

Our plans are expensive, or not that much different from what you'd have in the US usually. $80/month for a 2 year plan with unlimited minutes +2GB of data from the big three here (Telus, Rogers, and Bell). Also internet costs here are absurd, $60 for 25Mb/s, $80 for 50Mb/s, and $90 for 100Mb/s, with a choice of two different providers.

Would be funny if you could get the roaming thing to work though. Exchange rate is really favorable for you guys right now as well.
