Wow, that's 45 mins of my life I'm never getting back. I lol'd hard at the part where they pumped gas into his room and that's why I kept reading, but the thread went downhill from there.

Geez, it was only 6, not 16, years ago... PC's weren't that expensive lol, and he was staying with some girl.

just spent, like the last hour reading the full thread, great story but i thought he would of gave a little bit more back to the community that helped him out when he was on the bones of his arse and in a foreign country. He eventually got home then you never hear from him again until 3 years later, if that was me in his position and a community as awesome as this helped me out when i was in dire straits, i would owe my life to teamliquid.

Am sure he is good guy and maybe just felt a little embarrassed by the whole situation or whatever, but he has debt to this community now and he should of shown a little more love imo.

Just out of curiosity (haven't read the entire thread) it seems like he had a ticket for a return flight on February 1st the entire time and the only problem was that he didn't have the money to survive until then. But if he had just told the embassy that he didn't have a place to stay, they would have sent him to a shelter until his flight date, which means that he wouldn't have needed work or donations to sustain himself anyway. So what exactly was this entire thread about and why didn't he just do that? I don't get the reasoning behind most of the decisions made here...

Why would you want to lie to your own embassy?

To get the help that they should be giving you anyway so you don't have to feel bad mooching off friends and random people on the internet. What kind of question is this? As for the person who said that he needed money and not a place to stay, what did he need money for? Wasn't it pretty much for food? Getting the embassy to assist you in getting into a shelter would have eliminated the need for this. Sure, it would have been a lot less interesting as a story, but it would have also made a whole lot more sense than looking for random jobs online and burdening people with your situation (basically the girl he was staying with and whoever else was supporting him while he was meeting people for free meals and drinks).

I'm not sure why you would see this story as inspirational at all. Maybe it was inspirational while he was backpacking across the world, but I don't see anything inspirational about his decisions from the moment he was robbed. If anything, they were irresponsible and short-sighted.

He needed money not just for food, but to change his flight because the ticket was for a plane in the UK at Feb 1st and he couldn't afford to stay at that girls house until then. Changing your flight location and time isn't necessarily cheap either. I would rather him be sincere than be a dishonest person.

Assuming that the embassy would have helped him into a shelter, there would be no need to change the flight since staying at a shelter would mean he wouldn't have been burdening the girl he was staying with. Just because someone is willing to take you in doesn't necessarily mean that you should take the offer, especially when there are alternatives. They may not complain about it because they feel sympathy for you, but still you should take into consideration that you're burdening them with your problems as well and try to find a better way to deal with it.

If he told the embassy that he didn't have a place to stay, it wouldn't have necessarily been dishonest since he only had a place to stay due to someone's good graces. It's not like he had a hotel he was paying for or an apartment he was renting. He was essentially homeless.

The girl i stayed with i met in Australia. She was very supportive and helped me out alot.We still keep in touch and are very close. I dont feel i made any poor or short sighted decisions.

For everyone who added me on Facebook. If you go to my photo albums and look under random you will see the lovely girl i stayed with " Sylvia" and other pictures from around Europe that i had a on disposable camera.

I never went inactive. I got right back in to BW after few a few months back. I hung out on the site quite a bit. i still kept in contact with old bw friends. Im really proud to see my old friend " Lzgamer" still very active and doing well!!

I will never forget what the Tl.net community and its operators did for me.. Now that I look back i can say that it was a Great Adventure and an awesome learning experiance!
thanks to all who helped me get home and a big thanks to TL.net

Those were the good old days!! Wgtour/Pgtour really improved the foreign bw scene.

I played sc2 single player. Played a few games on bnet but never got into it. I got over whelmed with school and work.

I guess there is still hope for mankind, It's always nice to read something like this once in a while.
These are the things we should be reading about in the newspapers instead of what Paris Hilton's shit smelled like and the new haircut of Justin Beiber.

I'm glad everything turned out well, I was recently in the same position (well almost) I got stuck on Fuerteventura for a couple of weeks. Lucky for me my parents could help me:p
