When someone quotes Ayn Rand, its time to stop replying.
On the subject of the fake police siren thing, I think it speaks much more than people realize. That's very different from getting drunk and getting in trouble. That's being total sober and deciding it would be funny to terrorize people and scare them all the while committing a felony which was made possible by your hugely rich family. It speaks to his lack of understanding how most people operate. It totally reinforces the idea of "Too rich to understand what being human really is". Obama has my trust when it comes to at least understanding what different types of families live with. I honestly don't think Romney is capable of it.

It's beyond trolling. There's are very goods reason why impersonating a police officer is illegal. Like serial killers. And pedophiles.

Ignoring a law designed to protect people's safety because you're too rich to care is irrelevant?
Tell me, if some random guy in your neighborhood was pretending to be police officer, and say, harassing your children, would you be cool with that?
I'd love to hear Mitt Romney defend impersonating a police officer. Anyone else would immediately go to jail. This is literally the kind of thing only a wealthy, privileged white man could get away with. All it does is reinforce how disconnected he is from the rest of the planet.

It's relevant because impersonating a police officer is a much more serious offense than stealing road signs and traffic cones (and those orange barrels too!)
But honestly it does seem like the sort of thing a college kid would do for fun. I don't put much seriousness in the whole thing. Maybe if I was more right-wing I would.

I doubt he got caught by real police. Assuming this story isn't complete BS, I would make a firm guess the police never caught him doing it. Are we just assuming his behavior is motivated by being rich and he was caught and they just let him go because his name is Romney and he has white skin? Black or poor people have never broken laws to prank anyone? Children drive cars now so they'd have been pulled over?
Lol, I can tell this conversation is going to go far. You win. Breaking any laws for laughs is exactly equal to breaking laws to rape and murder people from both a legal and moral POV. These stories about Romney are all 100% true, and we can safely assume he is a terrible rich white person who only understand other evil rich privileged white people.

Wow, I didn't make any of those arguments.
I didn't equate what Romney did to being a serial killer. I simply pointed out that impersonating a police officer is a serious offense, precisely because if it were legal, it would be abused by all kinds of criminals.
So things aren't illegal unless you get caught? And if you don't get caught it's fine?
This is why this prank is so distasteful. Because it encourages irresponsible behaviour by people like you.

So he went out in a police costume since the Batman thingy is more a billionaire thing and he is not THAT rich - big deal?

To be clear, it's not a huge deal, but it's just like that account of Romney pinning down a kid in highschool and cutting his hair off because he thought he was 'queer'.
It's one of those things that just makes you think, "Wow ... Romney was an ASSHOLE." And not in the way that all teenagers are assholes, but like a big-time, full-on douche.

You didn't make any of those arguments or imply any of it. You didn't continually link more serious breaking of the same law with breaking it for a prank. You never implied you believed the stories based on testimonials or all that matters is his wealth and class in this situation. Completely unfair of me to characterize your position as he got away with it because he is rich and white.
Ok, maybe I exaggerated when I said he only understands other rich white people when you said he is only disconnected from the rest of the planet.

Impersonating a police officer is a felony in Michigan, and if it is true he was harassing people with a real police uniform and pulling over people, etc, then it shows a real lack of character.
Also, unless they gave him the uniform then you would have to assume he stole it, and I assume stealing property from the police/state is also a crime.

Wow... This thread is getting derailed pretty hard. Guessing that it's being left for the moment as banbait...
I could spend a very long time discussing the merits of each candidate, but for now all I'll say is this:
Mitt Romney: The more "moderate" candidate of the two. Willing to bend on pretty much any issue if it will help him with his voter base (sadly, pretty much every politician does this to some degree...). My biggest issue with him, though, is he doesn't really stand behind anything yet. He can spend all day criticizing Obama's handling of the economy, but until he presents his own plan he's pretty worthless.
Barrack Obama: His entire term, he has been an incredibly left-wing president. I am all for the helping of the less fortunate, and the establishment of a better health care system. However, finding ways to keep the budget down and the deficit low should be more of a priority imo. The U.S. can't possibly hope to remain a superpower when it is bleeding so much money in debt. Of course, this could be investigated much more in depth, but let's just sum things up:
TL;DR:
Obama should focus more on fiscal accountability, and Romney should focus more on personal accountability.
My two cents.
|
Edit: Fuck it. I'm in a mafia game and can't afford fucking up.
|
Obama isn't really left wing. His policies have been heavily corporatist and capitalist. I WISH he was more left wing. But the fact is that he's much more of a centrist and always has been. I mean geez, Obamacare is blatantly corporatist, not socialist. The right wing has some pretty consistent propaganda though (like calling Obamacare socialized medicine), so I'm not surprised he gets that rap.
Mitt Romney does stand for something. He stands for a flexible politician that will do whatever he's told to do by his party and by the corporations. Even more corrupt and sleazy than your average politician, which is impressive.

Every recent president has admitted to smoking pot, which is illegal.
There is "illegal" and illegal. Yes, something like that probably borders on the edge, but it's no reason to make someone pay for it 25 years later. We all do stupid stuff when we're teenagers -- some just get caught and others don't. Either way, it's forgivable at this point in his life.

Obama should focus more on fiscal accountability, and Romney should focus more on personal accountability.
My two cents. I'm just gonna say this without really explaining but no, Obama is in no way an incredibly left-win president. By an American scale I'd characterize him as being a left leaning moderate, by a European scale Obama is pretty much a conservative.
As for the budget stuff afaik Obama's policies should lower the deficit considerably in the long term rather than lowering it within the span of his time as President. As for Romney I think he'd advocate collective farms if he thought it would win him an election, seems like it at least. All this is just imo.
