Now give every one of those rioters a semi-automatic. What's the result now?
Well, gee, pull your head out of your ass and think what you would do if you were one of the rioters and you had a semi-automatic. Would you continue looting defenseless stores, or would you engage in a firefight against people with rifes, shotguns, and protected by a concealed position. How many times does it have to be repeated that criminals go after easier targets. Anytime they face possible confrontation, they avoid it in favor of less confrontation.
Yep, two killed and two injured. Pretty pathetic, I wonder what goes through the 'minds' of these people who open fire on defenceless people.
Also see that people are calling for the deportation of Piers Morgan for saying a pro-gun advocate was a dangerous man who didn't care about the deaths from these shootings - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20838729. I'll admit to no love lost for Morgan, the man is an unpleasant media whore, but he has a point when he notes that it's strange people want him to be deported for attacking the 2nd Amendment when he was simply exercising his rights under the 1st.

I just encountered this story from the Washington Post's coverage, it is all so knee jerkish. It is a micro-scale, rally around the flag effect in the wake of tragedy with no Constitutional merit whatsoever. There is an odd scent of xenophobia around this as well.

The overriding issue for me is that all the data shows gun control laws don't work and in fact give freedom to violent offenders to do whatever the fuck they want.
What data are you talking about....?
All studies. ALL of them.
Look up any government or collegiate study. Go to studies started by organizations for the control of fire arms. It doesn't matter, any study done on a region over a certain population regardless of religion, culture, economic status, ethnicity or any other variable you can think of shows the same evidence. Gun laws are counter productive to the reduction in violence.
The exceptions being studies from dictatorial or communist nations that flat out BS any data to support their gun control policies. And the small towns/outliers which are very hard to find anyway.
I will state that there is evidence that gun control laws reduce the number of FATAL homicide attempts in about 50% of the studies conducted.
And if want to do your own research make sure to read the article. Headlines=politics, numbers=facts.
You need o give us some sources. Just presenting statements without any proof is not really contributing.

America's gun culture always carries with it the scent of xenophobia, here we just get a nice big whiff.

Hardly, I'm pro gun ownership..........
Doesn't mean you aren't prejudiced obviously. I've never in my life gotten a "scent of xenophobia" regarding gun culture. Sounds to me like you have this preconceived image in your head of the stereotypical "white racist republican redneck."

Ok, so if everyone had guns criminals would just go after those with the weakest guns. There will always be criminals.

I'm sorry that people don't realize the petition about Piers Morgan is tongue-in-cheek. People don't expect him to get deported. There have been a number of tongue-in-cheek petitions filed lately. It's more a statement about the Administration and this "petition" website than anything else.

Yes, there will always be criminals. The objective is to prevent you and your family from becoming a victim. One effective way of achieving that is gun possession. By the way, does anybody think that none of the rioters had guns ? Some in this thread would have you believe that the only reason those Koreans weren't getting shot at is because no rioters had guns. Actually, they weren't shot at because rioters with guns were targeting defenseless establishments, as were the rest of the rioters.

"I've never smelled shit, therefore it does not exist" Are you serious? My experience with gun culture, having grown up in Ohio, is going to be incredibly different than yours, which deals more with California iirc. Sounds to me like you have this preconceived image in your head of "everyone who believes differently that I is prejudiced".
Gun shows in Ohio are full of people like this. + Show Spoiler +
And the whole reason I seized upon Servo's "scent" analogy is because it doesn't make sense to indict every gun owner.

Then why is your link to someone from Texas ? Couldn't you have posted a link backing up your actual comment, from one of the huge number of people who are actually at Ohio gun shows ?
It just baffles me that people can get away with these blanket insults, basically saying "people who are into guns tend to be xenophobic (read: racist)." You feel that way, which is a prejudice, obviously. You can think your prejudice is right because of how you grew up, that's how most people get their prejudices after all.
Most Ohio gun shows have pretty strict photo policies, so getting incriminated pictures is more difficult there than elsewhere. And again, let me reiterate why I seized upon the "scent" analogy. I am not saying that gun owners are racist, or even that owning a gun makes one more likely to be a racist. I am simply suggesting that in many places where gun culture is represented most strongly, gun shows being the best example, there are almost always a few people, a "scent" if you will, that clearly celebrate xenophobic beliefs. Whether that be the dude with the nazi paraphernalia behind the table, the Obama/Arab shooting targets, or the "guns are what make us better than you" style t-shirt slogans.

"Concerning murder victims for whom race was known, 50.4 percent were black, 47.0 percent were white, and 2.6 percent were of other races".
"Of the offenders for whom race was known, 53.1 percent were black, 44.6 percent were white, and 2.3 percent were of other races. "
I really don't think this is a "white supremacy" issue. Are there instances of it? Yes. Are there stereotypes? Yes. Is there any real data that suggest this is a serious social problem at this time? Not really.
From the perspective of criminal offenses, I think you're on point, BluePanther. But, there are other factors that are somewhat troubling, this SPLC study immediately comes to mind.
The number of groups whose ideology is organized against specific racial, religious, sexual or other characteristics has risen steadily since 2000, when 602 were identified, the center said. Antigay groups, for example, have risen to 27 from 17 in 2010.
The report also described a “stunning” rise in the number of groups it identifies as part of the so-called patriot and militia movements, whose ideologies include deep distrust of the federal government.
In 2011, the center tracked 1,274 of those groups, up from 824 the year before.
“They represent both a kind of right-wing populist rage and a left-wing populist rage that has gotten all mixed up in anger toward the government,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center and the author of the report.

People call for anything. When Obama was re-elected a few states filed for separation away from the union (of states).
That said, I'm no legal expert, but Morgan doesn't have the right under the first amendment to slander a pro-gun advocate. The first amendment has limitations, and I'm pretty sure baseless defamatory remarks are not protected. I'm sure it's not worthy of being deported, but Morgan should know better. He makes himself sound like a moron.
