hey, I recently went to hugo boss outlet to buy a suit but decided not to. The fit was awesome for my athletic build but the quality was pretty bad for the price. ($700 for the basic super 100 wool). Any advice on what other store has similar cut/style to HB with the same/better fabric for a lower price? (Maybe Moores, strellson?)
- I heard Strellus manufactures HB suits as well?

I just graduated high school and I`m now working a part time job while I wait for the fall and college to come around. The clothes im looking for are mostly for going out to parties and out to eat to nice restaurants. I`ve been told the style of clothes I have been looking at are too formal for these types of outings.
TL;DR I need help with getting the staples of a wardrobe. I make about 200-300$ a week and have a significant amount of money saved up already. I need some basics that I can build off of. That's a fair amount of money. Save it all up for the most part and invest in a few good pieces. I've read a lot online about getting a good pair of boots and a good pair of denim and just getting other seasonal necessities and spending the rest of your cash on other shit, which i can get with. Where do you live? Snow? Get a good down jacket, maybe a peacoat. Other than that, raw denim (personal preference, but if you're investing long term you may as well have the memories from the fadezzzz), a nice pair of shoes you can use in most situations, some shirts, maybe a light jacket, and mix and match. Invest in nice underwear. I agree a lot with bigtony except a few points. By the way, where are you going to college? Go to Macy's or whatever your local department store is and browse the clearance racks. The bad news is that at this point you've most likely missed everything good. The good news is that you've only just graduated high school so you have plenty of time to build up a wardrobe. Find local thrift/consignment stores have a direction before you go off and start buying things. look up how you might want to dress, break it down, and the buy pieces. plan it out, and go shopping with something in mind, and not just "oh ill buy whatever i want." if money isn't an option buy something mid range so it'll stay through college. nothing too expensive cause you're in college - shit will happen. make sure you look for quality!!!!3. Here's a few good starting items: 'grown up' jeans - blue/dark blue jeans with no artificial wear or patterns or adornments in slim/straight with a medium to low rise (depending on your body type). (http://www.bonobos.com/dark-rinse-slim-straight-leg-denim-for-men-flatiron) find a pair of raws under $200 and they'll last a few years. APC is always good for beginner level but theres tons of other stuff. the reason i advocate it is because the marks that you get while wearing them will stay, and you'll have the memory of how you lost the back pocket of your jeans for the future when you see them. Khaki pants - slim/straight with a medium/low rise (again depending on your body shape) (http://www.bonobos.com/khaki-slim-straight-leg-pants-for-men-the-khakis or http://www.bonobos.com/stone-slim-fit-chinos-for-men-stone-cutters) a pair of pants that aren't jeans is always nice. get something that fits, and is appropriate for the weather. if its gonna snow, you want something maybe thicker so you don't freeze, and perhaps has room for long johns or whatever and isnt skin tight. if its warm year round, a lighter pair is fine. its perfectly cool to have one of each though. One other pair of dress pants, preferably in wool - grey (my preference) or navy. NOT BLACK NOT BLACK NOT BLACK. Buy black pants because they seem dressy is an amateur guy mistake. Black pants is not the male equivalent of the little black dress for women. The male equivalent would be a grey suit. Black pants are a BITCH to keep clean and don't actually look nice with anything. Stay away. get a suit (grey or navy), and use the pants as a separate if you need to dress it down. eventually you'll need it for interviews or whatever. just make sure there's room to account for you growing (you gain weight in college lol), so don't over tailor until you know your body type wont change. also you'll need it for prom, dont rent a tux zzzzzzButton up shirts - white/light blue are very 'grown up'/business colors, but as a younger person go with something with more personality. Solid colors (something that complements your eyes and skin tone!), check patterns, etc. I'm not a huge fan of stripes. Stay away from polo shirts unless you are fucking JACKED. They look like shit on everyone else. A properly fitting button up is just as comfortable and way more versatile. (http://www.bonobos.com/royal-blue-gingham-shirts-for-men-ging-arthur or http://www.bonobos.com/shirts-for-men-parliament-squares). Want to look baller as fuck? Wear pink and purple/lavender; women LOVE it.
Grey blazer/sportcoat (or the whole suit if you can afford it) - want to add swag to any outfit? Put a blazer on it. get a nice white/blue spread collar for when you need it, a solid tie, and you'll be fine for that. as for casual shirts, depends on your direction. i'd recommend some kind of OCBD in a solid color, and something patterned so you can still keep it casual. many sources, just ask. on pink and lavender, a lot of girls wont give a fuck or wont know to notice imo. all theyll see is that you take the effort to look ok and be attracted to that. the color wont matter. a blazer is nice but i rarely wear it in college so fuck it. use the suit separate jacket. if you get a sportcoat for the cold make sure you dont look like a professorBy spreading out your purchases over the next few years you can have a great wardrobe when you graduate, BUT I would be careful how you spend your money at this point. As a guy it's very possible you will grow until you are 21 which will change your height/arm length and neck size. On top of that most college kids gain weight which will influence your size. yea seriously. dont overbuy, plan everything out. ill post up a list of shit i plan to buy this year to round out my closet later as an example.
ive got lots of other things but its all situational and not clothing related (but dorming related lololol) so ill write all that shit out some other time. best of luck!Even just $300 can go a long way if you shop carefully. Budget between $50-100 per pair of pants, 30-60$ per shirt, and $75-150 for a decent blazer/sportcoat (plus costs of tailoring). First off I want to thank you and bigtony so much for the long well thought out responses. A couple things I didn't think to mention at first is that I live in north Texas in a suburb of Dallas/Ft Worth. So its starting to warm up already down here lol. I have an athletic build, but I`m not JACKED like you said. I plan on going to college in Austin Texas.
Since my last post I have gone shopping around to thrift stores and a couple department stores. I bought a 5 or 6 button ups. A couple flannels, oxford button down style shirts, and a few solid ones
Luckily I already had a few pairs of well fitting jeans so I think im good on those.
I went out and bought chinos in a few different colors and a pair of corduroy pants. Sadly I have to take a pair or two back because they are too short for my legs.
I found a pair of really nice dress shoes(from my perspective) for only 5$ at a thrift store they are Italian leather nordstrom shoes, I`m having them resoled so I will post pics of them after I get them back (I`m pretty proud of them) I have a question about when I can wear them and if they are a no no without a suit, and more stuff like that but I assume that you would need a picture to tell me that so I`ll try and get one as soon as I can.
I also dont really understand what situations a tie is acceptable and if they are too formal. I think I heard that smaller ties are casual but I have really limited knowledge on the subject.
Last thing is a question about is when you said this + Show Spoiler +Grey blazer/sportcoat (or the whole suit if you can afford it) - want to add swag to any outfit? Put a blazer on it. Suit vs Blazer because I have the money for a suit but I dont really know what to look for in one and when I can wear the jacket by itself and what with.
Thanks again. I`ll be sure to post some pictures if you want when I get a new phone with a usb in the next few days.

The rule for ties is simple. If you're going to button the top button, wear a tie. If you think the top button undone is too casual, wear a tie. Always err on the dressy side, imo.
I think a big part of this also has to do with the casual/business side. If you're going somewhere for a casual meeting, such as a sports bar, don't wear a tie. If you're going to a nice restaurant, wear a tie. Same goes for basically everything else. A tie is kind of like a power symbol. You'll be associated as a person with power. If that's not your goal, then go without. Suit = tie, sports jacket = no tie (for me). You're less approachable when wearing a tie but you'll be taken more seriously, in my experience.

On January 21 2013 07:16 FliedLice wrote:No problem, I guess that's enough of an answer Been browsing blogs and forums a little the last couple of days. It's pretty interesting and all, but the clothes they're discussing there just tend to be WAY more expensive than what I am able to pay on clothes.
A lot of people ask that same question and I understand why, I probably would do the same thing myself. Being able to make a full outfit of a certain designer take a lot of time. Partly because of the finances but primarily because making a good looking outfit that both look 'awesome as f***' and that you are comfortable wearing takes a lot of time and try.
It really is expensive for the most part, but even people that spend a huge amount on these pieces buy also at sales and used clothing. There are different sites for this: Superfutures marketplace, StyleZeitgeist (being a very good forum for everything that has to do with this, lots of interesting discussions and such) and also eBay are those that I primarily use.
In the beginning though I had this feeling whenever I saw a crazy piece at a somewhat low cost I instantly bought it thinking that making my wardrobe really big very fast would give me good style. But you soon enough find out that having a lot of pieces isn't necessarily the same as having good style. Also for someone new to it's important to notice that mixing a lot of designers with each other (I still find this difficult), at least if the designers aren't in the same "style" (street, more formal wear etc.) can be very difficult to mix.
Just threw something out ^^

Budget is not a problem.
My country is summer all-year round. So we wear pants/jeans with normal T-shirts/etc.

Hey guys, simple question here, I usually dress in a sweater + button down + tie for school on mondays along with formal shoes (double monkstraps :3) and such. I'm wondering, what is the general attitude toward sweaters in here. Do you guys consider them in fashion, are they situational, how should I be wearing sweaters?

What year of school are you in o_o
Is it cold?
Y) sweater N) no sweater
Stop caring if things are in fashion and start caring if you like what you're wearing and if it fits you

Such an important idea, yet often overlooked. Fashion comes and goes, but style is personal, and it never fades. If it fits, and you're comfortable in it, you will look good. No, not everyone will like what you're wearing, but putting on more fashionable clothes to make a look that you don't totally own is so transparent that no one will respect you.

Hey I have a question about finding a new hairstyle. I want a short/short-med hairstyle and my hair is kinda wavy and a bit thin on the top (note: could I use something like rogain for this?) any suggestions would be nice. Any more details I'd be happy to oblige.
I don't want to post my picture on a public forum but if someone wants it I'll pm it.

That's all relative. I think white ties are baller. I wish I had one, I would rock that shit like a mofo, but yea the MLG guys look wack :D

White ties imply that the shirt is dark, which contrasts badly considering most suits are darker. Even for lighter suits, white is too extreme of a color, and is too lacking of color. Especially since light suits tend to be very neutral and needs highlighting.
