the only one I linked were the SEH Kelly and the dries one?? Juliette linked a few jackets though.
Just to make it clear - the look I want to go for is don draper (original, I know). Humphrey Bogart sports a similar coat in Casablanca, if you ignore the massive lapels. The original coats like that are made by Mackintosh, but they're out of my price range (barring sales, I guess). Styling-wise, I don't mind too much, but it needs to be simple and cleancut - so two pockets, not quilted, nothing too outrageous. I don't know what the belt in such a coat is called but I could without it - it's bound to get in the way more than it helps. Colours I like are beige (#1 choice), navy/khaki.
In a nutshell, this. Except £200 cheaper. Although I like the dries one I linked earlier, too.

Doing peacoat research is so fucked lol
I stuck with a Fidelity brand for 1/3 of that lol. Cut isn't too bad, although its part synthetic. It also doesn't weigh 8lbs...

It also doesn't weigh 8lbs... most if not all peacoat blends are part synthetic nowadays. an ~80wool/20synthetic blend is about ideal. it's pointless to have a full wool because a small proportion of poly/acrylic/nylon fibers both strengthen the overall structure of the coat, insulate better, and give it a silkier feel without sacrificing the original properties of wool that make it such a stellar candidate for outerwear. it also lowers the cost on both the consumer and manufacturer, so it's mostly beneficial.
that said, melton wool/cashmere blends are still better for all the obvious reasons, or wool/silk, etc.

Hey guys, my first post here. Any suggestions for what else to add to my closet? Right now I have in rotation
tons of t-shirts: solid colors and graphic 3 oxfords: white, blue, grey 1 pair of chinos: beige 3 pairs of jeans: blue, black, grey 2 sweaters: grey, maroon 3 cardigans: dark grey, aqua blue, maroon 2 hoodies: blue, maroon shoes: various sneakers, mostly black
Right now, the only glaring holes to me are a nicer outer coat for the upcoming fall/winter, some nice deep navy jeans, and a pair of nicer casual shoes. For the coat I'd definitely like a nice pea coat which is funny cause you guys happen to be talking about them. I love the sterlingwear one but I'm not willing to drop that much just yet. Any recommendations on any pea coats, maybe sub 100/150? I'm not to worried about how long it'll last I just would like something warm for now. I ordered a pair of J&M Meltons from Amazon for 103 which temporarily fills my dressier shoe void. I really love the Park Avenues but the color I want isn't on sale so I'll pass for now but I definitely plan on copping a pair of those. And finally for the navy denim. I think I'd like a nice pair of raw denim but I'm still not willing to shell out that much yet so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Unbrandeds? Basically I'm looking for solid pieces on a budget. I'm willing to give up a bit on the quality of the items to keep it affordable for now. Uniqlo items preferred since I work there aha. Thanks in advance and sorry if I didn't leave enough info. Let me know and I'll try to add to it.
Edit: I might be interested in picking up a blazer to wear casually as well. Thoughts on charcoal vs navy?

Can someone suggest some clothing to buy for a guy who's been basically been wearing t-shirts/sports shorts/sandals his entire life? I've moving up to NorCal after being in Socal all my life and I'm wanting to upgrade my wardrobe entirely (which consists of only said 3 items).
Any fashion tips (shirts/pants/outerwear/shoes) for this fellow nerd in the NorCal weather?

Sure, what's your general body type, age, and what kind of work do you do for a living? (are you wearing suits a lot, etc)

I'm a skinny 18 year old 5 foot 7 Asian going off to college :D. I'd prefer wearing shorter pants but jeans are alright. Its just that the weather where I live is usually too warm for jeans/long pants.

I think for both of you, Demoninja and yummyChurros, it'd be a good idea to start lurking around forums (there's a list in the OP), look at threads of people's selfies, and figure out what kind of looks you like.
Demoninja, I have one of these. http://fidelitypeacoat.com/ Held up pretty well, though it's only been through one winter. I would think about sizing up one depending on your measurements. I'm about a 34/35 chest and I got a 34, and it's a little tight (but not too tight)
For jeans, I think you should save up to around the $200 price point and buy something nicer. Though I've heard okay things about unbrandeds, they seemed a little thin from what I've handled. Also, Gustin is in that price range of sub 100 raws. Also uniqlo jeans lol.
How much is the discount at uniqlo??? you could become TL's official dealer lolololol.
yummyChurros, norcal isnt that much colder but if you've lived in socal all your life it'll be a shock. Again, look online at different looks because I don't know what your aesthetic is. For demon, he seems to have a good grasp at basics, but you're completely redoing your closet and not just adding pieces in. Don't buy a lot at once, just wear what you wear and add things as needed.
Of course there's always a list of basics everyone can wear and look okay. OCBDs, chinos, t shirts, jeans, some nice sneakers. They work in any weather, and you can just add layers to make it warmer.
Regardless, the most important thing for you is to look around and decide how you want to look.
What price range of things are you looking at?
What school are you headed to, btw?

In general it's a little hard to suggest pieces to add to your closets because it's all based on your personal style. For demoninja, andy could come in and suggest a schneider hooded coat (those things are fucking beautiful), I could suggest some kind of sportscoat, and technically they would both be appropriate.
Far easier for us to suggest specific pieces, ala, I want a pair of jeans under $150 where do I look, and I would answer with gustin/unbranded for sun $100, and gilt or other flash sales for N&F (and if you get lucky, APCs).

Easy one is to try a new pair of shoes. Boat shoes are quite popular or penny loafers will instantly up your style. Even tennis shoes like Fred Perry ones or Penguin by Munsingwear will add some nice change.
Secondly if you LIKE wearing t-shirts there's no particular reason to change that other than for professional or formal purposes. They are really versatile anyways... I'm a firm believer that you don't need to pick flashy and stylish clothes just for the sake of "upping" style. If you want to change it up a bit buy some henleys, its just a t-shirt with buttons on the front or try Polos. Pick what you like, not what fashion mags say you need to wear.
Pick up some a pair of light linen pants from anywhere in biege or khaki, it will last forever, easy to dress-up or down and won't be too hot in NoCal I hope.... (from Canada so I have no clue exactly how hot it is there)
|
bay area is generally 50s-60s (F) I think. At least, berkeley was when I looked it up. of course it gets hotter though but I'm pretty sure those were the medians.
once you get used to it that's t shirt and shorts weather.

also have a fit

My posture sucks but I feel so comfortable in that, dunno what it was. Felt like I was in my own skin for once. But I need fk trainers.

I'm assuming you're going to cal so: weather in Berkeley isn't too bad, 70-90 in summer and 50-70 in the winter. the most you're going to need to wear is just a sweater after you get acclimated. at night it gets a bit colder but again, it's honestly not too bad. sf and other coastal cities feel a bit colder because there's always a breeze and there's the whole normalization of temperatures through ocean proximity. San Jose and Santa Clara are like more extreme versions of Berkeley by about 5-10 degrees; it is hotter in the summer and colder in the winter. I've experienced next to freezing temperatures there (30-40) frequently during winters.
pls don't wear penny loafers in college. especially not in freshman year. you're 18, not 35.
