This bill (SOPA & PIPA) has enough reach and power to effectively destroy the internet as we know it. It will enable any company and any NGOs the ability to shut down a website on both ends, freeze payments on both ends for ANY content that they see fit.

It will only affect america, but if a website goes down in america that's half of the english speaking world unable to access it. That's gonna seriously ruin all their days. Not to mention US based search engines won't be allowed to list it in their results, so you cant find em on google. As for what we can do, it's limited by the lack of accountability senators have to us.

Try to access an article from wikipedia, not the entry page. Search something there and go to that page. It will show the page and shortly after the SOPA page will appear.

The page actually renders and then redirects to the sopa protest page, so turning off javascript should stop the redirect too.

It's no real threat at this point, as there has been so much publicity around the bill. The supporters always sound stupid, while the negatives are just blatantly clear. I am not worried about the bill at all, and I highly doubt anything will come of it. If you truly are afraid, please link me to sources that give you good reasons to be, rather than OMG TEH INTERNETZ IS GONNA DIE!! It's not going anywhere unless it passes, and it doesn't look like it's going to pass. While I'm not really worried about it either, that's no reason to just stop protesting until it's 100% dead in the water... right? Not like it costs money to protest ![]()

Then we all have to go through this again and again as they just keep up the business as usual. Its not my job to pressure congress that is their job to fix problems not make new ones. The whole system has been broken and gets worse by the year. Welcome to American politics, where everything is shit.
