I'm sorry but tequila is not a good spirit. Until proven otherwise I will keep believing that tequila is the stuff that comes out of the bladders of not-so-recently-dead coyotes, that has then been fermented and infused with antifreeze. It's not a good spirit, it is the bottled tears of Satan himself.

I've recently bought a Glen Elgin (16y). Lovely smooth taste with some power because of the cask strength (58.5%)
One of my favorite whiskys so far!

Right, I like whisky but I have no idea what the different terms mean and what taste correspond to those.
My usual drink is Jack Daniels on the rocks (I know some of you will be going "sinner!") and occasionally some Bells. However I have tried Farmhouse Grouse (ewww!) and Special Reserve (Tesco stuff, equally eww).
I was wondering if someone could give me a brief overview of the types and whisky, and the corresponding "sterio-typical tastes" please .
Yours Faithfully,
Aspiring Whisky Lover.

hey, maybe u can give me some tips for some new whiskeys - I tried alot latley from Highland park to Glenfiddich, but the only ones I like are Lagavulin16 & Cragganmore ...
|
Been getting in to the Glenfiddich lately, quite nice... Very easy to drink.
|
Esto: If you like smoky single malts, The Caol Ila Distillers Edition is imho the best whiskey you can get for a resonable amount of money (50-100 euros). The Lagavullin Distillers Edition and the Laphroaig Quarter Cask are also very very good.

Tried a Glenrothes single malt this christmas. Oaky with some vanilla tones, i really enjoyed it.

As soon as my student loan came in I bought a bottle of JD £18 When I first opened it smelt like glue and taisted horrible However now after 4 months leaving its not too bad now I drink it often with coke
|
Just got introduced to "good" whiskey last night. Threatened by the owner of the bottle to "not fucking mix that shit with cola" lol Turns out the bottle was "barely legal" @ 18 years old, at the low low price of 300$ for a 26er haha
I never drink hard booze, but damn, this stuff actually didn't taste like rubbing alcohol! Any bottle of anything 30-40% has always tasted rough to me.
Special shout out to the fine ass woman who hooked us up and taught us a bit of class

Got a bottle of 18 year old Glenfiddich for Xmas - very happy indeed :-)

That's my favorite, almost done with the bottle, but took me a long time. Super strong stuff, gets you pretty out there fast.

got this one for my birthday, it's delicious. But I always look a gift horse in the mouth and saw the price of this one. So, maybe I haven't got the fine taste as the whisky pro's, but to me, the taste isn't thàt much better than say like, the more standard version a a brand. So I recommend you buy almost two bottles of the 10y old Springbank instead. However, one whisky that does really adds something in my opinion, is one that is already mentioned before I believe, the Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or. I really liked that one. But for now, I go along with Faerie and drink some Ardbeg. Cheers

Ok, if you can believe the World Whiskey awards I'm now at the "end" of the road My brother bought me this 4-time winner for Christmas!

Are there any people who know some about rums? After falling in love with whisky, I tried a few and there are some really quality rums that are pure joy to taste. Not as complex as whisky and usually more mild, but still wonderful and warming (especially at christmas! :D). I think if you like whisky, you might want to extend your horizon and also try other good spirits. So rum (followed by cognac, grappa and tequila) is the obvious next choice. So far (not regarding mix rums like regular Appleton white/estate vx or havanna club/captain morgan, overproofs like Old Pascas and crap stuff like regular Bacardi), I got: - Appleton Estate Extra 12yo - this one is from Jamaica which means it is very strong in flavor. Afaik Jamaica rums is like Islay for Whiskys. Of course not peaty, but close in terms of strength and richness of flavor. ![[image loading]](http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2GSDbtxkLYngMIqgpLtFdXVIODUkWFuCoChUfnqfvRJf1AbS3UxXPDJCZ) - Angostura 1919 - got this one today, it is from Trinidad&Tobago (started by a german guy almost 200 years ago :D). Wow. So sweet and full of vanilla. I love it. ![[image loading]](http://www.anybooze.com/ekmps/shops/anyboozecom/images/angostura-1919-premium-rum-96-p.jpg) Now I am wondering which rums in the price class from 15-50 Euro are recommendable as well. I heard good stuff about Zacapa. But I would have to order that one and get it shipped. Also, at the superstore (Handelshof) I usually shop in, they have some bottles from Ron Barcelo and Metusalem, both from Dominican Republic, both between 15-40 Euros (different kinds). Curious if those are any good. They also got stuff like Myers and Mount Gay, but I suppose that's rather mixing stuff and not thaaaaat good quality (not cheap, but not good enough to drink it pure, probably awesome for a good Mai Tai), correct me if I am wrong. Give me some recommendations please. :o)
I'd like to know a bit about rum myself, for the very simple reason that I'd like to extend my horizons. I have a bottle of Ron Zacapa 15 years old and I don't like it very much. It really doesn't have much taste or the sting of hard liquor.
I can taste that it's quality liquor, but it doesn't leave me with any excitement for the next sip. Then again, maybe I was expecting too much from this particular kind of rum. I very much like drinks with character and the Zacapa 15 is bland.
However, I will definitely try to pick up a bottle of Matusalem or Angostura on my next shopping trip to Germany : D

I usually drink scotch preferably single malt , but some of the blended like this one is quite good
![[image loading]](http://internationalcellars.com.au/images/Chivas%20Royal%20Salute.jpg)
I occasionally drink cognac too
![[image loading]](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_O6XYRW2I75o/S__8V6FvGuI/AAAAAAAAAL4/SswM-3UiUDc/s320/Hennessy+XO+3.jpg)
But my personal favorite is this
![[image loading]](http://www.licoresjaco.com/images/glenfiddich%2021.jpg)
I really dislike most Johnnie Walker though , i find most of their product taste bland

As everyone knows, the finest whiskeys come in handles. I have one of Old Grandad bourbon that I've been enjoying, can anyone recommend another cheap bourbon?

How did you guys get into whisky in the first place? Did you have to get used to it or is it in your genes?
I personally am a beer-enthusiast when it comes to alcohol but I'm also interested in learning more about whisky in general.

So I had a good xmas. My collection current has
Macallan 12 sherry oak- very sweet and sherry influenced. A great introduction to scotch, even got my mother to down a dram
Glenfiddich15- another light malt, honey is the dominant smell and flavor. Not even a hint of peat and smoke. But a very nice floral whiskey. Light years better than the 12 year and only a few bucks more
A Battlehill bottling of a macallan 14 year old fine oak. currently in the glass next to me. Spicy and oaky nose that is equally spicy in the mouth. A very hot scotch but very light on the peat/smoke
Glenmorangie 10- This one is kind of lost on me. Its good no doubt, maybe too complex for my current palate, But i can't really discern much
Talisker 10- The Show Stopper of this Xmas. Holy shit this is a brilliant scotch. Very peaty, but extremely balanced-- no where close to a peat or smoke bomb. Absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a full bodied scotch!
Highland Park 12- sits sweet and light in the mouth then kicks you with smoke in the throat. Probably the best and most well rounded sub 50 dollar bottle you can buy
Laphroaig 10- THE Peat Monster. A scotch reserved to warm a close friend on a cold night, or to poison an enemy. Wasn't even banned during prohibition-- was sold as tonic because of its medicinal phenolic qualities. If you like the smoke- you can't go wrong w/ laphroaig
I'm def getting an Ardbeg when I'm at school but I'm torn between the 10 year and the ugildial. Has anyone tried both? Obviously the ugildail is much more expensive but its significantly higher abv which more or less means my drams will cost the same. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!!
