in a way, worse though was that the ads i was seeing were for a product i find reprehensible. mail order brides are an exploitation based industry and generally pure evil. i recognize that TL probably has little or no choice in the kind of ads that get run but i can not reconcile my conscience with somehow providing support to an industry that is so despicable. it should mean something that i overwhelmingly support legalization of prostitution and still am angered greatly by this nightmarishly evil business. plus the ads on streams issue....

I'm not taking offense here though, just saying that your statement can be interpreted in this way. I would like to think that there are a lot of very intelligent, cultured and educated people reading and contributing here. But I have to say that I have ad-block on to save bandwidth, memory, etc. Makes the internet less bloated, it's in my interest to leave it on. To add an exception in ad-block for your website, in my case, far exceeds the potential utility for you. Might take me 15 minutes to learn how and properly apply the filter. The money I would be generating for you is (hyperbolic) 7,000,000 times less than the market value of my time. I'm figuring 0.0001% chance of me generating 2 cents by clicking an ad by accident. I would also add that you're using an advertising model because you're forced to, not as a courtesy. Competing message boards would eat TL alive if it decided to charge for participation/membership. I've built a few mildly successful websites in my time and total traffic maybe approaching one million. I don't expect anyone coming in my hobby websites to care about the infinitesimal moral economics because the reality of message boards is that they can be replaced by someone who will let them run for free. In the end no one should care about the moral economy here. It's infinitesimal fractions of cents and they don't even matter if they're brought together. What I'm ok with is spending the hundred dollars on the GomTV vods this year. Now you're talking about a scale that actually matters, paying market value for a product with significant costs. Your situation isn't unique. All the reasons you outlined apply to almost everyone. Yet we unblock TL because we want to do our part to support it.

Lots of advertising is not paid by clicks, but by impressions. Working in the online advertising industry, I could elaborate a lot, but for now, I won't. ![]() I'll just say that you are plain wrong, someone clicking through many pages of threads could bring TL several cents. And clicks are worth way more than 2 cents, the cheapest ones are in the 25 cent region, expensive ones are several dollars, and when it comes to conversions (someone actually buying something), these are worth up to 80 dollars and more.

The amount of misinformation in this thread is astounding, everyone on the internet knows so much!

Every year, millions of people think they know better than anyone else, and thus become insufferable to everyone around them. It's a horrible affliction that has stymied modern medicine. It's called 'rational egoism'. Symptoms include becoming pretentious and irritating, losing all your friends, and becoming 'that guy'. Don't be that guy. Please take precautions to avoid becoming one of the sad and lonely group of people each year who are stricken with this plague. Be nice to your fellow man. Go out of your way to help others in need. Enjoy life. If you, or someone you know is suffering from rational egoism please contact your local homeless shelter, soup kitchen, food pantry, religious denomination, or any miscellaneous charity. Please, friends don't friends become rational egoists.

I disabled adblock on TL but on occasion I still get the elephant if the ad is fetched from a domain that's blocked via noscript. I love TL but not enough to enable ads for every website I visit. Some of them are just ridiculous. Not sure what I can do to help =\ If there's a workaround, I'd be happy to apply it.

I still see the elephant banner but I also see the ads so I guess it's fine.
