I don't think a thread exists for this topic yet, seeing as the previous Palestinian UN bid thread was closed.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-20128358/u.s-cuts-unesco-funding-after-palestinian-vote/
http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Backchannels/2011/1101/After-UNESCO-Palestine-vote-could-US-defund-nuclear-watchdog-IAEA-too
http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/with-unesco-membership-granted-palestinians-seek-to-join-16-more-un-agencies-1.393134

So yesterday, Palestine was accepted almost unilaterally (107-14) in UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization). Shortly after, the US pulled their funding from the organization, which amounts to ~$80 million annually, or 20% of the entire UNESCO funding. This comes because of a 1994 law that requires the US to cut financial ties with any UN organization that recognizes Palestine. As the article states, Palestine's acceptance into the UNESCO means it can easily enter the WIPO (World IP Organization), WHO (World Health Organization), IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), and other UN organizations. This is a pretty big boost of confidence for Palestine.

+ Show Spoiler +

I feel this could be tough for the US administration since the WIPO is important to protecting the IP rights of international US businesses. The US losing influence with the IAEA could also impact Iran's nuclear program. Also, it's quite ridiculous how much influence the US could have on supposedly global organizations.

I also lol at how the Harper is pretty much the faithful dog of the US, following it's every motion.

uh, what kind of stupid law is that that forces a government to cut financial ties to a global organisation because of one country? on what basis?

Do you mind adding the words "Government of" before Canada? Because I don't follow shit.

Edit: Thank you for changing that.

It would be from their relation with Israel almost certainly.

Well this isn't surprising, as appealing to the Jewish community earns American politicians an insane amount of votes and funding while being fair to Palestine earns nothing for elections.

^US is closely allied with Israel. Israel hates Palestine since they want their land. therefore US can't show "sympathy" towards Palestine.

hoooray for democracy. what a shame. i'm glad the unesco had what it takes to accept a 20% loss of income for what is the right thing to do.

Israel has quite the lobby power in the US. As a result, the US administration is generally pro-Israel. The US stood behind Israel pretty much from its inception. There's a reason why the neighboring Arab states have been unable to destroy Israel.

One drawn up by AIPAC.

As for Palestine and the UN/UNESCO, it's definitely a moral victory but does very little in terms of resolving anything. Should they have done it? Hell yeah, it's free PR for the Palestinian government and now the US looks like the bad guy.

The super abridged version?

Israel and Palestine don't like eachother. Israel used to be small, Palestine used to be big. Now it's the opposite.

A lot of rich and powerful jews I guess. (I hope it doesn't sound like I'm a racist, but I think this is the case, I read about it a few years ago)

On Tuesday, Ibrahim Khraishi, the top Palestinian envoy at the U.N. in Geneva, told The Associated Press that Palestinian diplomats are now planning to capitalize on Monday's landslide vote by preparing papers to join the other U.N. agencies and a variety of other international organizations.

I'm very curious to see how this turns out for the UN. Yes, the US is just one country but how many organizations will have funding cuts because of this? It will be very sad to see the US-UN funding reduced over this. I hope a resolution can be found that leaves both sides satisfied.

Please leave the country bashing at the door.

While the total population of jews residing in America is not that significant, they do have a representation in the so called key-states(these are states not automatically democratic or republican) so having them on your side can mean the difference between winning key states or losing them.
