Ignorance to escape the possible consequences... Doesn't seem exclusively Chinese to me. Theres a shitty loophole in the Chinese law right now regarding these kinds of situations, so people are not helping.

As previously mentioned, most if not all of those passerbys would've helped if it wasn't for the fact that the Chinese courts are running out an outdated, broken system.

But at the same time, this happens in varying degrees anywhere in the world.

Thank god I don't have children.

These views are extremely limited. It's only recently that human life has been seen that way.

The fundamentals of any animal / human / creature on the planet all have the same ultimate goal; to strive to continue repopulating their own race. In this sense, every human should look out for one another. I am not a religious fanatic, I'm actually an Athiest. For me, I would help anyone in almost any situation, provided it's not putting more people at risk.

This is truly messed up. However, this reminds me of seeing an hispanic man save a lady from being robbed on the streets in New York. And he ended up getting stabbed fatally by the robber. Meanwhile he laid there for hours bleeding out to death while people ignored him before an Emergency unit arrived. By the time they arrived he was dead. I'm sure you could find the video if you search for it.

This happens far more often than you think. It has to do with the psychology of humans. Many people think other people will step in and help, so they walk on by ignoring it. I can say a whole lot more on the subject, but I noticed there are already many long posts. So I'll keep it short. My apologies if anyone has talked about this instance already. So do not blame just the Chinese. There are lots of shitty things that happen to people who do the right thing here in USA, DESPITE the "good samaritan law".

The reason why no one helps anymore in china is this:

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/opinion/2011-01/05/content_11794724.htm

One case happened where a guy, out the kindness of his heart helped an old lady get up after she fell down, got sued and was forced to pay 40% of the medical fees. There is no good Samaritan law in China which means although you see it, you can do nothing unless you want to take the risk.

In this particular case though, it was heartwrenching to see what the first driver did and the subsequent passerby's do nothing but look but those are risks. I'm going to hope that the first driver that ran her over is caught and charged with attempted murder.

For anyone that understands Cantonese/reads chinese, this link has a slightly better explanation of events.

http://tieba.baidu.com/p/1246963029

Horrible but not much you can do when good intentions can fuck you over. I know when my family goes over to HK/China, we follow the rule of see nothing, do nothing since it's not worth it at all.

If they would make the laws the same as NA, it wouldn't happen or it would at least make it no different from helping or not helping... whereas if you live in China+attempt to help, they could sue you ( the helper ) for whatever...
It's just the laws that make it happen or encourages it more...

Say that as you help her and her mother jumps out of the shadows to sue you for helping

I think it's horrible too but you have to put yourself in their shoes. Their life could be ruined by trying to help this child.

I just realized another fucking problem with that video. Where's the godamn sidewalk? There should be regulations to ensure the presence of sidewalks so you can set easy limits for children, ie stay off the road. There should also be regulations for the vehicles. That thing's as tall as a fucking bus, it had no business .....

Space... there's no space... godamn it. So many issues are interrelated.

People should be more aware of the 'bystander effect'. I'm not saying that environmental and social differences and whatnot don't add to this specific case, but it's not as obvious as it seems.
Couldn't watch more than half a minute of that video either. Really sickening and sad.

EDIT:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

Please at least read about it before making comments of extreme kind. Sadly, we are bounded by varied types of psychological effects of that kind.

Also, offtopic a bit, this lecture describes another bad side of human nature:

Someone puts a gun to little girls head and says if you don't give him your life savings he will pull the trigger. If you refuse he kills her and leaves, you continue with your life as normal.

Helping isn't bad but think abit about what can happen if you do.

Is your family worth that one life?

Having grown up in China, I definitely understand this sentiment. But the fact that this sentiment even exists is ridiculous.
