Our Mission
On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months.
Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.
Who is Occupy Wall Street?
Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.
The original call for this occupation was published by Adbusters in July; since then, many individuals across the country have stepped up to organize this event, such as the people of the NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. There'll also be similar occupations in the near future such as October2011 in Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.

Basically, as far as I can see they're trying to pull something between the civil rights movements of the 1960's and what's been happening in North Africa and the Middle East. Not really expecting anything out of this, and Anon is definitely playing a large part here, but if we get change for the better that certainly will be great.
EDIT: [09/17] Yes, there are regular people like you and me who work in the financial sector. But they work for a minority that got rich off of corruption, and some of the key CEO's of major firms are a large part of the reason this recession started, as well as the huge bubble we've been in from 2002 to late 2007. That minority is what they're protesting, not just the financial sector.
EDIT #2: [09/17] The one question everyone wants to know - what the hell are they doing? I'm going to try and get that answered tomorrow if I can.
EDIT #2A: [09/18] http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/16/technology/occupy_wall_street/ They actually want to debate this on-site. So I'm going to see what they came up with.
EDIT #3: [09/22?] We got mainstream coverage, the reddit link shows all the different sites currently known to report it

^^I would actually have to agree with that, what I'm hoping for is that this protest gathers enough steam to carry forth the Washington one in October. The Wall Street one was designed to last 3 months, I say if it even makes half of that it's a success.

The "people with the guns" follow orders, that is all. They WILL completely ignore your rights when ordered to.
The constitution clearly states that only congress can declare war, last time that happened was WWII, how many wars have we been in since? The supreme court ruled in the 70's that a warrant must be obtained to wire tap, congress over ruled that with the patriot act. Which they don't actually have the power to do, but guess what, they did it anyway. Freedom of expression and speech are also in the constitution, but our government sensors television, which is also a direct violation of the constitution. The constitution guarantees you the right to a lawyer and a trial, but if you are labeled an enemy combatant you are denied all of these rights and they've done it to at least one American citizen already. By the way, there is no criteria for being labeled an "enemy combatant" our government can give this label to whomever they choose and are not required to disclose a reason.
I totally agree that protests are needed in this country, but they really need a greater number of people to do it. When the Iraq war started we saw one of the biggest anti-war protests in world history, guess what 10 years later our troops are still in Iraq.
They will probably just arrest them for something ambiguous like "disturbing the peace" I'd imagine. But again the people with the guns (or the people in charge of the people with guns) make the rules, they do what they want, and a 230 year old piece of paper (the US constitution) isn't going to stop them, is it?
BTW, the protesters may want to bring gas masks, unless they like the smell of tear gas.

I like this guy. And I think that will happen Monday when people actually need to show up to work. Right now the cops are just chilling.

It seems a lot of people in this thread are missing the point.
There's people on Wall Street at the top of various companies who did bad things, knowing they would turn out bad. While I have no doubt that there's some honest-to-goodness Commies supporting this movement hoping for wealth redistribution, I think what people are protesting most is the fiat economy and the fractional reserve system. The fact that our politicians and bankers have created a black hole of debt that can't be repaid, and the fact that they use scare tactics and propaganda to keep the show running to fund perpetual consumerism and perpetual war.
They're not out to get the average desk jockey. They want to make big enough waves to make the big players notice them.
This thread isn't the place to debate which class should pay the most taxes. Its to cover the people protesting, who believe if there are BIG MONEY problems in the world, the people with BIG MONEY should try solving them so we stop suffering.

Hit the nail right on the head.
EDIT #4 [10/12]: Back at last, and holy shit this movement is working, or at least catching everyone's attention from Fox (lol my prediction came true) to high school broadcasting. So what's in the future for the friendly folks at Occupy?
EDIT #5 [10/12]: Also, labor unions are trying to broker a deal with OWS for mutual benefits. Unions get publicity, OWS gets money. Comment on that.
Another interesting link.
Credit to caradoc for this one.
EDIT #6 [10/19]: Check this thread out.
EDIT #7 [10/31]: I think this thread's just going to oblivion. But you know, keep arguing, let this thread stay at the top of the general forum so I can feel special... and the word about OWS gets out and all that stuff. But I want to feel special too.
EDIT #8 [11/14]: Sometime in the very near future I'll have a map of all of the known occupy protests. EDIT: No I won't.
EDIT #9 [03/31]: Occupy is not dead, still ongoing although there's less interesting things to report now. And they say they're planning a second push.
So, TL, give me your famous political rationale on what's going on.
