I was actually wondering why I haven't seen this on Team Liquid (and if I was mistaken please tell and send a link )

https://occupywallst.org/
From the website:
+ Show Spoiler +
Our Mission

On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months.

Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.
Who is Occupy Wall Street?

Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.

The original call for this occupation was published by Adbusters in July; since then, many individuals across the country have stepped up to organize this event, such as the people of the NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. There'll also be similar occupations in the near future such as October2011 in Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.

Basically, as far as I can see they're trying to pull something between the civil rights movements of the 1960's and what's been happening in North Africa and the Middle East. Not really expecting anything out of this, and Anon is definitely playing a large part here, but if we get change for the better that certainly will be great.

EDIT: [09/17] Yes, there are regular people like you and me who work in the financial sector. But they work for a minority that got rich off of corruption, and some of the key CEO's of major firms are a large part of the reason this recession started, as well as the huge bubble we've been in from 2002 to late 2007. That minority is what they're protesting, not just the financial sector.

EDIT #2: [09/17] The one question everyone wants to know - what the hell are they doing? I'm going to try and get that answered tomorrow if I can.

EDIT #2A: [09/18] http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/16/technology/occupy_wall_street/ They actually want to debate this on-site. So I'm going to see what they came up with.

EDIT #3: [09/22?] We got mainstream coverage, the reddit link shows all the different sites currently known to report it

^^I would actually have to agree with that, what I'm hoping for is that this protest gathers enough steam to carry forth the Washington one in October. The Wall Street one was designed to last 3 months, I say if it even makes half of that it's a success.

The "people with the guns" follow orders, that is all. They WILL completely ignore your rights when ordered to.

The constitution clearly states that only congress can declare war, last time that happened was WWII, how many wars have we been in since? The supreme court ruled in the 70's that a warrant must be obtained to wire tap, congress over ruled that with the patriot act. Which they don't actually have the power to do, but guess what, they did it anyway. Freedom of expression and speech are also in the constitution, but our government sensors television, which is also a direct violation of the constitution. The constitution guarantees you the right to a lawyer and a trial, but if you are labeled an enemy combatant you are denied all of these rights and they've done it to at least one American citizen already. By the way, there is no criteria for being labeled an "enemy combatant" our government can give this label to whomever they choose and are not required to disclose a reason.

I totally agree that protests are needed in this country, but they really need a greater number of people to do it. When the Iraq war started we saw one of the biggest anti-war protests in world history, guess what 10 years later our troops are still in Iraq.

They will probably just arrest them for something ambiguous like "disturbing the peace" I'd imagine. But again the people with the guns (or the people in charge of the people with guns) make the rules, they do what they want, and a 230 year old piece of paper (the US constitution) isn't going to stop them, is it?

BTW, the protesters may want to bring gas masks, unless they like the smell of tear gas.

I like this guy. And I think that will happen Monday when people actually need to show up to work. Right now the cops are just chilling.

It seems a lot of people in this thread are missing the point.

There's people on Wall Street at the top of various companies who did bad things, knowing they would turn out bad. While I have no doubt that there's some honest-to-goodness Commies supporting this movement hoping for wealth redistribution, I think what people are protesting most is the fiat economy and the fractional reserve system. The fact that our politicians and bankers have created a black hole of debt that can't be repaid, and the fact that they use scare tactics and propaganda to keep the show running to fund perpetual consumerism and perpetual war.

They're not out to get the average desk jockey. They want to make big enough waves to make the big players notice them.

This thread isn't the place to debate which class should pay the most taxes. Its to cover the people protesting, who believe if there are BIG MONEY problems in the world, the people with BIG MONEY should try solving them so we stop suffering.

Hit the nail right on the head.

EDIT #4 [10/12]: Back at last, and holy shit this movement is working, or at least catching everyone's attention from Fox (lol my prediction came true) to high school broadcasting. So what's in the future for the friendly folks at Occupy?

EDIT #5 [10/12]: Also, labor unions are trying to broker a deal with OWS for mutual benefits. Unions get publicity, OWS gets money. Comment on that.

Another interesting link.
Credit to caradoc for this one.

EDIT #6 [10/19]: Check this thread out.

EDIT #7 [10/31]: I think this thread's just going to oblivion. But you know, keep arguing, let this thread stay at the top of the general forum so I can feel special... and the word about OWS gets out and all that stuff. But I want to feel special too.

EDIT #8 [11/14]: Sometime in the very near future I'll have a map of all of the known occupy protests. EDIT: No I won't.

EDIT #9 [03/31]: Occupy is not dead, still ongoing although there's less interesting things to report now. And they say they're planning a second push.

So, TL, give me your famous political rationale on what's going on.

Interesting idea, shitty stream. They said they are going to ask permission to see if they can camp at the area owned by some people. Can people be forcefully removed even if they go on public property? It reminds me of the vets camping out in D.C. for the G.I. bill back in the day.

If you really think that Wall Street is this completely evil and corrupt force whose goal is to make the lives of the non-super rich awful, you have it very wrong.

I'm not saying no one in that industry is corrupt. There are corrupt people everywhere, from your local community organization, to the boards of the world's largest and most influential companies. But in all honesty, more than 99.9% of people who work in 'Wall Street' (the construct, not the actual street) are just normal people like you and I, doing something for a living that pays the bills and let's them have some financial freedom to enjoy their lives.

Given that Wall Street is closed on the weekends, the people that matter, "big wigs" are chilling in their high rises on the upper west side or on their yachts in Rhode Island, this will probably do nothing. All its going to do is annoy NYPD who responds to everything as the next "event" and European/Asian tourist wanting to take their picture on the steps with the flag and the bull/bear.

The crazy thing is if they really wanted some real coverage, they needed a Tea Party event, nothing attracts the news like a Tea Party, too bad the ideology do not seem to align for this.

I use to live in the financial district and it is so dead their on weekends its hard to get a slice of pizza without going north. I would probably welcome some people protesting to liven up the place.

The problem is that the 99.9% are the ones working for the 0.1% executive demographic, which (if the movie Inside Job is to be believed) between 2002-2007 actually encouraged people to get crappy loans and investments that would fail and all the money would go to them. One of the reasons this recession got started.

Now this kind of stuff happens all the time through history, but the government just let most of them off and brought the rest into financial government positions. But all of them went free. So that's where the top 0.1% of 1% becomes an "enemy of the people", or at least the guys who are out on Wall Street and soon-to-be-Washington.

This idea is a bit silly. That's because more than half of the financial institutions that were involved in the financial crisis are actually located in Midtown New York rather than near Wall Street which is downtown. On Wall Street itself, you have a few stock exchanges and a few large institutions, but the protest would simply miss the point.

Protests are more symbolic than practical. When you see people surrounding government buildings anywhere in the world, the people working there can simply take another route or use helicopters if there's no way of getting in. But once you get enough people speaking out against financial institutions or whatever the protest is that day, others will notice, some will join and eventually the targets have to either suppress the event or give in to the protesters.

Are they executives by any chance?

But if you can bring them onto TL and they can give their side of the story (or simply tell you so you can post up here), I'd be happy to hear it

Stream Chat - getting trolled beyond normal for a stream with 6.2k viewers.
1) People who watch this are more retarded and loud on average than most.
2) I guess someone actually cares.

Given that most these people probably have lives outside of camping on Wall Street, if they want a 20k average, they better actually have like 100-200k involved.

Probably won't be a word of it in US news. If there is I will be surprised. Lyndsay Lohan being caught with drugs is much more important.

To be fair the most important thing about politics is not getting ticked off while being as much of a subversive bitch as possible. Just how things work out when people have competing interests. It's also pretty morally disgusting a lot of the time even though it appears to be the equilibrium solution.

This sounds like an interesting initiative, but being the pessimist I am, I doubt it'll do anything towards its goal. What it might do though, is create a left-wing political splinter similiar to the Tea Party for the republicans. Who knows, maybe what we're seeing here is the beginning of a more varied political discourse and election possibilities in the US?

This will achieve nothing besides making the people involved look like idiots. I'm also 90% certain that the majority of people involved are in the top 1% themselves, and don't even know what kind of income the top 1% entails. All of this, of course, besides the fact that the idea and preconceptions behind it are completely misconstrued.

Tip of the day from me, if you´re gonna commit civil disobediance or direct action like this then dont tell everyone in the world that youre gonna do it, at a specific time at a very specific place. That´s how good initiatives turn into a wall of cops who just say "lol, you guys told us you were gonna go here, you thought we were just gonna let you?" like Ockupationsfestivalen in Sweden.

Activists are always too optimistic and never expect the worst, which is our biggest weakness.

It would be nice, maybe clear up some of the gridlock and break up the parties a little.

But I don't think the rest of the world cared too much, which is why this event even got off the ground. Maybe I'm just one of the optimists though.

EDIT: How long did Ockupationsfestivalen last, and when did it begin to break up?
