I've always been curious about this, especially considering we are all starcraft players, meaning we would have good hand-eye coordination. Hand control however, is a different story. I have good hand eye coordination, but when it comes to writing I sometimes struggle to read some phrases I've written a few months before. One of my limiting factors in improvement is the fact that I can't click as precise as I often would, even if I know what to do.
What is it like with you guys? I'm sure you've had comments about your handwriting before, so you would know if it's good/average/bad.
mine sucks, only legible to myself. then again, most people in the office are the same. lol lol. i wasted my 6000th post on criticising my own handwriting. fail. ==
in elementary schools teachers would freak out marking my stuff because of how messy it was. it's still messy though, but for most things in the world you don't even need to handwrite anymore and even if you do it's not like my writing is completely illegible.
If I try really hard I can right decently, but if you would have looked at my notepad when I was a waiter you would have thought it was a different language not using the english alphabet.
Terrible. My dad just made fun of my handwriting a week ago. It's probably on par with 4th grader most of the time, and it gets worse when I'm jotting down fast notes in class.
My hand-writing is pretty bad. Nothing is consistent, but at the very least its readable. Though, if I do try to put in effort in my writing, it can come out a little nicer than usual.
there are some people who say that i write very well and there are others who can't even read what i'm writing, but in terms of neatness, i think my handwriting is very good.
see for yourselves. (the bottom thing is my signature + initials so don't pay attention to it, it was to test my new tablet)
The whole reason why I started taking a laptop to class was because I myself couldn't understand my notes. Try to write too fast and you end up with nothing.
There are 4 people in the world that I know that can decipher my handwriting completely other than me. Two are teachers, one is a person I work on homework with frequently (who also has kinda messy writing. Which is rare for girls. But she's going into med school so she's on the write track for that profession), and one of my friends. My math busy work can be neat if I want it to be (if it on an exam or if it is to be handed in), but my normal writing is abysmal. I type everything I can. Which is funny, because I suck at typing too (like 40 WPM, just sad for the amount of time I use computers).
I had numerous complaints about my handwriting back when I worked.
My handwriting looks like that of a 5 year old with poor motor skills. My math is quite beautiful though, except I have a tendency to write Greek letters backwards and all of my closed letters and numbers look the exact same (0,a,9,g,8,lowercase sigma...etc).
I guess I'll put average as these cancel each other out. Paragraphs written by me as a whole look so messy even though the individual letters are legible.
I see there must be a pattern between interest in Starcraft and handwriting ability. Well, good to know I'm not the only one. In fact:

This wouldn't be any less true if it came out of my mouth.
I have hardly written anything since the late 90's. I can't even read my own writing to be honest. Not that I care, that is what I have a laptop, PC and a smartphone for. I have zero need to write as an IT Manager.
I love my own handwriting. It's slightly worst than my dads. And he's a doctor. Most people say my writing is terrible when I'm writing fast. It improves considerably when I'm actually concerned with neatness.
Awful... but at least I can usually read my own. And the rise of technology hasn't helped. There are rarely situations where I even need to hand write things anymore... gogo future!
My writing used to be really good back in high school. Then I got into college and it went to shit trying to write on those tiny little auditorium desks and trying to keep up with the professors. Sigh.
If I try to write nicely and I take my time, it's decent I guess. I write quite fast though and because of that it's very, very sloppy. I try to type things as much as I can, but still being in high school there's a lot of stuff that I can't, which is unfortunate. The only time my handwriting is like average is if I'm doing math, lol.
I would say mines average, and sometimes above average after I've been writing for awhile and get the flow going. I write in a sort of half cursive, half printing that's built for speed, so it can look like crap, but if I slow down it's pretty good.
I almost always handwrite as in writing cursive, so in that sense my handwriting is above average. However if I print it's really really bad...numbers are fine though.
I've got a beautiful handwriting and it remains readable for anyone up to the point when I write almost a word per second( then it's readable, but not beautiful , coz i know which parts of every letter make it recognizeable and make accent on them ). im pretty good at painting stuff for an amateur. guess that helps. also i use very very FAT pens that almost swim on the paper. guess that helps
Mine is Below Below Average, but I ripped tendons in my arm as a child which severely affected my writing ability so I guess I kinda have an excuse for writing like I'm in 5th grade.
My handwriting is terrible, especially when i'm writing quickly. I am also left handed which blows because everything smears so i've always hated writing and try to avoid it at all costs. If I can type instead I will do that 100% of the time. Not to mention typing is 1000% faster and always legible.

There arnt very many girls voting so naturally its going to be mostly under average xD
hmm depends if i'm trying or not. my english is terrible cause i don't give a fuck, my mandarin is decent cause i take my time and anything else like numbers is also terrible.
On September 06 2011 09:58 Railxp wrote: apparently, the average handwriting is below average. =p
The average SC playing nerd compared to the general population, yeah. Mine's below average. Some people say it's shit, some people say it would be readable if it were less tiny and cramped. Either way it's terrible.
People say I write like an Asian girl. I blame this on my mom. When I was in 3rd grade, my handwriting was terrible. My mom would erase all my homework and make me start over if it wasn't neat, so I forced myself to have good handwriting. It was cruel and evil at the time, but it definitely pays off now in college when I have to look back on my notes for homework, midterms, and finals.
If I need to write neatly I can - albeit slowly - but otherwise mine is only legible to myself, both in terms of the handwriting and I also use stupidly obscure abbreviations etc
When I look back at my notebook, it's easy to see how at the start of the year I was like 'mmk I'm gonna make it really neat so at the end of the year I can find all my revision stuff easy'
That happens for a few pages... and then eventually just turns into mindless scribbles of words taken out of context with doodles around the edge of the page
If you give me a sheet of graph paper, you can bet your ass I'm filling it in like a chess board
Going to drop some handwriting knowledge on you guys.
Most people have bad handwriting because they are using the wrong muscles to write with. Most people use their wrist/fingers to write with, this is bad form (it gets even worse when you try to write fast).
The muscles you should actually be using are further up your arm (think shoulder area), these are actually more precise and consistent once trained than wrist/fingers...just ask any high level golfer.
The best way to practice is to write large on a chalk/dry-erase board on the wall, as this will limit the amount of wrist action you can use.
I didn't think mine was too bad until one day back when I was in middle school i thought i'd score some points with my girlfriend and leave her a romantic note in her locker. I ended up having to read it to her because she couldn't make out what it said.
Mine is legible I guess, but I don't like it. Too messy At class people pretty often ask me 'What does it say here?' 'Is this a k or a h?' kinda depressing -_-
Uploaded with ImageShack.us See for yourselfs... 2 things. 1. Its in spanish (i'm latin american, but my family is from england, so no worries ) 2. its flipped (cause i took it without a mirror u-u)
It looks, as my friends describe it, like grasshoppers humping ants. Really.
Yours Truly, The worst Caligrafer... sorry, James Lake
I can read my handwriting, but not many other people can. Although, I do regularly get complimented on how cool it looks because it's all cursive and such.
So, in appearance, above average if you just glance at a page full of my writing, but below average if you actually try to read it.
Mine is terrible, lol. My teachers kept begging me to improve it for the finals, so it was legible enough to read. Unfortunately for them, I decided to do this by handing in the rest of my essays for the year handwritten....and I don't think I made much improvement! :D
I have terrible penmanship. I remember my 7th grade science class teacher explaining to us why males on average had worse penmanship than females. He told us that when kids learn to write for the first time, the muscles in the wrists and hands are significantly more developed in females than males. So, if you are male and started kindergarten a year early, then you are more likely to have poor penmanship.
I have a "girly" writing. Once in high school I forgot to write my name on a paper when I got an 85 when the teacher wanted to hand them back, I claimed it as mine and she didn't believe me. -.- I didn't dare call her sexist!
If I took my time my hand writing would be at least average but I always write way to fast and it looks like my pen/pencil was in a fight with my hand and took it out on the paper.
My writing is god awful. When I was younger people would make fun of me for writing like a scrub. =< Amazingly SOME teachers can read it, but it's pretty damn bad.
I have awful handwriting, it has been made fun of by other students (all in light humor though). I think the reason for most tl'ers having worse handwriting, or thinking our handwriting is worse, is because it hasn't been forced as much as previous generations to us young guns . I think I have way above average WPM, at least compared to older people xD. So I guess it all works out :D
I clicked better than average on accident, my handwriting is absolutely unreadable to anyone but me (and even then I'm not at 100% success rate of knowing what my old notes say).
On September 06 2011 09:21 Hyren wrote: I swear my handwriting hasn't changed since 3rd grade.
^^ this.
Mine is awful, I've had papers given back to me because they weren't legible enough to grade -_- There are some days it takes me a few minutes to even understand stuff I wrote before, gg
My handwriting is so bad I avoid situation that require me to actually use my handwriting and I practice my signature 2-3 times on a blank sheet before signing something important lol
yeah, I'm having difficulty reading my own stuff nowadays.
I write in cursive, so I guess that's part of the problem. If I wrote in print, it's okay maybe--I think it looks like a first grader's, but it is more readable.
Every teacher I've ever had said I had bad handwriting, as well as TA's in university. The worst was my last year in high school, where my english teacher said I had worse handwriting than a guy who graduated 2 years ahead of me.
The other guy's handwriting was chicken scratch. It was literally only horizontal lines. He didn't even finish words it was so bad. the last 3 letters of any word longer than like 5 letters was just an amorphous line.
So, I guess when teachers say it's the worst they've ever seen, it's pretty bad.
A lot of people say my handwriting is very neat. Actually a lot of teachers have pointed out my handwriting in class and made me help them write their work for them. ><"
I don't think my handwriting is that good though, I see a lot of crooked lines. =x
I believe the current bias on handwriting is that women tend to have the more readable and neater handwriting. But I've had several girls tell me that they like my handwriting style compared to other males, and sometimes their own.
Self criticism says it's very violent and scratchy in nature. Very fast movements, sometimes separated by pauses and other times weaved together in completely unnecessary spots. For example, my T's will look like X's because I don't pick up my pen when I cross the T's stem. My E's (lower case) look like a theta symbol "θ". On top of these, as well as unmentioned scrutiny, letters will heavily vary throughout an entire essay. One D at the beginning will start looking like a 9 near the end.
The way I hold my utensils has also been pointed out several times. I make an upside down U-shape with my hand while I'm writing. Others say this form will hurt their wrists if they try to mimic it.
But I think it's my thinking process that makes it look favorable. A sentence or even half a sentence will materialize into my mind, I will scribble it down as fast as possible if it's a good idea, then sit there doing nothing until the next idea. The result is my papers look like they are fully thought out before written, then madly thrown down onto paper before the entire idea of the paper is forgotten. Brain capacity +1.
I used to have very good handwriting and then came high school where I needed to write at 4000 wpm in order to get all the notes the teachers put up and I seemed to have sacrificed all handwriting neatness above just average for speed.
My cursive handwriting isn't pretty but it's perfectly readable to anyone, my ß looks particularly terrible and I don't differentiate between upper and lower case Ks.
My handwriting is atrocious.. it's usually very hard for even me to read what i wrote. It's probably due to the fact that i write extremely fast and i don't really give a shit about writing anyway
I find it curious that so many sc2 players, with the dexterity and hand precision a game like SC2 requires, have sloppy handwriting. I do, too, incidentally.
Also, I'm no statistics major, but I think if 70% are below average, something's wrong with the metric...
For me, 'below average' is a euphemism for absolutely terrible to the point that I have to type all my work or at least write in print, and very slowly.
Also, I'm borderline for receiving medication for it (ADD medication, I think), but hate depending on meds.
My handwrite is barely readable most of the time. Only when I have to write something for someone, I try to make it very readable (maybe even draw the letters haha). Or when I find myself with a lot of time to write slowly and make it legible.
I can always read it... except for when I'm taking notes in class... uhh.. fail :/ Also, it has stayed the same since about 2nd grade. I just graduated from 8th grade last year and teachers were still both criticizing my hand writing, lowering grades for bad hand writing, and trying to get me to improve it by forcing good hand writing onto me. AKA what failed in the past is bound to work this time! Sure it's the 20th try of the same technique but... it could work...+ Show Spoiler +
...Not
Also lol@ the first reply being a guy wasting his 6000th post on criticizing his own handwriting xD. Most hilarious 6000th post yet :3
Above average, I get compliments all the time from people. I think I get it from my parents (specifically mom since hers is nicest), since they both have really neat handwriting.
mine's pretty horrible, but over the years it's at least become kind of standard, so while it's illegible, it's illegible in the same way every single time
I pretty much indent letters into the page so much that they can show up on a few pages forward(not the actual ink, just the pressure I put on each letter) and its pretty big writing, but its very legible.
Now when I had/have to take a lot of notes, I write with no regard to my neatness.
I can read my handwriting, but I am about the only one. I've never had good hand writing, however in my 8th grade computer class (10 years ago now) I had better WPM than my teacher.
In high school, I used to lose marks on test and papers because my teachers couldn't read my answers. Eventually I bought a printer and started typing my papers but still got boned on test since you can't do a test on a computer >.<
Used to be pretty good a long time ago, but after several years of typing instead of writing in almost every situation possible it's gotten a bit worse - maybe average/slightly below average.
And when taking personal notes it's terrible of course, no use for neatness there.
It depends on what I'm doing, how pressed for time I am, my mood, the pen, and other stuff. Ranges from fairly neat/above average to a sort of tentacled calamity given form in ink and bound to the page.
Where is the option: "totally abysmal"? My handwritting is actually kind of ugly but I'd say only somewhat below average. However, I know tons of people who have a handwritting that you could only decipher if you have a degree in cryptography. If I ever need to copy something for my engineering studies the only chance of getting legible papers is to ask one of the few girls amongst us, since the stuff of all guys seems like they've been writting it with their left foot while trying to juggle balls with their hands.
My "proper" handwriting is very neat and legible, some of my friends say it's "girl" handwriting.
Though on the other hand, when I'm furiously jotting down my thoughts, I don't even heed the lines on the page. No one else can read it... sometimes not even me .
People say I write like a type writer, I always type in all caps and small but very neat, almost OCD-like. I am always asked to write for them so that it will look good at work and such. Been writing the same way since like 4th grade.
Mine used to be horrible chicken scratch, but during my 2nd year of college I finally got sick of looking at it. I picked a cool semi-caligraphy style font out online and forced myself to copy it until I could write it proficiently. It took about 2 weeks to get decent and after about a month I couldn't write in my old handwriting anymore.
My handwriting is very neat. Everyone that's seen my handwriting says it's 100% readable and similar to Calibri text. I hold the pencil with all my fingertips/thumb touching just below the pencil tip which make writing really accurate but I haven't seen or known anyone who writes this way...wondering who taught me to write this way xD
On September 06 2011 11:43 Millitron wrote: The poll results are hilarious. Mathematically speaking, we can't have 70% below average!
If I made this into a survey and walked around town asking random people, I would probably get a lot of averages, and above averages when I get girls to vote.
TL.net is full of guys who spend more time typing than writing. What can you expect from a sample like this?
Asian schooled. I feel like my handwriting is grossly below average, but 'illegible' is not even close to description of the worst I have come across around these parts. I've got a feeling my standards are very different according to how most of the TL community whose posts I've read so far in this thread haha.
Definitely below average here. I have epic chicken-scratch. Always sucks when I have to fill in forms and stuff because it takes twice as long to write neatly.
On September 06 2011 12:52 Snet wrote: Working in healthcare my hand writing is naturally atrocious.
I still don't understand why most people involved in healthcare have their handwriting so terrible.
When a physician gives me a prescription I can't understand a thing. After I receive it I can decipher what it says only because he/she explained all the instructions while writing them.
Maybe it's because of all the weird long names they have to write while studying? I'm still curious about that...
But anyways, I find it funny when I forget what the doctor said and have to look it on the prescription even though I can't read it, haha.

I assume its probably because they can't spell most of the prescriptions correctly so they just cursive and scratch so that its not totally obvious that they can't spell. Try writing Haloperidol Decanoate off the top of your head tomorrow...
Really good. All those years of failing engineering classes and redoing the same problem over and over again, including drawings, really got my lines straight. It really cleaned up my form when I sign my name and stuff.
my handwriting is terrible, slow, and hurts my hand... I hate writing, why can't I just type for exams? I would be done in literally 20 minutes instead of 2 hours..
More than readable, but not pretty at all. And same with my Chinese handwriting. It's rare to write anything at length by hand anymore so practice is hard to come by.
My handwriting is so baller it oftentimes gets mistaken for a girl's (no sexism hate or anything like that here). I had a friend ask me to teach him how to write I was like wtf, hell no.
I think we can all thank the internet for the results of this poll. No one will be writing anything in 10 years! I would have to say I am average. It isn't nearly as bad as some of you make yours out to be.
On September 06 2011 09:29 hypercube wrote: Most of the time I can figure out what I wrote.
yeah, this.
Mine kinda sucks shit because I don't use handwriting at all. They made me learn it in grade 3 and in grade 6 told me I would use it all through highschool and I was like, "herpderp, you're dumb, I can type 80 wpm, bro."
So I'm okay with it being bad, but I would like to have a totally sick signature. Something completely illegible, but looks like you did it exactly right, you know?
My friends ask me if they can use my notes for classes because half the time they can't read their own. Plus I've had girls look over my shoulder when I'm writing and say - "Wow! That's beautiful! I wish I could write cursive like that!" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My writing is extremely messy, its a rare sight for other people to be able to read a complete sentence of mine, no exaggeration. Handwriting in particular I literally dont know how to do, I just basically write the words out and add little swirly lines to connect them, fraying off in arbitrary directions. Its a thinly veiled facade im afraid.
Can't really vote for this one, it much rather subjective. Some loved my unique handwriting and can read it perfectly while others don't really apperciate it and can't read it.
On September 06 2011 16:01 Valashu wrote: 68% below average? something is wrong here...
I find that most people have "bad" handwriting, so they naturally assume below average when the reality is average isn't very good, at least based on what I've seen.
I used to be told I had really neat and girly handwriting. I don't know why but now some people say they can't read my handwriting and it hasn't changed much imo. I still think it's above average, but I never did think it was that nice.
Well you have to remember like 98% of people here are guys and guys on average have worse hand writing than girls. I wouldnt be surprised if the average guy was below "the average" whereas the average girl was uh, above it. heh.
Guys generally have bad handwriting. Girls generally have good handwriting. I don't really see how it is possible for some people not to be able to read their own hand writing though, that just seems pathetically bad.
I actually was taught how to properly write letters (old and mordern styles). When I don't really care about it to be nice and want it fast, like in lectures, normally it's "average". But normally in daily when I write, it's reasonalbly nice :D Also I think I did write quite much more than normal when I was in middle/high-school
On September 06 2011 09:23 lyAsakura wrote: Really tiny, crammed together, and borderline illegible handwriting. Eh, whatever.
Same as this guy, if its for myself. If I'm writing back and forth with someone (hearing impaired) I basically take my time a little bit more, bigger and clearer.
I can't write reasonably fast and neat/legible at the same time. If I want my writing to be decent I really have to slow a lot. Picked below average of course.
Never touched a computer before I was 13 or 14 btw ;<
I can barely read my own sometimes, it's really bad but I can't seem to improve it very well and if I do try to I take up a LOT more time and it'll still look horrible :x. So ye definitly below average
My writing isn't pretty, but it is very neat. I write in print, I've never had someone say they couldn't read my handwriting and frequently receive comments on how legible it is.
That said, I wish it was sloppier, if making it sloppier meant I wrote faster. I could barely keep up when taking notes in school.
My handwriting is like offracing in starcraft. I can kinda throw something together that resembles something useful but regardless its never going to end well.
I think it's not nessecarily below average, but it is below what I would consider a nice looking handwriting. cba to invest the time to improve it though.
I used to have a really REALLY bad handwriting, but once I got to college and stuff started to matter, I tought myself a new handwriting which was slow and annoying at first but now it's pretty fast and everyone can read it.
My hand writing is horrendous. Good thing I am not in school anymore so I never have to write ever. I was always one of the very worst in all my classes when I was a kid, teenager and an adult. I have struggled to read my own hand writing. Could be why mechanics have always been why weakness in sc2 and bw.
I must admit its pretty bad. But when I take my time it comes out ok and everyone can read it. But I feel like that is cheating slowing down and making sure I write it neat lol.
People tell me that my handwriting resembles a girl's. Girls tell me they wish their handwriting as nice. I print; my cursive is atrocious. I have a background in art and painting though, so that is a major contribution to my printing form. Though, I have to say that during summers when I hardly have to write something, my handwriting form does diminish noticeably.
Horrible (my cursive at least), I have my own versions of like 9 letters which make it impossible for anyone but me to read, however I am extremely fast with it and I never have to look at the page I'm writing on when taking notes in lectures. My printing is almost as quick however and extremely legible.
PS (my signature is atrocious and always looks slightly different, my bank hates me for it.)

I've always been curious about this, especially considering we are all Starcraft players, meaning we are at least 98% males. This really means at least 70% of us if not much more of us actually have worse than average handwriting.
Mine's fine I guess. Not perfect (but I'm working on it) but it's readable and doesn't look half that bad. Also, I rarely make any errors. Using a regular pen (you know, the kind you need to fill with ink) helps a lot as you can't just scribble away with it.
i write worse then i did in the 4th class nearly no one can read what i write, but i still write in this "little boy" handwriting you learn in the first classes
Depending on how hard I'm trying I find mine pretty neat and readable, even tho my spacing could use some work. I love people that have a what I call classic-modern style (classic writing but kinda upgraded for stylishness, readability and writing speed would be the best way to describe it).
I was going to pick average for myself since I don't feel my writing is any special, but I know way too many people that have horrible writing (ugly and/or unreadable), so I figured I'm a solid above average
Even when I have to write super fast my hand writing is always pretty good, and I often get compliments from both men and women about how good my handwriting is, and a lot of questions if I'm an artist which I'm not.
Mine is pretty good. If I write a bit slower than college note-taking I write like a girl. I have a habit of connecting all my words even if they're technically unable to be connected, but I make some loops and it works out well.
I think my handwriting is sort of a hybrid cursive style...I like it =]
Mine's a fucking tragedy. I remember all through school teachers would always put that on reports, I was a model student until about 15 so they had to think of something even a little negative to put on there and it was always handwriting. Of course my parents focused in on that one negative like crazy and I spent endless hours sat practising handwriting at the kitchen table. Still didn't help.
I don't trust people with really neat handwriting...I can't help but think that they have minds like robots.
On September 06 2011 18:24 Thorakh wrote: People always think I'm a girl when they see my gorgeous handwriting. Are girls supposed to have better handwriting?
Not often you meet someone handwriting first anymore. I wouldn't be ashamed of having good writing it’s a good thing.
Also you really find out how bad you're handwriting is when you have to write on a chalk board in front of kids. "Don't talk to me trying to not make writing suck so so hard right now"
Really should spend some time working on my handwriting. It even bothers myself when i see it somewhere. Just don't know where to start. Maybe i just have to find my first class books somewhere and start all over.
Mine is aweful. My signature looks like it was done by some who just learned how to write. I wish I'd paid more attention in 4th grade when my teacher was giving her best trying to make me improve it. The sad thing is, I don't think it's necessarily below average, because I see a lot of other people have just as aweful handwritings.
It is truely horrible... Half the time i can't read it myself, especially if it is written fast. The ironic thing about it is if i have to write on black board in big letters and i can take my time i always get complimented.
I like to think myself as being above average. It's very readable no matter what speed I'm going for. Though my sisters handwriting is light years ahead of mine... It's not even funny, perfect every time-_-
I take care to write legibly otherwise what's the point of writing? (other than like signatures)
Also why the fuck do they teach cursive writing? You never use it past elementary school. And the weird people that still do(excluding teachers teaching it) you can't fucking read it anyways.
I usually get told once a week that I have a great signature, its really neat etc. however if I do fast hand writing it turns into something from the abyss lol others can read it but if you looked at my signature then hand writing most people think “what happened?” my signature is all I can write fast I can print really well though so I voted average
Myself and my teachers can read my handwriting np, my classmates/friends... well that's another story. Thankfully in this era we can take notes on our laptops at least
It looks like someone vomited on paper, let it dry, then traced the lines with ink. Everyone I know complains about it. On the other hand, everyone I know can read it no problem XD.
I have horrible handwriting but luckily i never have to use it anyways. It is definatly readable but letter sizes, distances, etc. change wildly even in the middle of a word. Thats the drawback of using PCs since more than 20 years.
Mines relatively good, many of my friends who borrowed notes from me told me that the notes were clean, well-organized, and legible. Too bad I'm not well-organized and clean when it comes to putting buildings down when I'm playing SCBW...
My handwriting is actually pretty bad. I wouldn't say it is illegible but it is close. However, most of the time where I even need to write something down, I never reread such as school notes. I've also written essays for school, etc. and so far none of my teachers complained about illegibility. Funny enough, my dad during my childhood, forced me to write the alpha bet over and over and over. This hasn't really helped me much.
I am capable of printing very neatly... I have no idea why... But I also have a pseudo writing printing combo that flows while I'm taking notes, which is much less neat. I get great satisfaction out of neatly written equations too. Integrated Laplace transforms and stuff can look messy but are actually quite beautiful if you have the foresight to scale everything correctly.
Everyone understands it, but I have fuckweird handwriting. Everyone tells me I pick up the pen or pencil or w/e wrong, or in a way they can't comprehend.

Now that is a provocation towards lefties like me and other people with a below average handwriting. I once got above average in handwriting in math. My teacher told me that it was very readeable despite the look of a 10 year olds handwriting. I've never heard that since. At "gymnasiet "(highschool/collage) and university, I've heard a few teachers/professors moaning about "If we had a readeability-score a few of you would not get grades for the science..." However, at university I have met people with worse handwriting and it doesn't matter at all as long as you can make yourself understandeable in writing.

There is nothing wrong with that handwriting, in fact its pretty neat. The spelling is a different matter
Seems people here have esteem issues related to their handwriting! 66% can't be below average can they?
On topic, mines average. I write quickly and its legible. If I were to slow down somewhat it would be better but its a tradeoff between utility and looks I guess.
I write most of my school work on my computer since I mostly do works related to film, photography and multimedia which also means that Im very happy since ever since I learned to write I´ve always heard I have a terrible hand writing, some times my teachers couldnt even read my essays in high school so I had to rewrite them.
My handwriting is so horrible I pity my teachers who have to read my work, especially when it's an essay test and rushing makes my writing even more illegible. Usually I type when I can.
My handwriting is has been called effeminate by some. I don't know what that means, but I have never met someone who has trouble reading my handwriting.
Pretty illegible actually. In 4th grade I got tired of writing with the crappy cursive script they were teaching, it always hurt my hand to write anything more than a line. So I made a simplified (mainly non-cursive, but it can get pretty connected sometimes) script based on a mix of printed and cursive letters, with the side effect that nobody else seems to be able to read it. No idea why, it is actually pretty straightforward, it's like reading some computer font.
It is just straight up illegible. Not a soul can read it but me. It's just a style I developed in early writing where I don't like to lift my pen, but I don't like to write cursive either. It looks like a scribble.
You guys made me lol. Bad handwriting? Wait to see mine. Every letter has a different size. KiNd Of If I wrtoe liKE tjkbfhs ("this simulates the not being able to read it" part).
But I did have to learn by myself after missing almost a year of school when I was a kid. So I just grabbed a pen and wrote that shit until I couldn't anymore. The problem is, the quality hasn't changed much since. I was 7 years old.
If you think about it, it is very strange that most people consider themselves with "below average" handwriting. You can conclude one of the two:
1. People on TL forums are very humble in relation to their handwriting. 2. People on TL forums have "below average" handwriting in relation to their non-TL peers.
Usually my high school class was like this...teacher hands outs papers then go "who's paper is this?" someone checks then goes "hmm i cant read it must be Danny!" then the teacher says" really? this is like sanskrit" followed by me deciphering words for teacher
Mines pretty bad in the sense that its different sizes, capitals mixed in, not in the lines, different angles, tappers off badly during an exam however, after saying all that I would say it's definitely readable (except for the stuff I write in the last ten minutes of the exam when my hands falling off! lol)
My pure cursive is horrible and should never be used in any test, but I developed a hybrid which is pretty readable, I only use it test though, cause it stresses my hand more
Above average. But then again, I seem to be one of the few people in the world who still believe that paper is better to keep records than electronic devices.
My junior and high school teachers were often surprised by how legible I wrote things, but it might have been had to do with the fact I am Asian. Still I like to believe my handwriting is at least that of average, excluding non-educated individuals.
if im rushing through it its legible but looks pretty shitty, when i write essays i tend to put effort in to make it nice to read my english teacher said its likely the examiner will enjoy marking your work if its presents itself well since they will have marked many poorly written essays that day
I have some of the most impressively bad handwriting, but it actually only comes out at certain times. Like when I'm taking notes, usually I can't even read it unless I clean it up immediately afterword. But if I'm doing math work it looks alot better than usual. (Probably just because I don't rush it.)
I have literally had bad handwriting since I learned how to write. I used to always get in trouble for going over/below the line even when just doing Aa Bb Cc Dd exercises. Now I'm 28, and I can't really say I've improved.
Side note, I'm not saying this isn't possible, but it's funny that 15% of people taking the poll say they're "average."
I have probably the worst handwriting out of anyone that I know. A lot of time I will write down some notes or something for class and go back and not understand a single word that I wrote. Doctor`s handwriting is stereotypically bad so since about 8 years old all my teachers have said I would make a great doctor.
On top of that even when I attempt to make my writing look good, which takes about 10 times longer to write something, it still doesn`t look the greatest and someone could EASILY write something with better handwriting than me in a fraction of the time.
EDIT: Also my computer engineering teacher says that bad handwriting is a sign of intelligence haha
Mine is legible, but doesn't look that great. I consider myself a good athlete and extremely coordinated, but writing is one thing that always bothers be because it doesn't look neat and nice. Same with my signature.
I think mine is pretty average, it's pretty readable but can get better. And i am surprised by how many people think their handwriting is bad :O Maybe we spend way too much time on computers seeing the perfect handwriting :O
I write very neatly, and very tiny. Can't count the times people have gone "how the hell do you write so small" to me. lol. Probably not good for the eyes to read though XD
This probably happens because I...like cramming as much into a single page as possible cause I don't like to waste paper. Messy writing is big, so I write neat, and tiny.
Its saying something when I can print (also tiny and neatly) faster than I can handwrite. So I usually stick to printing, cause I can print as fast as people handwrite in a tiny font, thought my hand does cramp up after a few minutes of extended writing
Atrocious and extremely unique. I have very swirly Y's and G's, my A's E's and O's all kind of blend in together. Any tall letter like b or d are enormous compared to short letter's. For my writing to even be legible I have to have to use a very dull round pencil. I write so light that last year in school I only sharpened my pencil about 6 times, that was only for when one broke. At the end of the year a pencil that I used all year had only lost about an inch of length. My writing is so unique that I never have to write my name on any hand written assignments. Interestingly enough any kind of math equation or number comes out crystal clear and is a picture of perfection.

If it's true that your handwriting tells something about your personality then I can imagine how someone who writes in all CAPS is like, jk.
My handwriting is quite bad. It's quite legible to everyone else, but it looks like a mad kid could not decide if it wants to write in cursive or italic so it's all messed up. It's quite big too which adds to that impression.
My letters often overlap, and if someone is going to read my stuff, they take their time. Needless to say, i'm not the greatest writer, but, compared to some of my friends it's not horrible either.
On September 06 2011 09:24 Detri wrote: Dip a spider in ink, let it walk over a page, *VOILA* my handwriting
Same but, dip a retarded spider who only has 3 legs, drop him an entire tab of acid then spin him around until he is really dizzy then throw him at the paper.....
Well its not that bad I guess, I am really surprised how the examination boards at my University(ies) have been able to read what I have written :/
I write REALLY ugly, I often have problems to even read it myself when I have to write fast at University. But I can't for the hell of it write with a laptop at University because I can't do lines and arrows fast enough to connect different thougts.
It really depends on what I'm actually writing. If they're notes for class, my handwriting is absolutely terrible since my professors have a habit of filling up the board in about 5 minutes then erasing random parts of it for more room -_-. On the other hand, if I'm writing a rough draft of a proof, for example, my handwriting looks pretty decent (since I may have to go up to my professor's office and ask him something regarding said proof).
Anything I turn in is typed up in LaTeX though, so my handwriting generally doesn't matter =P.

I've always been curious about this, especially considering we are all Starcraft players, meaning we are at least 98% males. This really means at least 70% of us if not much more of us actually have worse than average handwriting.
Fix that for you.
haha probably a fair assumption. I know very few male friends who write well, whereas most of my female friends / classmates write as if it was their proffession ^_^
No way in hell you're doing exclamation marks like that when you're writing for yourself. No way in hell. Especially if you're jotting down notes or so.
I can`t even print neatly. Especially when I am trying to write fast, I screw up letters and sometimes don`t even complete them properly. I write too small and I hold the pen/pencil too hard.
My handwriting is often titled as "Hieroglyphs, failrunes, toewriting"... I have kind of doctorish handwriting which even for me sometimes is tricky to read.
This poll is flawed. There cannot be more than half below average! Unless.. there's a connection between terrible handwriting and visiting Starcraft forums! :o
Being that I have written graffiti style lettering and the fact that I usually write things in all caps on paper, I have a pretty illegible style and legible style when I want to. Letters are art too and I've seen and tried to write letters in a million different ways so I think I'm above average in both reading and writing legibility.
My handwriting is unstable. I used to be left-handed but only for writing, hence they switched me to the right-hand when I was 7. I am capable of drawing nice letters but not of developing a consistent readable and pretty writing style.

There is also just the plain correlation of any internet based poll. The people have to have a computer, visit general forums and read threads and post (usually). There are a lot of SC players who don't forum, even really good players. So basically any poll on this website or any is not really a legitimate way to conduct the survey.
Ladies usually have much better handwriting than men. Mine is nowhere near the level of chicks but it's defiantly readable for everyone I'd say. Which for me is satisfying. :D
Terrible, only I can read my own writing without having to pause every few words to figure out the next. Infact, my writing is so bad that I stuggle when having to write/fill in formal documents and such (ie. loan, job applications, landing forms, tests, etc) that I usually have to ask for another copy as my first one was "Below Average".
My handwriting is so bad that I was given a typing device in High School (I have no idea what to call it, it was a keyboard with a tiny black and white LCD screen), but that proved to be more of a hassle than a benefit. I've been diagnosed with dysgraphia and I'm also left handed, which pretty much makes my writing look like one big smudge and scribbles.
I have hilariously (and notoriously) difficult to read cursive, ESPECIALLY when note taking. I can read what I wrote but other people can't. I feel so bad for the kids I TA who have to read my comments..
If I'd really wanted to I could get it neat but it requires a lot of concentration, time and effort and snail pace writing. It isn't practical to write neat for me when your just scribbling down lecture notes or when you only have 15 minutes left to finish writing an essay in an exam.
Girls in my opinion generally have neater handwriting than boys because in our formative school years whilst we are playing games on the computer girls have those glittery flamboyant colourful "secret diaries" where they write up all kinds of silly things like "which boy I like, who I hate, my dream wedding etc"
If anything give it a few years down the track and what you would consider "neat" handwriting today may only be legible to experts due to the advent of technology. Just like how it is really hard to read those old middle age English manuscripts (Think of those big heavy books that were written with a feather and ink). Although the pen and paper will still exist for a long time because of portability.
Oh and if you haven't already seen it Artosis' handwriting :D
TLDR: neat writing takes time, girls have neat writing coz of silly girly diaries, people in the future will have trouble reading our writing of today.
I've been told that I have girl's handwriting because its so neat and clean. Even my signature is like perfect because I can't stand doing it so no one can read it.
my writing is really neat but its really small and some of my teachers are like why did you write so small even though its legible though you might have to look closely to be able to read it but i can read mine fine though loll :D
I really hate my handwriting. Girls and teachers say it's not as messy and bad as other boys because it's easily readable, but I think it's really aesthetic.
A lot of people I know are overly critical of their own handwriting. E.g. they always apologise "sorry for my bad handwriting" when in actuality it's pretty good.
i'm kind of the opposite. i consider my handwriting normal and i can read it perfectly but most people struggle to read it
My handwriting is terribad.. but some days it feels just right and I can read everything I write, some days it's just horseshit and when I see what I wrote a few days later I don't know what it says. >.<!
But I guess that's how it is for most people in the IT business, you just write emails all the time and no paper anymore..
Mine is absolutely horrendous. Probably the worst out of anyone I know. I can try and make it understandable if it's supposed to be understandable to others, like an exam, but if it's just homework or something it becomes a complete mess that few can decipher. I can usually read it okay myself, though.
It often depends. But its more on the atrocious end of the spectrum, especially on bad days.
Typically its better at the beginning of the semester than at the end.
Sometimes different classes employ different note-taking techniques, so that influences "neatness" in handwriting
Heres a photo of two classes.. at polarizing ends of the class spectrum too. One is a graduate-level class, one is a 100-level class that i need for my last "general education" credits.
I like how below average is actually the average. :D (Blatantly taking it out of context). Anyways mine is atrocious, probably because I hold my pen in a very obscure way.
My handwriting is also average. No teacher at my school has really complained about it, although I think that it looks pretty bland. Then again, I constantly try to improve my handwriting, but there are limiting factors; one of which is that there isn't time to improve on it when there is so much work to do.
On September 07 2011 07:36 Wivyx wrote: This poll is flawed. There cannot be more than half below average! Unless.. there's a connection between terrible handwriting and visiting Starcraft forums! :o
I think this can be explained by the fact that girls generally have better handwriting
In my opinion, my handwriting is neater than a lot of the guys that I know, but definitely worse than a majority of the girls that I know. I write neater when I write smaller (perhaps less margin for error) and when I write big shit hits the fan.
I remember back in middle school I sought to make each letter as efficient as I could (for example, when I write a "d" after I have carried the vertical line to the top, I don't bring it back down to the baseline like I see most people do). This had led to some letters becoming sloppy, but over all these years think how much lead I've saved!
I used to write neatly at school but ever since it's gone to shit. It's not ineligible par se, it's just that before I used to take time writing each word whereas now it's just quick motions to go as quickly as possible, as long as it's 'readable' then that's ok for me.
