is there a reason judgement can be spelled either judgement or judgment? It makes my brain hurt thinking about this

Latin verb judico (iudico). Gallo-roman replaces [di] by a [d͡ʒ] sound (5th century ?). French invade England (11th century) and the word is borrowed. In English "judge", while in French the d falls off : "juge". Other germanic languages keep "Richter" (de) "rechter" (nl) to tell right from wrong rather than pass sentence.

Fast forward to the end of the 15th century, people start to print English texts. Spelling is not exact science and varies a lot. Add to it that the printers (German, Dutch) often don't speak the language, and you get ... a mess. Thing settle slowly and in late 17th century, first attempts are made to define a standard.

1582 - Mulcaster's Elementarie, states:
G, is allwaie strong befor a.o.u. whether single vowells or in diphtongs as, gaie, gant, god, good, gout, gut, gulling. Likewise before r, or l, as grave, grant, glance, glew. And in the end of anie syllab, where the qualifying e followeth not, as in long, tung, onelesse the qualifying e, be left out, for som addition, which beginneth of a vowell, as,range, ranging, swinge, swinging, for in that place g, is weak. As it is also and allwaie before the qualifying e, as cage, huge, drudge, snudge, hedge, dodge. It is somtime strong, somtime weak before i, and e, contrarie to the latin, where it is allwaie weak before the same vowells, tho not contrarie to the Greke and Hebrew. This varietie of force before these two letters semeth to give som matter to confusion in our writing. For as it is weak in these, gentle, ginger, gin, germain, and such: so is it strong in these,
geld, gesse, gilt, begin, gang and such, and therefor no marvell if we write, college of collegium, and college of
collega, with the same letters, seing our g is capable of both the forces before the same e. This necessarie distinction hereof shall appear in the title of distinction. But why put an u, after the strong g, in som places, as in guise, guide, guest, beguile, and not write them all without the u, and with the g onelie, as girde, girth, girdle, getting? And why maie not these words be writen, gise, gest, gide, begile, as well as begin, beget, seing both our g, is strong before these vowells, and the difference noted, and g, with the u after is of another propertie in language, guise, Guichiardine, Guin, guerdon ? I se no cause why, but that the u, maie well enough be left out.

Two different schools of thought : on one side, spelling rules should be laid out and any existing spelling should be refined to match the rules. Needs a lot of rules and a common pronunciation, but does not need to define each word separately. On the other side, whatever is the most common spelling at the time should be kept as a reference. Let both argue, and you end up with :
- Rule : g si pronounced [g] except when followed by e or i when it can be [j], so you need judgement because the g is pronounced [j] in that case.
- Dictionary defining spelling for all words with a "JUDG'MENT" in Websters first edition (1828)

That's quite the specific question. I doubt you'll find a satisfactory answer here, though there might be academic papers that have approached this question.

As there are many people here, with diverse hobbies, i was wondering if some of you TL guys know about a website who analyses lovecraft, on how his horror works, what words and the way they are used to create fear - or to talk about it together, like how people talk and analyse build orders and strategies. >.>

My stupid question is...which part of TL forum would be the appropriate place to ask this question? <.<

This would be a good place to start to ask, not as active as it used to be:

Do software repository development companies use their own repositories when developing the repository? How would the changes be managed?

What on earth do you mean? I don't think you really understand your own question as you're mixing up quite a few concepts. So lets go.

A software repository development company. With this I presume you mean github, bitbucket and the like? They don't actually develop much beyond a front end, a community and a set of tools to connect to git (or svn in some cases). Git is open source (as is SVN, and CVS before that), and is software that provides version control and a set of tools for collaborative development. Github, Gitlab, Bitbucket, Sourceforge, etc. provide a service on top of that. But you don't need Github to use git. All you need is a central server that can serve as your git origin. Presumably however, the github developers do like the front end and tools they develop for collaborative development, and use them themselves. But who really knows?

Now, on to how modern web development works. Because that's what github is: a web app for git. What you see is the deployed, stable version of github (or the buggy broken version if you use gitlab, but it's supposed to be stable ). I have no idea how github handles deployment, but they might use git to pull a stable release to their production servers. Most of the time, this will go without a hitch or any downtime, and when you refresh the page, it will be a new version with critical bugfixes, or even new features. Major reworks might require downtime (for instance, if there's changes in the database) to deploy correctly.

However, that isn't what the developers work on. The developers have a completely "parallel" architecture (usually many different parallel architectures: one each for local development, and a few for QA), where they develop new features, fix bugs and do other development tasks. Some of these will be deployed quickly (for instance, security patches), while others might never be deployed at all (a feature that QA decided was just too confusing or difficult or marketing decided to scrap). If the developers use the deployed version of their VC platform to manage their software, then they will get the changes at the same time as everybody else. More likely is that they have an in-house version which serves something like a closed beta: it's stable enough to use, but not stable enough to push out to customers, and errors provide valuable information on what still needs to be fixed in order to make it stable enough for customers!

Is it alcoholism to drink when sad, or is it alcoholism to drink too much alcohol?

Alcoholism is when alcohol starts to have a net negative impact your life.

So if you're sad and drinking makes you happy, and you stay happy, then no, I don't think you're an alcholic. If it exuberates your sadness afterwards and hinders your way of getting out of your rut, then you're an alcoholic.

Are you drinking too much and questioning your life right now?

I just moved in in Germany (Munich), and I have a very bad internet (4kb/s, and a lot of loss).
Is there a quick fix so I can watch the WCS finals this week end at at least 360p?

-Using my phone won't be possible because of my very low data limitation.
-There is no unlocked wifi I could ninja around here.

Local Library might be an option.
Restaurants/bars might be another option, esp the ones that cater to businessmen.

There is free state WLan in Munich in a lot of places. I don't know all the places, but at university, you can get into the internet for free using that.

The final starting at midnight here, public places would be tricky even though some stay open through 2am or such. However the wlan-bayer look excellent. I have 'outdoor' hotspots not too far from my place, so if need be I'll give them a try, thanks for the info. Also it may be useful in the future anyway!
Thanks for the help.

Is it possible to build a feedback mechanism that can balance two completely independent inverted pendulums on a single surface?

If so, what would the limit of independent inverted pendulums that can be balanced by one feedback loop be?

This video here got me thinking: https://recordsetter.com/world-record/balancing-two-poles-head/36029?autoplay=false

My head says if the perturbations are small, and they all have different inertias, infinitely many should be able to be balanced, but no real way to prove it.
