Urrrrgh… assignment for university is due to today 23:59, had a ton of exams this week also. Teams of 2. Topic was an algorithm which we I improved. Did most of the work under the semester bit since the requirements for the paper where not clear until this week I couldn’t do the final write earlier. Also I had a ton of exams this week the last one is on Tuesday. Somehow I managed to carve out the time for my part, almost 9 pages. The other guy doesn’t take the exam on Tuesday so his last exam was Friday. I made sure that my work was finished until then and send it to him with a detailed description on what was missing, we also had talked multiple times about what has to be done and who does what. Since I was doing the experimental and thesis stuff, his object was to write down the research stuff/the stuff we pretended too having researched. Easy work, just a short rundown on a few current algorithm with a short explanation why we chose this one, as well as the final conclusion. He would also do the final formatting, which would be rather easy though as we use Latex and pasting my stuff into the final paper is just that in latex. You paste it in with the according tags and it fits.

Saturday I get back his work. Suddenly, we have 8 pages. He added a bare minimum and also cut out some essential stuff. What he had done was pretty bad and it was clear that very little effort had gone into it. To top that, his changes to my stuff made it objectively worse. Previously my part looked really solid, but his changes made it almost look as bad as his stuff. I send him a long and detailed list on what was wrong and that he should keep my stuff untouched in terms of content and general structure. I also stayed polite and objective, even though I had to mention that yes, we do fucking need sources. It’s a scientific assignment for fucks sake! Citation needed bro. I also told him that I won’t be available for most of the day and almost begged him to please to a good job.
Now I am sitting here and writing this rant because the paper only slightly improved. We are at 10 page now as my whole stuff is back in, yet his part is still extremely lacklustre and there is just too much wrong with it to fix it so I feel paralyzed as I don’t know where to start. I added some sources but beside that, just by fast reading you recognize the huge difference in quality. His last message was something along the lines “Here is my final approach, if you want to change something you can to it until we have to hand it in.” at 9PM.
There aren’t much credit points involved, yet I feel disappointed. First of all, the work I done for this is not world-shaking, but after having multiple people checking it out I am sure that it is quite solid and would have impressed my professor in terms of quality. Especially since all other groups went for boring reviews/evaluations.
Which disappoints me the most though is that I did all this work before and also found the time to do the paperwork this week despite all my exams. I had more exams then he did this week and I have another next week which I still study for. He had 2.5 days where he had nothing to do but this, yet he clearly spend less time on his whole part then I did this week alone while going through this exam-nightmare. We worked together this whole semester in every mutual lecture and it went well, so I shouldn’t be too harsh with him. He worked very well in one of the courses and saved me a lot of time that way but still.
I am not mad, I am just really disappointed. I suppose he will write me at some point this evening, asking if I want anything to change. It won’t matter, but I will tell him how disappointed I am in him and his work, how it is just unacceptable that I put much more effort into this while having much more going on. We also have to do a presentation in 10 days or so and I really don’t want to… I feel ashamed having my name on this thing. I don’t know how I should justify this poor work to my professor. It should be enough to pass but that’s pretty much it. It had the potential to be amazing and instead it turned out to be shit and to make it worse, it turned out to be shit because someone was too lazy to do the easy part properly.
