and you're embarassed? fuck that, watching a riot caused purely by the loss of a hockey games gets me going all patriotic. nowhere else in the world is the greatest sport ever appreciated so much.
We'll see in the morning if they ACTUALLY riot, cuz right now I would call this a bit of a rollover on the part of the fans.
Edit: it appears they have begun to actually riot, so:
This is how it works: Every Canadian dreams of raising the stanley cup from the moment he can think for himself. When 99% of them realize that they aren't good enough to play any more, it becomes their dream to watch their team raise the cup, and for Vancouver, a team that has been around for 40 years without ever having won it, and now they not only had a chance, but they were expected to win. Most of these fans rioting have been cheering and carrying the colours for 15-20 years now, through all the trials and trebulation, and now it seemed to them that they would finally achieve it, until tonight. If you had been dreaming of something for 20 years, and then had it promised to you, only to have it ripped from your fingers at the last possible second, would you riot? I fucking would.
And @ people in this thread, man up. Seriously. This is Canada, and we go through hockey riots every year at this time, whether its montreal, vancouver, edmonton, or montreal (did i mention montreal?). Why is anybody even surprised about this? I thought we had come to expect this, and we've definitely learned how to handle it. Just stop being a bunch of pussies.
Edit 2: Okay the riots basically over. i give it a 4/10
I find things like this disgusting, I'm all for rooting for you favorite team. Whether that is in football, soccer, baseball, hockey, or fucking tennis, but to riot cause millions of dollars in damages, and basically be a bunch of complete idiots is un-called for. I don't give a shit what race, country, or religion you belong to, you should be so selfish and idiotic.
These things are on all levels wrong, and to tell people to stop being pussies is so ridiculously immature of you. The only people who are being total pussies are the people rioting because they are upset that there team lost, it's just hard for me to fathom this kind of stupidity. And I live in the United States, where this shit happens all the dumbass time.

Living in Boston and the revelers in the street are pretty crazy too. Good to hear. Love knowing there are US fans that can be passionate about hockey
(That comment has nothing to do with Vancouver's current state.)

(I'm joking lol, never been to a football game in my life and it hasn't really been bad in this country since the 80's, places like Poland and Russia though? crazy shit does down)

Apparently Twitter is on fire with news of a Boston fan being killed (they're undecided as to whether he was stabbed or pushed off an overpass). Has anyone heard anything?

Please don't start with all this 'Americans are ignorant, redneck, idiots' crap. In the same way that I don't say that Canadians are mindless, violent, rioters just because of these riots in Vancouver, you can't label Americans based on a few posts. I'm 99% sure those aren't even hockey fans, they probably just came in here when they saw it in the sidebar and decided they would try to boost their post count. It could just as easily been Canadians making those posts.

Last I heard CTV was backing down from earlier claims that there was a death. As of now there's no confirmed fatalities. (I think.)

On CTV they just said that a man was stabbed and they showed him going off in a stretcher with his thumb in the air.

Please read what I wrote then go over the useless posts, and then look at your post and see how you are justifying my "thread-centric" stereotypical comment.

This footage is insane, the cameraman from CTV just walking among the crowd.
|
These rioters are just drunk: band-wagoners , douche bags , gangster wannabes, or actual thugs. Not a good sample of Canadians or Vancouvrites =/. Too bad stupidity is imba and global(twitter). We're getting bad rep because we have stupid people in our city and stupid people are just .... well stupid.

The CTV stream is amazing, some of the police are fully decked out; dogs and everything.
|
Looks like Oakland after EVERY RAIDERS GAME.

God damn dude, soccer fans take this shit so seriously, yet I never understood why.
Same with those crazy ass baseball fans that beat people into coma.
If there is an answer, would someone care to share?

I have huge respect for the journalist and cameraman (I'm not sure which station I was watching, CBC maybe) just walking around outside the bay with a single security guard while shit's on fire all around them.

i don't think it's that bad personally.
it's emotional when you lose a stanley cup as a favorite, even more so when you lose in game 7. people are freaking out over the tarnishing of the image of a canadian, but i could care less. we riot over sports, not over homosexuals or terrorists . they're just stupid people doing stupid shit. i feel bad for property owners and people getting hurt.
i could care less about bad rep. any rep is good rep yo. if we won the stanley cup parades would have been fucking a-mazing. we lose riots happen, we win we'll party for the next 2 months. it's vancouvah babee.

Damn, I'm truly embarrassed to live in Vancouver right now. What a disgrace to our city. And to the Boston fan who possibly died, RIP. I'm sorry. ='(

Wow that's fairly ridiculous.
I just logged on battle.net and some guy one gas four gated me. He said he was angry about the riots in Vancouver. So I hopped on here and the guy does have justification o.o

I don't have a real answer, because I don't understand it myself. But a few insights: 1. People really love their sports (myself included). People love to get behind their cities and their teams. 2. People get drunk 3. With the bigger riots there is probably a certain degree of safety felt because of anonymity (in that there are so many people they will not be singled out), the same way people are complete assholes on the internet because they know that they will not suffer any real world consequences. 4. Some people are idiots to start with. 5. Some people are really just looking for trouble and use the guise of a sports team to start it 6. Some people think it's fun to cause destruction and live on the edge and fuck with the police- basically its all just a way to have fun for them

Yeah good points. There was lines outside of Sports Bars at 9 AM for this game so there was definately a ton of drinking. Liquior stores did close early in Vancouver, and many businesses boarded up their windows prior as well.
Others think hey it's a chance to do whatever i want and get away with it.... I've seen a lot of vigilante type people too though. When those 2 police cars were getting flipped a young man was on the ground pulling people off the cars who were jumping on them. And the man who lit the cars on fire was jumped by the crowd.
