At first it was very calm, but it started to pick up quickly. Store windows have been broken into and people are looting now, right in front of TV cameras, and more cars are getting flipped and burned as other people cheer.
Sounds like the G20/G8 riots in Toronto last year. At least those were politically motivated. Rioting over the NHL is seriously so stupid. This isn't some sort of "national rivalry" of some sort.

Why would Montreal have it worse? Vancouver's quite populated and the game was being played there. Tons of people just gathered in the streets to watch the giant TV's streaming the game.

At this point it has nothing to do with the game, sports, or hockey. It is just a bunch of morons.

its not really the hockey fans doing all this. its mostly the drunk 20 year olds using it as an excuse to riot

Canadian sports 'riots' are usually rather tame, yes some stuff (cars, garbage bins) gets set on fire, and mostly liquior store are smashed and grabbed
but actually serious injuries are rare, this isn't a violent event in the same context as other pats of the world would view it.
If one person died (as per comment above) that would be literally one of the deadlest sport riots in canaidan history
|
People were in the bars at 9 in the morning lined up they were drunk idiots doing it. And trouble makers
|
This is humiliating beyond belief, trust me when I tell you that these idiots do not represent Canuck fans as a majority. It is a shame

did anyone die in the 94 riot in vancouver?

Been watching this. So far: Fights? Check. Looting? Check. Fires? Check. Destroyed cars and property? Check. Someone trying to jump over a burning car, falling into the fire, then running off with hands thrust in the air in triumph? Check.

As I said in the NHL thread:
don't understand why all these kids think it is some kind of huge party.
"I am distugested." "This is pathetic!" "A bunch of thugs!"
...why the hell would you stick around and give these guys a soapbox to stand on? Not only that but you are fueling their confidence and making it harder for the police to do anything to help the situation.
Honestly, at this point the police gave warnings that being in the riot zone could get you arrested/tear gassed/whatever via loud speakers hours ago, would anyone really casre if the police stareted to step it up? This shit is embaressing.

Kojak I believe 3 people died in 94 if I'm not mistaken
|
Been listening to a feed of Vancouver Fire/EMS radio scanner. There have been a ton of fires, a lot of them got worse than they needed to be because the areas were considered "hostile" and Fire was being told to stand down and stay at a safe distance by the Police. Things are being taken care of now, but it's sounding like they're stretched a bit thin. Heard one engine ended up out of water.
Edit: VLC Link for those that want to listen in too: http://ltr.tac9.ca:8000/ecommvancouver.m3u

This is fucking retarded, these arnt real fans they are the fucking posers that use sporting events to get away with shit like this.
The real fans are proud at how our team has progressed, and yes it is disappointing but only the degenerates are actually lashing out.

I can't emphasize this enough. I'm completely heartbroken by the loss, but I would never, ever condone behavior like this. Embarrassing doesn't even begin to describe it
|
Just a bunch of drunken hockey fans out to cause some trouble about a loss. It doesn't seem very massive but it shouldn't have come to this.
|
I feel like some of these people don't understand the shenanigans they are causing. They are hurting the image of Canuck fans, Vancouver as a city, and Canada as a whole. It is embarrassing.
TO think if this happened like two years ago the Olympics probably would have skipped Vancouver entirely...
Worse yet, imagine if Canada had lost to the US in the gold medal game and this shit happened. I am so glad we won.
-.-

Riot at Anaheim if a non-American wins MLG, let's do it SC2 Community! We'll show them we're hardcore!
I would love nothing more than to watch a bunch of basement dwellers get wrecked by Cali's own anti-riot squads

This is just embarrassing.

I sincerely hope that this is just media overreaction.

I completely agree with this. When people start burning cars and smashing windows it is time for everyone to leave.
Everyone is saying that it is a small group of people causing the problems and everyone else is just watching. If you are staying to watch you are part of the problem. Just get out and let the police handle the situation.
