..what are the best instrumental songs in your opinion?

some of my favorites are:

necro - circle of tyrants (lots of necro instrumentals are godly )
mobb deep - shock ones pt. 2

the songs i posted are rap beats but i also talk about instrumentals in general!

I got this drum solo "Moby Dick'' by John Bonham from Led Zepplin. Theres like 30 seconds of guitar at the start, and again at the end, and rest is one of the greatest drum solo's of all time.

Metallica wasn't playing during that song, it was all the San Fran symphony orchestra.

ok ... then let me specify - rap is a style of music and singing, but most likely a rap songs has a beat ... to be perfectly exact i mean the beats, what is still the same as the instrumentals of a rap song tho -.-

@drone ... well not everyone can have a good music taste :> - j/k ... some yrs ago i hated anything that was called hiphop/rap

Great topic, I wonder why it hasn't been done yet. I LOVE instrumental music.

I'm blacking out right now though, the only song I can think of is Sting of the bumblebee by Manowar. I'm probably gonna download some of the suggestions in this thread once I get home from work.

Oh oh, I just remembered. "Concerto" by Jason Becker (I think it's a band but I can't remember their name, I know he's in the band though) great fast paced guitar.

An instrumental is a song without vocals right?..

There are a couple good but short NIN piano instrumentals..

and Mellencollie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins is a nice piano song

Metallica - Call of the Ktulu
Nightwish - Moondance (and crimson tide / deep blue see, altough it's not really their song)

I don't really listen to a lot of instrumental songs/music so I can't really give a good selection (definitaly gonna download some songs mentioned here though )

Edit: and some songs by apocalyptica, no specific one

yes godspeed rules, explosions in the sky is great too.

if you like godspeed be sure to check out some of their side-projects: a silver mt. zion, set fire to flames, fly pan am, and my absolute favorite that i can't recommend highly enough, Hangedup. Hangedup is just one guy who plays the viola and one guy who plays the drums, both godspeed members. it's fucking amazing, totally incredible. it makes you wonder why viola music isn't more popular, goes so well with the drum building to crescendos like godspeed does.

Whats the instrumental song that Shadows Fall does? I can't remember the name....something like Thoughts without words.

And what was the song off the NIN CD, The Fragile (left

If I could remember the names, those would be my choices.....along with the Metallica songs mentioned and Van Halens - Eruption.

Symphony X - The Odyssey

"The Odyssey" is very good, but not an instrumental. My favourite instrumental by Symphony X is "On The Breath Of Poseidon".

when it comes to instrumentals I think Floyd is king.
Is it fair to consider The Great Gig in the Sky an instrumental? There's no words, only shouting-style singing.
Also One of these Days is a fucking awesome instrumental.
By the way, my name is Funk. I am not of your world

King Crimson - Red
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Neu! - Hallogallo
Joe Satriani - Flying in A Blue Dream
Cluster - Sowiesoso

Quite ironic, it's always the ones with bad taste and no understanding of music, who are the first to scream out what owns all.

John Frusciante - Murderers

Ennio Morricone - The Ecstacy Of Gold (the only good one, from the movie: the good the bad and the ugly)
Metallica - Call Of The Ktulu
Iron Maiden - Ides Of March (Short, but soooooo sweet)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Pretty Little Ditty (Also short but sweet.)
Iron Maiden - Transylvania
Metallica - To Live Is To Die

Oh and you will all LOVE that requiem for a dream movie soundtrack, it's awesome: Lux Aeterna (I think that's how it's called.

Woa almost forgot some great ones:

Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In The West
The Lonely Shepherd (Kill bill soundtrack)

stop saying orion, here's how it breaks down:

boring riff
boring riff with guitar solo on it
crappy transition to another boring riff
other boring riff with another boring solo on it
crappy ending

if there was a large amount of musical talent displayed i would be willing to call it a matter of taste, but there is nothing special about it musically, metallica has done many other much better guitar solos and song in general.
goliaths are awesome because they kill evil carriers - yay i have internet at my home now ^_^

Very nice picks. I knew all of them except for Embryonic Jouney. Albatross is really a work of genius.

A couple more:
Moby - Everloving
Mannfred Man's Earth Band - Saturn, Lord of the Ring / Mercury, the Winged Messenger
Santana - Samba Pa Ti
Deeply earnest and thoughtful people stand on shaky footing with the public - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
