SVT, swedish television has started a new program airing on the internet
here completely dedicated to e-sports, the first show
covering the rise of e-sports, South Korea and Jinro

There will be 8 episodes leading up to Dreamhack Summer which SVT also will cover.

They'll be airing 4 documentaries focused on gaming as well. Looking forward to that actually, SVT documentaries are fairly good quality.

Just saw this when I went to their website: THIS IS HUGE!

So great to see e-sport take the big step into mainstream media and culture. Watched the first episode, it covers e-sport history and what is is/how it's played today - a really good episode I must say.

cool, I'm halfway through. Searched for a thread on here but alas, there was none. "what a golden opportunity to "brag" about how e-sport is flourishing in sweden" I thought ;P

Shame there aren't any optional subtitles so us non-swedes can tune in. Still watching it though, and the production looks awesome.

Unfortunately not. This is Swedish national TV (the biggest media channel that is played for by everyone owning a TV in Sweden) so they aim to produce content for people living in Sweden.

Sounds interesting. SVT should be great when it comes to the documentary part. Not so sure about the E-sports coverage judging from my previous experiance with their "staff" when theyve streamed from dreamhack etc. I hope theyve hired some guys that actually know something about e-sport this time. There is no point in making a program if the narrator/commentator isnt updated.

lol, maybe if you guys harass with emails they'll put in english subs If it was my show i'd just be happy because of the interest. If it doesn't work just tell them that all swedish citizens can't speak swedish, it's public service after all

I know that i've seen a button for subtitles on other SVTvideos, probably for people with bad hearing so their player is capable.

The streaming from Dreamhack was by aftonbladet which is Swedens biggest newspaper. SVT is the national television channel and is funded by tax money.

Pretty sweet, although knowing SVT and how they work, they will most likely take a analytical and educational approach on the e-sport phenomenon for the "average joe". In other words it's a series of documentaries showcasing what "them crazy young people are up to these days" and not so much Starcraft 2.

The first episode wasn't all that bad, I didn't feel like they dumbed it down as the usual case is and the host is employed by dreamhack and was conferencier at the swedish video game gala, I think/hope he's "in the loop"

I meant SVT. Didnt watch the aftonbladet stream so I cant say anything about it. SVT has been streaming dreamhack for 2 or 3 years. Cant remember the name of the host but I think he had some connection to rakaka. Not positive tho.

I believe the dreamhack invitational was, like you said, streamed by aftonbladet but I'm pretty sure SVT streamed from dreamhack winter so he's correct

I don't know how it will continue on, I mean today was kind of a look at how e-sport started, like way back and a short summary of what is happening now with the sc2 boom. After these 8 what will they do I hope it pretty soon warps into something more like the sport news, that'd be awesome!

I particulary love how they set the cathegory of the show to sport, rather than entertainment were gaming related content normaly end up.

Love that detail.
Otherwise I thought it looked quite promising.

Why dont you mail svt and ask if theyre ok with it ? If theyre producing it themselves they should own all the rights. Theyre non-profit and payed for by tax money so I dont see why there would be any problem.

To help with any subbing initiatives people would want to undertake. I will qoute a post I made which I think is very empowering for those looking to contribute or set something up.

I have just finished watching Boxer's Wing Ep 2 in Chinese subtitles and it was as awesome as first (despite last 2 minutes of the video was corrupted...)

I'm wondering how's the English translation team doing? If progress are still far from complete, I am happy to do a transcript of Chinese to English translation. I'm no good with video manipulation so it'll just be a text file with time stamps and rough translations in English... would anyone be interested by it?? I'll do it if there's demands for it.

If you have access to the Chinese subtitles or the transcript what I've seen sub groups do is they take the Chinese subtitles in that form. I think they take Chinese because it get's translated faster there, more people active in subbing or something? Could by any language I guess, and then they run it through a software translator that will do the bulk of the translations. Think you can use an online translator if you can input the text nicely. I've never done it so I'm just speculating on the actual method.

What you get after translating it through software still has all the timings hopefully, if that didn't get messed up with the software translation and then it becomes "easy" to share it with people who can each take a part of say 5 - 10 minutes, depending on if you are able to split and combine the workload in such small fragments efficiently, and they can easily "fix" the terrible software translations like: "Micro good show very Boxer, legend he be" to "Boxer shows good micro, he is a legend."

And then the final stage of quality control has a person comfortable with the korean language watch the fixed software subtitles and can apply final adjust in context that have gotten lost in translation: "Here Boxer shows us crazy sick micro skills, he is a real legend after all." To something like that.

The method discribed above is taken from darksmurfsubs, who I think "invented" the method, and where he made an online "Web Subtitle Editor". Its main use is for allowing anyone to contribute and edit lines of the translation in a similar fashion to how the wikipedia system works.
An "admin" or someone with privileges can then "lock" changes in or choose user made changes who you should see more as "suggestions" since they aren't final otherwise one could easily sabotage all the work.

An example of what the Web Editor looks like (Large picture):
+ Show Spoiler +

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/9804/overviewwwwwldtrzzm.jpg

Or at:
http://www.darksmurfsub.com/public/subtitle_list.php?tid=QS.Crime.Squad.2011
Somewhere.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that with translations, if you have 3 people translate you get 3 different translations. Some groups sub in more of a telegram style, some leave out tiny popups on screen the production put in like two people are talking and one person looks confused, they put "He looks confused" on it, others try and do it really methodical at the expense of time.
What I'm trying to say with this last paragraph is that it really doesn't matter that much if the translation is perfect and I think you can come a really long way with implementing a system like discribed above, if anything it appears to be an efficient way to sub and as we all know, it takes a lot of time.

I'm not sure anymore why I wrote this but I'm not gonna delete it. Time for some coffee, Enjoy
[TL Subs] fighting! :D

I'm not exactly sure how it should work in this case, but I feel the method has been proven worthy and highly effective even without the system of the site linked. But it could be an option to check with the Darksmurf guy to see if we can make use of it for this purpose, or something.
Hope this can help in anyway if there is enough desire to undertake something like that. So that we can watch these awesome movies and know what it going on

Also, I felt that during the DH Invitational, many people translated the interviews, I just thought it would've been super cool if someone actually timed them to the videos. I couldn't get the video embed from the page but if I did it probably wouldve played around a little and tried to put someones translations on. Depending on how far you take it, if you settle for the minimum roughness it shouldn't take the most time, if you sub every little thing, color it, time it to the frames perfectly etc it will so, it doesn't have to be a huge chore.

To add to this, should anyone make the effort of writing up a translation, please include the times at which people say things and something like : to indicate lines and what not. I'm not exactly sure how it works but there are a few ways of formatting it so that it can be imported very easily and almost instantly is pretty decently timed. Makes it a lot easier and more doable to adjust the lines rather then figuring out what is being said when and doing each line individually. Also for those who cannot understand swedish, the time will be a good enough indication to tell when a line should appear.

To finish, I noticed I missed out a link to a crucial step, the actual timing. I think the most used program for this is Aegisub. It's not that difficult and has a ton of amazing features. For example for timing lines, you have multiple hotkeys so you can micro start and end points in rapid succession, as well as a audio segment, like a heartrate monitor? with waves and peaks of audio? and that helps insanely well because you can literally see the audio and thus get a much better feel for where you want the line to be visible on screen.
http://www.aegisub.org/

It's a bit of a wall of text but I really hope some of it can be put to good use. I feel that is the case and I would like to wish everyone best of luck, here's to a succesful endavour.

Edit: it's probably worthy to note that for the Boxer's Wings Episode 2 they used google documents to allow anyone to contribute. I'm not sure exactly how it was setup but it did provide some security against vandalism by being able to roll back or having a lot of saves or something. And I believe you can also set up priviliges there for established contributors etc.

i remember there being some show on SVT like 5+ years back that covered weekly counter strike results and such, and while its cool that its on tv, its not really something new.
No reason to complain though, cool that they are trying to make it mainstream, hope they can bring high quality shows.

great documentary by svt. No dumbing down or talking down esports or computer gaming in general. Had quite alot of known faces as well and the host was good. Too bad it isnt in english but someone will probably put up subs or something eventually.

Really looking forward to future episodes.

Or at:
http://www.darksmurfsub.com/public/subtitle_list.php?tid=QS.Crime.Squad.2011

Thanks for the info. I might look into this a bit more closely after the weekend. Not sure if it is worth subbing entire episodes though. The only really interesting part in ep1 is the Jinro interview which is him talking about his life-long dream about playing in S.Korea. Perhaps just transcribing the sc2 part would be sufficient.

Judging from the sneak peak of the next episode it won't be starcraft related .

The streaming from Dreamhack was by aftonbladet which is Swedens biggest newspaper. SVT is the national television channel and is funded by tax money.

It's not funded through taxes, it's funded through the TV- and radio license which everyone who owns a TV or radio needs to pay, and is payed to a foundation with only partial government influence (a minority post in the board). A very important distinction!

Looks like sweden are doing it right this time with known faces, i remember aftonbladet(swedens biggest newsite) once, there was this 13year old kid who had wrote in and lied about him being the best player in the world in counter-strike and winning tournaments so they made an article with him with interviews and everything, everyone was like whaaat? best troll ever

i thought it was funny

I dunno if they'll respond to it, but I sent in an email to SVT telling them about all you non-swedes wanting english subtitles on the show. Worth a shot at least.

Think this a great thing though, and I was wondering when those interviews where going to be broadcasted! x) (was at the DH invitational and saw glimpses of SVT-crews interviewing players)

If it would be possible to get a swedish transcript of this without having to go through the whole thing pausing/unpausing to write it down I could start translating some of it. I bet we could get alot of swedes who are fluent enough in english to do the same. Then someone with the time and neccesary skills can just sub the whole thing.

Just for information. The production company behind this is Press2play which ain't the same that have done SVT coverage from DreamHack before. The ones who had the license before is Amok Studios and they did the Aftonbladet Stream at DreamHack Stockholm Invitational.

Can say what that mean in production value or so but there is a new crew that will cover DreamHack Summer for SVT.

I was thinking about mailing them as well pointing out there are a lot of foreign people wanting english subs on the show.

If I knew how to I would just rip it and sub it myself tho, then upload it to YouTube or something.

I hope that later in the show, they come back to Starcraft, and go more in depths about it. Also very cool they mentioned TeamLiquid in the first show

If you want to ask SVT about a translation, the one responsible for this project is Joakim Sandberg and his email is joakim.sandberg@svt.se. But I think it will be hard to get permission to translate since its the state that owns SVT.

I also love the clear computer case that's the first pic in the slide show. I'd be jealous, but I think it's something I wouldn't like after awhile. I'm quite happy with my HAF 912 (I went the more budget route).

Shitty translation:
How did you start with sc?
J: I have been playing games since I was around 4 years old. I had an old 486 (?) when I went to kindergarten. I came into contact with starcraft in "swedish high school" (which is around 12 years old) I knew some players we played some online. Through a coincidence I saw Korean pro SC, I then thought shit this is what I want to do.

I tried for 4-5 years to play seriously but I was around 13 you can't go to Korea when your 13. The end of 2006 I stopped playing, I played poker for 2 years. Then I moved on to sc2 when it got released. I was around 21 so I give it a last try of my childhood dream. After some months in the beta I was asked if I wished to move to korea. Yes please, and here I am.

It is an amazing feeling when the nerves kick in when you have prepared for weeks, 10 hours a day for one set. It is frightening but feels amazing. You see people between matches drinking water or coke and they have shaky hands. When it happens mid game when you shake it is not good, but it feels good. You really love what you are doing.

It is demanding to keep in shape because it takes a lot of work but mentally it gets easier when you have done it a couple of times. First time was hard to sleep, hard to do anything but you get used to it quite fast at least I have. I don't feel that much pressure when I play anymore compared to before. demanding but worth it.

This is more or less (probably less) what he said. Other than that it doesn't contain much other than TL players and Idra giving praise to Jinro (which is apparently supposed to be pronounced Jinlo after a korean brand)

I hope they actually talk about what happens in the Brood War-scene aswell. Even though I enjoy SC2 getting so big I think people dont give the BW-scene (Which is still kicking!) enough credit and I think if we want E-sports to grow we should not just make it look like SC2 is the only alternative.

Oh. I guess I should have read TL before I posted on Reddit. Here's what I wrote over there:

+ Show Spoiler +
If enough people want me to I will volunteer to translate this, and all the upcoming 7 episodes of this documentary. I really do think someone should, as it was in fact really good, and I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to contribute to the scene.

I will take it upon myself to translate the entire thing, though I would need some help in timing the subs and whatnot. Just leave a reply here if you're up for it. Otherwise I guess I'll just make a transcript.

Anyway, not to brag or anything but my English is excellent and I've actually done some translating before, primarily for speedrun commentaries. I'm up for translating this, and all of the upcoming 7 episodes, either by myself or as part of a team. The only thing I would need help with is timing the subs.

The whole reason for SVT's involvement is to get more people into the E-Sport scene. Thats why they do these docomentaries and streaming tournaments from dreamhack with swedish casters (HeatoN for example that casted the counterstrike tournament last year). The more result this gives, the faster sweden will be the next South Korea And as for the casting quality on the tournaments on Dreamhack, we have Inferno Online guys that probably would be more than happy to provide some "Average Swedish Joe" commentary

I managed to fuck up the very first sentence. I think its because the subs begin at 00:00:00 and it doesn't have time to load up or something. So the first 4 seconds of the video lacks subtitles but all he says is: "In the premiere episode of Rematch we track the origin of esports and its development, talk about Starcraft 2 and Korea as an eSport nation". The rest of the subs are fine. Also, I'm not a professional when it comes to this and its my first attempt to do subs for anything so there might be some screwups here and there but nothing too major (I hope). English isnt my native language either so there might be some strange sentence structures but I think I got the most important parts. I wanted to get this out today so I rushed it a little bit (also had to learn the program to make the subtitles/timing)

So with the above disclaimer done, here are the download links:

YOU DO NOT NEED ALL OF THESE. IT IS THE EXACT SAME FILE.

Perhaps a few Swedes could get together and make some sort of subtitles for each show?
Of course there is a lot of work to be done, but we all know there are a lot of Swedes in this community I'm from Denmark, but my Swedish isn't really up to par, so I sadly won't be able to do it at a satisfying level.

Love it, thanks so much for all the work! Haven't watched it yet but I will for sure.
I took the liberty of creating a preview picture, maybe you can put it with the links. I always like those because it gives some insight in the contents and the resolution, stuff like that.

Again many thanks and I'm sure the quality of the subs is more than awesome <3

Edit: Is it possible to rip the 720p video and code the subs over that as well?

that was nothing special

which esports infrastructure does germany have?

Bad internet providers compared to Sweden.
No Gaming Cafés.
Massive public and political prejudices against gaming/e-sports.
absolutely no notable offline Events except those from the ESL, and the ESL ones aren't that many and they aren't really bigger than what Dreamhack has announced for this year.

Only thing germany has is a lot of pro-teams (ESC, Alternate, SK-Gaming, MYM, Mousesports etc.) but they didn't really help e-sport to get established in germany so far.

Where is ARD/ZDF doing coverage of e-sport events (even if it is just their online parts) like SVT does?
Where is BILD putting a starcraft stream on their frontpage (not that I'd really want BILD to get involved lol) like Aftonbladet does?

Given the amount of players germany has, the current state of e-sports in germany is laughable.

Just watched this and it was pretty good, just sad that it won't be just about Starcraft.
I read that the next episode out of the eight will be about Battlefield 3 and Counter Strike.

I feel like it's somewhat the following of Esport that has pushed this to mainstream media, like Greykan & Hellspawn for example. I'm grateful for their existence

Why is it sad? Covering the entire esports scene is much more interesting, showing how different communities merge as one in esport.

But yeah being a Korean gamer is very imba. If you're a non-korean gamer you have to balance your game playing with earning money and your real life. If you're Korean you just sit around playing games all day eating 2 cent ramyun and becoming gosu.

Also, the 720p version in full screen looks awesome.. very nice quality overall actually.

Weird though, Im from sweden and I havent heard a word about this.. I guess they could use a bit more advertising about the show.

I believe this has been said before but svt is the swedish national television company. It is not rare that they produce and air tv-shows exclusively online. Hence I believe that the term tv-show is correct.

It is really fun to see how esports grow larger and larger by the hour right now.

Yeah its only on their SVT Play site. Its natural that they'd want to gauge the interest. I love that its categorized as "Sport" and not "Entertainment" on the site. Go SVT!

I posted it on page 5 with subtitles so those of you that cant speak english should check it out.

Svt airs a lot of HBO series. It is probably the most undervalued channel because they show a lot of new/swedish sports.

Well, as I said I sent an email to them telling them that there is a demand for subtitles, and got a reply today. It read something along the lines of "We're glad you like the show, but since it's live and we're not targeting people outside of Sweden and don't have the resources we won't be doing subtitles".

So no official subtitles to come, carry on with the unofficial ones! :D

Compairing them as national public service channels within the ebu is 100% correct. They both work in the same way, the only difference is that BBC also has international tv channels within the news and lifestyle segment.

The difference in budget and manpower is not really something that makes SVT less the swedish equivalent to the BBC.

Currently working on subbing episode 2. There's not much focus on Starcraft 2 in it but it does have an interview with the founder and current manager of team dignitas in it (EDIT: who I see also posted in the thread ^^ /wave dignitasNewmaN). The rest of the episode focuses a lot on Battlefield 3 and the battlefield series in general. However, next episode seems to focus quite heavily on SC2. Our favorite Ukranian Protoss Duck was featured in the preview for next week.

I'm hoping to have it up in a few hours but it takes a while to do all the timing and translating since I'm doing this on my own. Episode 1 focused on the history of E-sport and has interviews with Jinro and talks a ton about Starcraft and Korea. That episode, with subs, can be found on page 5.

Just finished watching the episode, and I found it quite interesting, quite a bit of talk about what people expect in the future of e-sports, and what it's like to be e-famous.

First couple of minutes felt like a big commercial for BF3 tho =/

Episode 2 with subs:

Its the same file on each site but since people sometimes have issues with one or several filehosts I figured that uploading to a variety of sites would be the best course of action.
Same disclaimer for this as the first episode, I'm not a pro at this and my english isn't perfect. I may also have misheard a couple of things such as NewmaNs favorite map or if modders are respected or recruited but I only spotted it just as I was starting to upload so take it or leave it. This episode is mainly about the Battlefield series and Counter-Strike but based on the preview it looks like next weeks episode will focus heavily on SC2. First line of the sub doesn't appear because I'm a noob but he's just talking about what the episode will focus on.

As a swede I don't really have a reason to check out your subs, but I still have a reason to thank you for spreading this show to those who do. You're doing a great job.

Tell me if you ever need any help with translating an episode. I'd be more than willing to help.

They're going through the evolution of e-sports and right now they're just doing counter strike and battlefield.. does anyone even play battlefield competetively?
Either way, more Starcraft and less mindless FPS! ♥

It's pretty cool though that they got to talk with the executive producer of battlefield 3 though. Seems like they're putting some effort into the show.
Wow.. Team Dignitas manager and founder as well... Cool O.o

Next episode should have more focus on SC2:

Translated preview snippet:
"In this episode of Rematch we meet the popular Ukranian Starcraft 2 star White-Ra! In the studio Dignitas manager Newman and Rakakas Greykarn will discuss the economics of E-Sport. We will also be taking a closer look at the E-Sport ranking systems."

Episode 3 can be found here: http://svtplay.se/v/2424085/e-sport/white-ra__sc2___pengar_och_ranking_inom_e-sport

The white-ra interview begins around 12:15. It's in english, obviously.

Great episode. Im really loving this series. If you enjoy it send SVT a message and tell them so they know e-sport has a following.

I just noticed svt uploaded a episode of a new show "Gameplay" under the esports category also. Seems to be a more standard review show, same host.

4th episode is out. http://svtplay.se/v/2432207

Haven't watched it yet, but there appears to be little to no StarCraft 2-related content.

Wihl who has been subbing these has made a compilation thread about it.
Has all the episodes, links and will be updated etc.
I would say check that out and maybe make that the default one from now on.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=222754

Go show him your support, thanks for subbing Wihl !

Another good episode, even thou no sc2. It's nice with a host that has some humour and abit of gaming knowledge.

Next ep seems to include interviews over at the swedish sc2 gaming house in stockholm.

I'm not sure actually. So far I've only managed to stumble upon them.
