lol this and the bodybuilding thread are pretty hilarious. So are the people insulting other people over simple mathmatics... It's really easy to get either answer. Sure only one of them is correct, but I think all you super genius's are forgetting how easy it is to trick yourself and do this http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=48÷(2(9+3)) ^^

In standard algebraic notation this is implied from middle school to university where I am from.

In 48/2(n+6) it would always go 48/(2n+12), not 24(n+6).

Wait people... Even if you use PEDMAS its 288.. I don't see the issue here lol. Do the parenthesis first and add 9 + 3 and get 12 so then you have 48/2*12 which = 288.

The question is stated in such an ambiguous way.

I'd say 2, though.

I got 2, but it seem like I'm the only one who used distributive property to solve this.

here let me explain, i havent done math in about 4 years but even I get this.

First do the brackets like a good boy. This leaves you with 48/2X12. Now you go from left to right because division and multiplication without brackets requires order of operations (i think that is what they called it). 48/2 is 24. 24 X 12 is 288.

There you ya go!

i've lost touch with math for so long, but i'm guessing x(x) has priority over y/y unlike y/y has priority over x*x if y/y comes first.

so in 42 / 2(12)

2(12) has priority over 42 / 2
however if it was 42 / 2 * 12
42 / 2 has priority over 2 * 12

Guys - you can't say this is deceiving because it can be written as both (48÷2)(9+3) or 48÷(2(9+3)).

The whole POINT of the problem is that there ISN'T a parentheses there to group the 2 either way. Therefore, you do what you're supposed to - solve from left to right, given that they have the same priority.

It's like if I asked what 3-5+2 is, you can't say the problem is ambiguous because it could be (3-5)+2 or 3-(5+2).

Maybe because you didn't think about it hard enough.

I have been out of school for well over that. Haven't taken math in ages and even I remember the rules when it comes to grade school math.

It really isn't that hard to understand. ._.

EDIT: It's been 9 years. Wow. x-x

2(9+3)

is written as 48/(2(9+3)), which is not 48/2(9+3)

if we isolate 2(9+3), it's written as 2*(9+3)

hence it should be rewritten as 48/2*(9+3) before any evaluation is done.

I bet the reason it's not written this way is just to cause the confusion.

It clearly is just a catchy question purposely bad formated to generate discussions

I am 16, and I have no education with math in any way, but it seems logic to me that the answer is 288...

The question here isn't how to evaluate a/b*c but if an omitted multiplication sign has higher priority than normal multiplication.
But the one thing I've learned after professors abusing notation in so many ways is that you define mathematical symbols just like it is convenient for you.

Wow I can't believe how many of you guys GENUINELY think its 2 lol.

P in PEMDAS means whats in the parenthesis, but when you treat the parenthetical as a multiplication, its just a multiplication

So it becomes 48/2*(9+3)

so you do parenthesis first

48/2*12

then order of operations, 48/2 first

24*12

which is 288

In a calculator, it's 288. No matter where you type it in. But it's also the same through common arithmetic. 48/2*(9+3)=48/2*12=288 The idea that the "brackets" magically stay with a scaler after the operation has occurred escapes me entirely.

This should be intuitive...at least all this was for me. Maybe I'm just even weirder than I thought since I've never taken an "algebra" course in my life (went from random geometry proof crap to precalc trig), yet I'm still doing just fine in calc 3 (test today, line integrals, vector fields, change of variable, and goodies like double and triple integrals.)

I feel that this is just a failing in how math is being presented in schools, and a general misunderstanding of math as a whole.

This is not a trick question, and I cannot see in any way how it could been seen as such.

This is why nobody uses the ÷ symbol, it's confusing.

The true answer is of course 48 % 24 = 0.

Again, its NOT a badly formatted problem. There's a REASON the left-to-right rule exists.

Having two numbers separated by a parenthesis is an implied *, just because its ommitted doesn't mean its not there.
