lol this and the bodybuilding thread are pretty hilarious. So are the people insulting other people over simple mathmatics... It's really easy to get either answer. Sure only one of them is correct, but I think all you super genius's are forgetting how easy it is to trick yourself and do this http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=48÷(2(9+3)) ^^

Yeah, as a frequent algebra scribbler i see 48/2(3+9) as:

48
--------
2(3+9)

for that exact reason.

If you multiplicate without even using a multiplication sign, its stronger than dividing.

a/bcde = a/(bcde), not acde/b

Maybe because you didn't think about it hard enough.

The brackets disappear after you do the bracket part of the equation. At that point it becomes:

48/2*12 = 288

Or written as
48/2(12)

Any numbers written inside a single bracket beside eachother is the same as multiplication. It's just another way of writing that out. A number inside a bracket besides another number simply signifies multiplication. For example:

2x is the same as 2(x) or even 2 * X.
Satire is a lesson, parody is a game.

Things like this aren't a very good indicator of intelligence, dunno if you can conclude anything from this.

Yet, just to showcase the intellectual level of a bodybuilder's forum in Bulgaria here's a true story. One guy opens a thread with the question "I have 1 kilo of protein. If I take it all in a month it's too much. If i take it in two months that would be an amount to small per day. Wat do?" and it took 3 pages until some guy answered "try month and a half"... yep, true story :D
Yeah, whatever

48÷2(9+3)=+
Yea its basically 48 / 2 x ( 9+3).

BEDMAS

Brackets first, so you get 48 / 2 x 12.
From here nothing takes priority so you just do left to right.

48

2(9+3)

is written as 48/(2(9+3)), which is not 48/2(9+3)

if we isolate 2(9+3), it's written as 2*(9+3)

hence it should be rewritten as 48/2*(9+3) before any evaluation is done.
