In standard algebraic notation the 2 in 2(9+3) is prioritized over the 48/2.

In 48/2(n+6) it would always go 48/(2n+12), not 24(n+6).

48 / 2(9+3) does not = 48 /2 * 9+3
Fall down 7 times, stand up 8.

This is why there's a generally understood convention in how you write down an equation. It really doesn't make any sense to write it that way. It should be written 48/2*(9+3) or better yet 48*(9+3)/2. The latter is preferred and you can probably make do without the * to denote multiplication. It drives me crazy when equations are written in the way it's written in the OP.

Also, people still use that symbol for division?

Edit: Dangling participle!
Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me].

The way it is written is indeed very deceptive, and I honestly don't think any less of someone who just say 2 carelessly. It is the people who read the explanation on why it's 288 and still insist on 2 that worry me.

Knowledge and smartness are two different things. Knowing the operation priority has nothing to do with how smart you are. And just for the record, I personally knew and did it right ...

It could be both.

Depends on the writing, really

You could see it as
(48 ÷ 2) * (9 + 3) = 288
or
(48) ÷ (2 * (9 + 3)) = 2

if you just write 48÷2(9+3) you can't really be sure of which you want, in my opinion it's a bad formatted question

Edit:

I got 2, but it seem like I'm the only one who used distributive property to solve this.

Someone on the bodybuilding form has this in their signature: "You have enemies, good that means you've stood for something in your life.
-Eminem aka Marshall Mathers"

Im pretty sure it was Winston Churchill that said that. Also, I got 288 so I feel like a genius (which I am).

I'd say if the multiplication sign is omitted then multiplication binds stronger than division. Just like 1/2x is 1/(2x) and not (1/2)*x.

But that's just a matter of convention. You just define stuff as you need, and as long as it's consistent it doesn't matter. Arguing about conventions is utterly stupid.

Writing math like 1/2x in text like this itself doesn't make very much sense. This is the very reason it is usualy written with a numerator and denomerator. That way no confusion can exist. Still strictly speaking multiplaction and devision are equal as they are inverse operations. Therefore they should just be treated from left to right. However writing the 2*x such as in 2x binds stronger isn't really standard convenction. Since there is no well excepted convention the standard rules should just be followed saying 1/2x = (1/2)*x.
