Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Kaua'i is okay right now, everyone's just getting prepared for the tsunami to hit. I'm around four or five miles away from the shore right now. Phone book said our area didn't need to be evacuated so my family and I are just roughing it at home right now. 2AM and we're still awake.
Watching the news about Oahu, looks like they're getting ready for it too.
Waves are expected to hit the islands within the hour, I'll keep you updated. They said it's around 2m/6ft waves that are on its way, scheduled to hit our island at 3:07am HST.

Yeah, they shouldn't talk about it. It will obv be over 100.
Open it as a network stream in VLC or similiar. Even if you don't understand what they say, you can see the current amount of missing/dead in the top right corner, as well as the lates videos from the streets.

how high was this earthquake using the JMA seismic scale, just wondering O_O;;
"It was measured at 7 on the JMA seismic intensity scale in the northern Miyagi prefecture, while the Japan Meteorological Agency's tsunami warning listed the magnitude as 8.8."
I jumped out of bed the moment I seen someone post this on FB, 8.9 is the biggest ever isn't it?
My thoughts are with those in Japan right now, and any other country that might be affected by this, reports that the wave was 10meters high, watching from the BBC it's horrific to think that wave is still going.

Glad to hear it, man - sounds like most folks in Tokyo are alright, but yeah, it's scary.
My condolences to any and all affected by this disaster.
If you are truly as interested in delving deeper into earthquake prediction as I am, and thus prevention of loss of life, and aren't afraid to interest yourself in a bit of "out of the box" science I must impart to all one of my favorite researchers on the subject, whom I have followed for the better part of a year. This is no joke, this guy is on to something and has accurately predicted a couple of specific earthquakes several days in advance, and correctly warned of numerous others (albeit unable to pinpoint their exact location).
This is a scary event. Every life lost is a tragedy and the destruction to some of the coastal towns looks down right horrific.
With that said I'm still bothered with the spin some of the news networks are putting on it. Watching some of the standard cable news channels it started to sound like Japan had been leveled and sunk and this was the end. Nuclear reactors having meltdowns. Untold casualties on the coasts. Buildings collapsing inland. Tsunamis washing miles and miles over farmlands. A tsunami of unknown size headed for Hawaii and possibly elsewhere.
And then I turn it to BBC. One of their Tokyo correspondents is remarking how there's no damage to any major buildings in the city from the quake, no mass injuries/fatalities, and most people are walking around, shopping working, and everyone is a little relieved it wasn't the "big one" that they're always waiting for and just keeping tabs on what was happening around the coastal that were hit. They then remark that there was a coastal power plant that was shut down as a security precaution and that there is still a Tsunami warning for most of the Pacific Basin and there might be some coastal flooding for Hawaii. Japan is also issuing a national emergency and will probably be relying on international help to best respond to the areas requiring aid.
Horrible yes. Anything nearing the destruction and loss of life caused by the recent Myanmar cyclone, Thai tsunami, or Haitian earthquake, probably not. But it'll still receive 5x the media coverage because of the affluence of the affected areas and the availability of material to cover that will increase viewership and revenue.
Let me reiterate that this is a tragedy. I'm doubly bothered by the cha-ching cha-ching that for profitable media sees it as.
It looks like there was a volcanic eruption in Indonesia following the earthquake. Shit's really going down in Asia. I'm not looking forward to what else comes out of this.
AKARTA, Indonesia -- One of Indonesia's most active volcanos has erupted, sending lava and searing gas clouds tumbling down its slopes.
Volcanology official Agus Budianto said Friday that authorities were still trying to evacuate residents living along the slopes of Mount Karangetang.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
The 5,853-foot (1,784-meter) mountain is located on Siau, part of the Sulawesi island chain. It last erupted in August, killing four people.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is located on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
The eruption happened hours after a massive earthquake in Japan that triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami.
