I do think its worth a view though.

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I do think its worth a view though. There are people claiming predictions of global events all the time based on their religion or some kind of pseudo-science. 99.9% of the time nothing happens and these people are ignored as being nutcases. Every once in a while something major does happen, like this quake. It's not surprising that with the amount of doomsday-predictors, some have to score a "lucky hit" every now and then. It's just statistics.

Source:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698 Dont know if it was posted before. But this is some scary shit. We usualy focus on the initial damage, but sometimes the aftermath is as much or even more deadly.

With that said I'm still bothered with the spin some of the news networks are putting on it. Watching some of the standard cable news channels it started to sound like Japan had been leveled and sunk and this was the end. Nuclear reactors having meltdowns. Untold casualties on the coasts. Buildings collapsing inland. Tsunamis washing miles and miles over farmlands. A tsunami of unknown size headed for Hawaii and possibly elsewhere. And then I turn it to BBC. One of their Tokyo correspondents is remarking how there's no damage to any major buildings in the city from the quake, no mass injuries/fatalities, and most people are walking around, shopping working, and everyone is a little relieved it wasn't the "big one" that they're always waiting for and just keeping tabs on what was happening around the coastal that were hit. They then remark that there was a coastal power plant that was shut down as a security precaution and that there is still a Tsunami warning for most of the Pacific Basin and there might be some coastal flooding for Hawaii. Japan is also issuing a national emergency and will probably be relying on international help to best respond to the areas requiring aid. Horrible yes. Anything nearing the destruction and loss of life caused by the recent Myanmar cyclone, Thai tsunami, or Haitian earthquake, probably not. But it'll still receive 5x the media coverage because of the affluence of the affected areas and the availability of material to cover that will increase viewership and revenue. Let me reiterate that this is a tragedy. I'm doubly bothered by the cha-ching cha-ching that for profitable media sees it as. I think it is somewhere in the middle. There is a lot more concern than people out shopping would indicate. Many of the initial issues outside the affected areas are the cancellation of transportation too. There are 3000 people at Shinjuku station alone waiting for buses and taxis because the trains are down. Same with flights etc.

Wow I can only imagine. Must take quite some time to get them all there and back again, not to talk about any roads that might have it's capacity overloaded, or even destroyed by the quake.

I hope Obama slaps some sense into them, and I hope Japan will be okay. Was that on the website, or just broadcast? I'm curious about that - the US Navy isn't exactly a volunteer operation, I don't think there's any room to "refuse" your orders.

At tokyo, voice function of all celler phones was dead, but internet access was alive. Japanese could ave communication via email or twitter. We have the biggest e-Sports Starcraft2 event tomorrow, and I would have added commentary on the streaming. I am not sure how it would go, I am very sorry about this earthquake.
