Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

If you search "inside the evacuation zone" there is a video where two guys drive within 1.5km of the nuclear power plant and see radiation at a max of 112 microserverts or whatever.

The reactor didn't EXPLODE and send radioactive fallout everywhere like it did in Chernobyl. If Japan has to construct a sarcophagus around the reactors, then the radioactive material should stop coming out. They couldn't really do that in Chernobyl since there was already of ton of the material scattered across a pretty big area.

I'm interested what the Russians plan to do, if the Government of Japan has requested their aid at Level 7 than they should have something in mind.

some people are thinking that the problem is worse now because of the upgrade, but that's not correct.

Do you have any proof regarding this or are you just voicing your opinion. Please correct me if I'm wrong but a couple of weeks ago people were talking about how to classify this crisis and it was said it was too early to rate it higher and foreign "experts" were doing it wrong. Now after so much time has gone they can raise it to this "7" grade but it doesn't mean that things just suddenly got way worse. It just a number which was also given to the Chernobyl disaster but that doesn't mean things have been getting out of hand like it did back then. I don't see the reason to focus so much on this instead of the whole picture of what's going on at Fukushima Daiichi. To me this is fearmongering fed to by the media and it's understandable why TEPCO/the Japanese government is holding things like this back when media is assuming the worst and making everyone panic even more.

If all water is gone from the cooling pool, the exposed fuel rods will overheat and could possibly melt or even explode, spreading highly radioactive material. NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko did not say how he obtained that information. The Japanese nuclear safety agency and the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., have denied the claim. A utility spokesman said the "condition is stable" at Unit 4.
