Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

(At least not the ones I used ) Im a bit worried about Fukushima tho. Even if tepco said its ok I take it with a grain of salt. I dont think theyre lying but they seem to have a tendency to be slow and to fuck up.

And yeah, Tepco's sort of been iffy the whole time... I just write Japan since I'm Japanese and it often makes for fun doramarama with Korean people. Was born in Saitama, though.

The Japanese government's nuclear safety agency has decided to raise the crisis level of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant accident from 5 to 7, the worst on the international scale. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency made the decision on Monday. It says the damaged facilities have been releasing a massive amount of radioactive substances, which are posing a threat to human health and the environment over a wide area. Source

From the tsunami damaging then, I'm going to assume that the backup generators were housed somewhere outside with some protection. Wouldn't it be sensible to have something as critical as a backup generator housed underground in case of tsunamis? Of course, no one could have predicted this, but Japan is pretty damn susceptible to tsunamis, so it would make sense for an engineer to think of this. The backup generators were flooded and ruined by the water. The whole power plant in general was designed with tsunamis in mind, but the wave was higher than what was expected, if I remember right what I read.

Edit - Googled it and the tsunami carried away the generators fuel tanks -_-. I don't even know what to say to that to be honest. Don't think this has been posted yet. Interesting read, to say the least. Radioactive sea water is being released back into the ocean. Japan is requesting Russia's helps and the concrete pit @ Reactor #2 is confirmed to have a leak. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/04/us-japan-idUSTRE72A0SS20110404

Anyone can confirm if there is some expert saying that the quake will move further south and with increased magnitude. My gf is in Tokyo, she is considering leaving now if the quake keep going on like this.
