Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I've not heard of this speculative 4.7 shock?

There's been many aftershocks every day at around 5 magnitude. It's not big that's why. If you check the links posted you will see it mentioned in the statistics from the sites tracking all earthquakes.

TEPCO says today's quake didn't damage the plant in Fukushima. Staff working on the plant were safely evacuated.

I'm in Tokyo right now on vacation.

So far the news hasn't reported any tsunami damage - first waves were supposed to hit around 11:50 (30min ago) at a height of ~0.5m. Other prefectures warning times are for 0:20. Most warnings are for 0.5m with a 1m warning for miyagi prefecture.

No further damage/danger for the nuclear reactors reported at this point.

I assume it's a "good" thing that this quake is considered an aftershock of the big March 11 quake?

Shaking in Tokyo was minimal. It started with vertical shaking surprisingly, and lasted 2 minutes or so (crazy long), but unlike last time there was zero damage here. Can't comment for the Tohoku region, but a 1m tsunami should be no problem I would think.

Seems like the tsunami decided to not show up and we can all calm down (for now).

-_- well yeah, cause there was a 7.1 aftershock...the blue flash is possibly a power transformer exploding

Pretty massive, was seen from 50 miles away. Must have been a big one.

Lots of fun in Fukushima prefecture. Started like the big one, a small amount of shaking which suddenly ramped up. Lot's of Japanese phones have an earthquake warning function - seriously I have nightmares about that sound now. It woke us up and within a few seconds we had scrambled outside into the car park. Our buildings have taken damage over the past few weeks, so I didn't want to take chances. Stood there for a minute watching the buildings and cars all swaying, then went back inside to catch the details. 7.4 off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, same area as the big one, which was later downgraded to a 7.1.

Minimal damage but NHK news reported two nuclear plants in Miyagi lost power, but their backup generators kicked in automatically. Fukushima Daiichi has no new problems and most injuries seem to be from people running outside and tripping. That said there seemed to be an explosion in Miyagi, not sure what that was about - maybe just lights tripping out in the distance. Sigh. Any time these want to stop I honestly wouldn't mind.

Was the decision to vacation in Japan made before or after the disaster?
