What to pay for a watch if pretty similar to how you reason when buying a car. If it only sits in a garage because you're afraid to dent/scratch it, it's over your budget. (unless you are a collector)
At the same time, you will never get as happy as when you get the watch you really want instead of something you settle for.

If you'll be too afraid to dent it, don't buy it.

The advice to buy something cheap-ish first to get used to wearing a watch is a good suggestion too.

i'm thinking of getting a JLC ultra thin perpetual, the thing is just pure elegance and beauty, and actually fits my wrist (i am quite thin)

would the best place to buy be in switzerland or US?

I've read on wus that prices are competitive, and it really depends whether you have a good relationship with the store or not.

That watch would be on my list if only they could find a better place for that damned year. =/

That's my working watch atm. Nice color which is easy on the eyes. Lot's of numbers so it's very easy to use even in stress situations. And a very comfortable and dirt-neutral nylon wristband. The best part is the price. 20 bucks including shipping, so if it breaks I'm like "well, guess I buy another one."

Got my new Tissot tradition perpetual calendar watch today. Love it so far, although it is a bit bigger than I thought it would be (pic below of it next to my Bulova Marine Star, which is a pretty large watch itself. Img cut off, right click view img to see comparison). The leather band is a hybrid of a snap and a regular belt style, but is too hard to slide over my hand with just the snap undone, so will probably have to undo the whole thing each time I put it on and take it off, which is kind of disappointing, but nothing major. (Might just get a new band). Luckily the perpetual day, month, and date was already set which is good, being it looks pretty complicated in the instructions to set it to the correct year. Overall, pretty happy with it, and the box is amazing, has little cabinets, drawers, and such. Thanks again to Chaggi for turning me on to Tissot ^_-

Edit: Figured out accidentally that the watch band unsnaps from two places, not just one, so now is easy to get on and off wrist without unbuckling. ^_^

The Tissot looks really nice. My OCD kicks in on the month and day complications breaking the big circle though

Honestly, the picture doesn't do it justice. The sapphire crystal has a slight concave which makes it look amazing when light hits it, hard to see in pics.

I like the symmetry.

Reminds of this beauty:

A friend has it. When he showed it to me I stared at it for minutes in awe. It's freaking amazing. And at 6:00:00 there's just one thin line from top to bottom.

For those of you that didn't see this yet.

Patek's 175 years anniversary watch, the GrandMaster Chime 5175R. Most complicated watch they ever made.
Only 7 were made, one goes to their museum, the other 6 will be (or have been) sold at about $2.5M each.

Not quite working out for you, good sir

As for buying expensive watches: try to refrain! Whatever you're wearing on your wrist, you will always want something more expensive! So you might as well start out modest

Impressive to say the least, but the Henry Graves Supercomplication is even more impressive to me, 24 complications without the aid of computers to design it.

Wow reading that watch must be so confusing, unlearning the basic fast check of the hands to see what time it is and relearning a new one.

I like the two Tissot watches in the past 2 pages

The metal bracelet one and the brown leather one but I cannot find it on the website. Is it a T-classic?

Any help would be appreciated

That's beautiful. I'm not huge into watches, but I do think that the artistry that Patek puts in is masterful.

Current, temporary watch

Scratched to hell, the words "world time" and "illuminator" wore off in a week. My last watch was a Casio too, but the strap corroded through and I figured I'd just get a new one instead of replacing the strap if I could even do that.

Thinking about upgrading to something around $200-$300. I really don't care about extra features like chronographs and calendars, but wouldn't mind them either. Was looking at the Victorinox Maverick, Victorinox Swiss Army Infantry Chronograph, Hamilton Khaki Field Green Dial, Tissot Couturier, and a few others. I was also considering the Seiko Black Monster, but it looks a little weird to me. Do you guys have any recommendations?
