How much % discounted must it be for it to be a good deal? I know it's subjective but I would like a rough estimate so I can look around.
Thanks!!

Some brands (like, say, Invicta), have watches with MSRP of $1000 but that actually sell for amazon at $200 constantly. Mid-range brands, fashion brands, etc. lose value quite fast in general (because there's not much value there to begin with). For higher-range watches (let's say $500 and above), it's worth considering buying a used one. There's no general rule of the thumb but condition is the main factor. If it has its box, papers, no serious scratches, all movement working correctly, then 20%-30% lower than the market price for a new one is a good deal (note that a worn down leather strap is not a big deal, you can easily replace that). If it has significant marks of wear, then the price will go to about 50% of the new one. But, of course, this is really really subjective. For example Sector had this Valjoux 7750 watch that normally sells for $1000+ in stores here in Romania, and there was a promotion where you could have them at a whooping $280 from an authorized reseller! There were a lot of people who bought them and then sold them for ~$600, but they were in mint condition so, which is it? Is it a good price because it's 60% of the store price in mint condition, or do you feel ripped off because you know they bought it for <$300? ![]() Again, these margins also shift with price. If you're looking at Rolex for example, you'll hardly ever find one at 50% of store price unless it's an old model. Same goes for other large brands like Omega, while lesser-appreciated brands can go really low in price (I have a friend who bought a $4950 Grand Seiko Snowflake for $1400, with serious signs of wear but no real issues). So yeah, bottom line: -25% is good if watch is good condition. Lower price with flaws. ![]() @Ettick - there are a lot of watches in that price line. Hamilton is a good brand but in the end it's all about what design you like the most. At that price range you only need to worry about whether you want an automatic or not. If you want a quartz, then just go for the looks. If you want an automatic, then your choices will be cut short and the decision should be much easier.

Buying preloved only ever makes sense for high end watches because the savings actually makes a difference. Buying a used Rolex or JLC etc at 25 or 30% off retail amounts to thousands of dollars, which more than makes up for the cost of having it serviced and cleaned, and a new strap with a lot left over. It's worth it even with a few scuffs. Buying a ~$1,000 watched used, unless you are certain it is in like new or pristine condition, is difficult because you'll save maybe $200-$300 dollars with the risk that it might need service, reducing your savings. The cost of service plus the wear and tear on the case/glass/strap weigh more than $300 imo going vintage is a different matter altogether

I've been debating about this forever, it went from aqua terra to grand seiko, to tudor dives then speedmaster. Now I think I'll just buy an omega 300m new, and get it over with.

Or maybe it's not worth the difference, but I think it looks cooler, especially this version - http://coolspotters.com/files/photos/21720/omega-seamaster-planet-ocean-watch-profile.jpg

I'm studying to be an EMT-B and will need a watch to monitor HR/RR, etc. I want something that is sturdy, easy to clean, and it needs to have a second hand since watching the digital watch numbers fuck up my counting. any suggestions? Well sturdy and easy to clean should be any diver with a seconds hand. What kind of style of watch do you prefer though?

Same with wearing the rings. :D I'm torn on the actual looks of the watch. Some days I like it, some days I can't stand it. But the weight is so nice that I just wear it every day. Wore it for two weeks straight without realizing that the battery was dead... T.T

Will obviously check them both out when I go to an AD.

I'd ideally like to have three watches (not counting beaters) something more dressy made by IWC, a sporty watch, like SMP, and something that's just iconic, like speedy. I'll start with an SMP (or PO).

I like this, but I'm worried it'll be a bit fat and look out of place on my girly wrists ![]() + Show Spoiler + ![]() Any particular brands I should look up that makes lean watches with the same kind of minimalism?

Yeah I tried some Vostoks on and they are indeed large pieces. Minimalistic, it is not, you will find a lot of watches with simple designs, such as Nomos as someone mentioned already (although at 2-3x times the price). I would also look into Logines for nice minimalist watches, and a slightly cheaper price than nomos (emphasis on the "slightly"). Especially their "Le Grande Classique" series. Hamilton makes decent, interesting, minimalist watches too, for under $1000. Like so: http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f71/553439d1320876445-hamilton-jazzmaster-orient-star-hammy8.jpg http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f357/377018d1295715952-hamilton-jazzmaster-open-heart-p1020799.jpg http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f71/1406503d1393912641-talk-me-out-hamilton-intra-matic-image_347628-hamilton-watches-hamilton-intra-matic.jpg P.S.: My main issue with Vostok is that they use (mostly) older seiko movements, that are a bit on the lower-end of the scale. Then they charge a lot for the watch due to the tritium lume, which is cool, but doesn't really justify the watch costing 10x or more than the movement is worth.
