I will play devil's advocate and declare that my arms are pretty much void of hair... women are generally pretty envious of that feature of mine... also my soft hands...

My Skagen (~$150) is the most expensive watch I own and I feel like it was worth more because it is a fraction of the weight of any of my other watches and very sleek. The band is smooth and doesn't catch arm hair in it. It's also has a simple stylish (imo) look.

The other nice watch I have is a old ass automatic Timex. It's at least 30 years old and still working.

Most watches over $250 ~90% of people would be just as satisfied (performance/appearance wise) with a knock-off. The people who frequent this forum are probably part of the ~10% who might notice the difference but most people wouldn't be the wiser.

Random side note: that $20,000 watch pictured a few posts back was on hardcore pawn and the owner guy bought a knockoff for $5,000 thought it "looked perfect" and later found out it was a knockoff. Now I know the show is mostly fake but it's a very real type of scenario. Many knockoffs are so good that even experienced people can't tell the difference without looking up the serial number.

Yeah, I guess that's what they are trying to imply, but in this age where if you don't simply own a camera outright, nearly every phone has a camera; posting a stock picture is just like saying you don't actually own this watch.

I mean in real life, when you show your watch, you simply show your wrist, you don't head towards a watch showroom and point out the watch you own lol.

This view is so creatively negative, it´s amazing. I guess there´s always room for being upset.

I dunno man, I think if you can afford a $5000 watch, you would own a camera or a phone with a decent camera. But hey keep thinking it's negative.

I find watches to have a close parallel in cars. A 20 year old civic and a quartz watch will do just fine, often even better than their luxury or exclusive counterpart but they dont make me cream and paint my pants with jizz like an AMG C63 or a Lange1 would.

Suunto Ambit 2.

GPS, altimeter, Barometer, thermometer, heartrate monitor, storm alarm, compass. It can log exercise and hikes. Oh, and it tells time too.

But seriously though, I love this watch, and its subtle enough to get away with in most situations. Really, the only time I choose not to wear it is for formal gatherings.

That's more of a trip computer than a watch though.

I'm kidding, I have a polar watch for gym and running, but it's not that fancy, I don't like GPS in watches due to the fact that it murders your battery and you have to recharge it via USB or similar. Making me want to use my phone for that kind of stuff rather than my watch.

And regarding the discussion above, expensive watches, it's a niche thing, I agree. It's like expensive clothes, for example. You can't really tell the difference between a $100 dress and a $10.000 designer dress, because you're a guy and you don't give a f**k about dresses. It's the same thing with watches. If you care enough to read about it, watch some videos, see some in real life, you will very easily understand where most of the price difference lies. If you don't, then you don't. There's no shame in not being able to tell which watch is more expensive.

Same goes for a lot of things, really. People don't usually buy expensive watches for show, because there are a lot of easier ways to display wealth. Most buy them for themselves. I saw a guy with a $6000 Omega Planet Ocean riding the subway a couple of years back, which doesn't happen in Romania, since everyone thinks cars are a symbol of wealth.

So, I am looking to buy a new watch. My budget is flexible but around US $800. The kind of watches I'm into:
http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-241431-Maverick-Black/dp/B003ZJW7FY/ref=sr_1_46?

Black/Silver. Analogue. Sleek and cool looking..

I don't really know much about brands and stuff, so if you guys new really good brands that have a style I would like, or a really cool style I'm not familiar with and I should consider, let me know!

I would look into Hamilton Jazzmaster Chrono. It's not as sporty as the Victorinox in the picture but it's pretty awesome none the less.
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/2443/hamiltonjazzmastercrono.jpg
http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H32616133-Jazzmaster-Chronograph-Watch/dp/B001F7MIW0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408258728&sr=8-1&keywords=hamilton jazzmaster chrono
The automatic version (not quartz) has a reliable swiss movement, ETA Valjoux 7750.

The quartz is significantly cheaper (about half price) but the automatic will last you much longer if you take care of it properly.

Other watches I'd consider in this price range are:
Steinhart Marine Officer Grey - http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/Marine-Officer-Grey,879.html
Tissot Veloci-T - http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T0244271105100-Veloci-T-Tachymeter-Watch/dp/B004673ET2/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1408259362&sr=8-11&keywords=tissot veloci-t
Bulova Accutron Gemini - http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f3CN-iFWs-8/U9g8kKos57I/AAAAAAAA9YY/V97O9BYCI04/s1600/63C106bulova.jpg

The thing is, there are a LOT of watches that match your description. But you can afford something with an automatic chronograph, so I would suggest you go for that. The valjoux 7750 movement is in most of the above watches (if not all), and it's an old, good, tried and trusted movement. It will also keep a good resale value unlike most watches, especially if you don't bump and bruise it. If you choose to go for a quartz or a non-chronograph watch, then we would have to recommend a whole bunch of other watches.

I dunno about its full functions tho it was a gift. I mostly use its chrono and compass when i go out sailing, its a lil too big to wear it casually

Sure you can. If it keeps better time then its the $20 watch =]

Before seeing the back, I thought the 20$ watch was the expensive one. But then again I know nothing about watches. Or maybe it was the swearing blasting through my headphones that distracted me, either way, I guess I'd take the one that keeps better time.

Now I got a question for you watch-savvy guys. Why is quartz bad? I guess the tradition of watchmaking goes out the window and you have to buy a new watch every couple of years, but that doesn't seem so bad to me.

^The $20k watch has nicely finished elements which shine in certain light. That's usually a sign of an expensive watch because it means that they're either made of expensive materials (such as platinum), which is the case above I believe, or simply really polished/chromed steel, but it still requires considerably more work than just sticking on normal bits of metal. A watch that shines in the light like that is likely to cost at least $1000, generally.

Regarding quartz, it's not bad. It depends on what you want from a movement. Quartz is generally more precise, and you don't have to worry about it stopping if you don't wear it for three days. But yes, the issue is that it doesn't last. Even if you change batteries, it's still an electronic movement. Eventually, something will go wrong. It can be 3-4 years it can be 15 years, but it will eventually break down, and when it does, nobody will fix it for you, since they are too cheap and it's easier to replace the whole movement than to build spare parts (not to mention that new movements come out every year, so why bother keeping the old ones alive).
Mechanical watches can last for tens of years if they are serviced periodically. They can be fixed, even if they're 50 years old, which is important since watches sometimes hold sentimental value. Also, when you buy a watch that costs over $500, you're not that ok when it comes to replacing it after "a couple of years".
It's also a geek thing. Mechanical is more interesting, it's alive, you have to feed it, it sounds better, it feels better (slightly heavier), and most of the time the second hand is significantly smoother. Some people like these things. Some people buy them for the heritage, etc.

But, again, it depends on what you want. If you want a watch because you just need a watch or a fashion accessory, then quartz is perfectly fine.
