Well yes, compared to the middle ages we are doing great. But as in all things it can move forward and be better. Actually it has been better then now so there is no reason to be happy now.
We want more truth, more responsibility and more morals from our governments. Today the USA is the one doing all the fucked up stuff around the world, but tomorrow any of the other countries could be doing it.
We want this all to stop, we do not want that tomorrow. We do not want counties that spend so much money on weapons and use force to take stuff. Things can be accomplished without a big stick, people just need to start trying it.
US government has done a lot to people all around the world. In EU it has bullied governments to join them in their misguided ways and their war crimes. For my country, it made it enter Nato with promises and intimidations. It made us send our people to Afganistan to die and further USA imperialistic agenda.
Yes, this guy is a hero. He is sharing the truth with the world while risking his life and comforts. He is a bigger hero than ANY US soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan! It would be so much easier for him to be like 99.9% of the world, and work 8-9 hours, and then come home and eat dinner, watch some TV and surf the internet and then repeat the same process until the rest of his life.
I know you are happy with such life and you for some reason perceive this guy as a threat to that, but you need to understand that unlike you many people in this world are not happy to ignore the world around us as it truly is. They want to move forward and make it as best as they can during their lifetime so their children or their sister/brothers children can live in a better world.
And often to do that you HAVE to defy governments, especially when they have become corrupt as most of the western ones have.

Quite honestly, all governments lie. Every single one of them. However only the United States government got caught by a single guy which showed in what way they were lying to not only other governments, but united states citizens as well (IE grabbing false support for global warming). It begins to raise the question of how can you defend the current government that's in office when all they have said has been proved wrong. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an anarchist. Hell if anything id consider myself a bit of a patriot. But I cannot find any worth while argument to defend the actions of the current legislation. And what can be said about those people who blindly follow a government when you don't even know what their motives are? Especially with freedoms slowly being taking away being replaced with the illusion of choice (IE paper or plastic, scan or pat down, public or private education, etc..) as for why this guy targeted US alone? No idea, as there is just as much dirt in any other country. Must be because the US is still classified as a sole superpower, or perhaps they screwed him somehow. Wait, you're talking about Assange, right? How did he target just the US alone?

Next thing you know, his plane to Sweden has a mysterious accident. Maybe it gets hijacked by a terrorist. Maybe while he's in custody, he trips and falls in the shower and breaks his neck. Maybe while he's on the way to the courthouse, he stops to tie his shoes, falls and hits some bullets with his face. Maybe he just has a sudden heart attack and doctors can't explain it. Maybe one of the Interpol agents escorting this guy goes crazy and kills him, and later investigations show he was always a little overzealous and that the agency thought he had some mental issues and was already considering moving him to another position and they think maybe personal life troubles attributed to his breakdown.
A lot of people want this guy dead. A lot. Now I know we'd all like to believe the US government is a lot more competent than to blatantly murder the guy when the whole world's watching, but it's hard to have such faith in the government after some of these leaks. Plus, they're not the only players here with something to gain from his death. Political prisoners are almost always freed even in the worst of countries; Castro, Mandela, Suu Kyi. It is more dangerous to kill and make a martyr than just to put in jail where they are irrelevant. Right, it'd be much worse to kill him and thus turn him into a martyr. But you're assuming all the players involved will be thinking rationally and having such foresight. Plus, he's perhaps the most extreme political prisoner there has ever been in human history. Also, him being somehow extradited and never being heard from again is also a possibility. No, it's not a possibility. He isn't going to disappear into the night or vanish to some third world country the CIA uses for extraordinary rendition-esque purposes, nor is he going to DIE or some other equally retarded suggestion. He's going to get tried, freed, and will continue to do his thing because it'd be the most supremely retarded asinine dumbshit thing in the world to actually consider that governments (rather, people actually in power) seriously weigh the option of assassination against such a high-profile figure that's being blasted across every media channel in existence. People love to just throw out extreme exaggerations without actually thinking about them. Korean border spat? WORLD WAR 3. Iran announces some new resumption of a nuclear facility? WORLD WAR 3. US Carrier sent to the Persian Gulf or the Yellow Sea? Yep, you guessed it, the internets will call WW3 without missing a beat. This paragraph is a bit of rant, to be sure, but people need to calm the fuck down sometimes. Pretty cool rant bro. I'd argue that it's a pretty asinine bullshit move to launch this kind of blatantly transparent smear campaign against the man involving some case of consensual sex that wouldn't even be considered a felony in the US and turn it into an international manhunt, and if the people involved are willing to be that obvious, then anything's possible, but that's just me. You're free to disagree, but unless you're prophetic, let's not throw around blanket absolutes like "it's not a possibility" without some evidence at hand, that just makes you as bad as the people you're raging about. I'd argue that it's equally retarded to, as you say, "throw around blanket absolutes", that the US is behind this smear campaign without "some evidence at hand". But it's blatantly transparent, right? How did the US pressure Sweden into issuing this warrant? Any evidence? Any ideas? Any...well any anything besides an assumption based on zero evidence? Because assertions based on zero evidence are just so entertaining! Please quote exactly where I stated in that post that the US is behind the smear campaign. Please quote exactly where I stated in that post that the US pressured Sweden into issuing this warrant. Also, those aren't "blanket absolutes". Please learn the definition of terms before you try to throw them around. A blanket absolute statement would be something like "It's not a possibility". "I think the US is behind this arrest" is not an absolute statement, it's an opinion, or a baseless assertion at worst. Don't try to be cute and use others' words when you don't even understand them. Sorry, I thought you were one of the people saying the US is behind the smear campaign. It's implied clearly from your posts, but my apologies! Show nested quote +PS. This is exactly what I wanted to say, you summed it up better than I did. I'm not blindly following our government either, I know they have their own dark secrets just like any other countries legislation. I do however realize that it is incredibly stupid to start leaking secret information to the ENTIRE WORLD. It gets everyone on alert, increases tention, and ultimately does more harm than good.

I mean I don't want to urinate on your street celebration, but the US government was partially to fully responsible for not regulating the banking sector resulting in the recession that has undoubtedly directly affected any university graduates here as well as parents of other people. That's entirely ignoring the effects of US foreign policy in areas like south america which could easily have impacted the options of many young people who can afford the relatively low cost of internet and starcraft 2.
People are hero worshipping Assange because he's the only visual representation of a website that undermines governments that people (especially young people) feel disconnected from, which the current american political climate of partisanship over largely insubstantial issues creates/feeds. A lot of the non-US posters who rail against the US government are usually doing it because they feel equally apathetic towards both their country's political system and the US one, which due to the US superpower position does affect their own.
I'm a fan of wikileaks and what they do in terms of making important information public, I'm not a fan of any attempts by Assange or otherwise to sensationalise the release of that information or go after information with any particular political leaning or agenda, which while they're only marginally guilty of the former and not of the latter as of yet, the press conferences certainly seem to be going in a certain way.
Finally there's nothing wrong at all with being outraged at spurious claims and using political power to discredit or silence anyone, regardless of who it is and whether you agree with what they've done and being an apologist for governments because they 'provide for us' or whatever it is, is the same form of false idol, trust without earning it bollocks that allows bad people to do bad things and get away with it.

Ya the US got no oil out of it.
The law represents no less than institutionalized raping and pillaging of Iraq's oil wealth. It represents the death knell of nationalized (from 1972 to 1975) Iraqi resources, now replaced by production sharing agreements (PSAs) - which translate into savage privatization and monster profit rates of up to 75% for (basically US) Big Oil. Sixty-five of Iraq's roughly 80 oilfields already known will be offered for Big Oil to exploit.

What people ignore is that the United States, with notable exceptions such as Iraq, typically doesn't want to become involved in the business of the rest of the world. People I know in the State Department would love for the EU to step up and be more active in "policing" or whatever you want to call it, but what happens is that the regional powers in an area drag their feet and drag their feet until finally special interest groups in the US convince the government that it needs to intervene on the behalf of X because no one else is going to.

Since USA had no business to even be in Iraq, every USA soldier that died there is not a hero but an idiot for letting his government send him there.
You can only be a hero if you do something like that in a defensive war. I am sure none of the German soldiers in WWII are called heroes.
