That's part of the reason why they are so frequently recommended. If you aren't looking to address a specific problem with a current audio source (low volume, static, or noticeable distortion) or looking to spend lots of money on a more exotic amplifier, IMHO getting a cheapish sound card/DAC/amp will likely not do anything for the sound quality. Others will disagree with that. But if you try it out, be sure to report back on your impressions! Ya, I am aware of this. Just thought I'd try it out. 20 bucks isn't a huge investment, and if I eventually upgrade to better headphones, I think upgrading from onboard will be a decent investment. I'll let you know!

Out of curiosity, though, are any of skullcandy's "high-end" stuff good at all? (rocnation aviator, or the SKs) A relative is also offering to give me entry level goldring headphones. I haven't heard of this brand before. What are your opinion on this brand?

I mean I got the Goldring Dr100 and they are cheap and sound really good! So try them out for sure ![]()

XD thanks!! Beyerdynamic DT770/80 PRO Audiotechnica ATH-M50 audiotechnicas won't need an amp, beyer may need a small amp, but you could decide after you have heard them, it will most likely be loud enough. edit: Beyerdynamic will be much more comfortable for long periods of use btw. they have soft velor pads, and i have heard Audiotechnica M50's can clamp quite hard if you have a medium/large head

Most headsets at that price tend to be overpriced though, at least in terms of sound quality and comfort for the cost. Build quality may or may not be good. Hopefully somebody else actually knows something about these. On December 28 2010 07:02 bobalo wrote: I'm looking to spend roughly $200 on headphones. XD thanks!! Beyerdynamic DT-770 is usually about that price, has lots (but not ridiculous amounts) of bass, is closed, and is very comfortable, fitting over the ear. Sometimes the price goes to $150 or so, but $200 seems to be around usual. The midrange is a little recessed compared to the bass and treble, but that's to the liking of many people. There are several DT-770 versions that are marginally different, but the Pro/80 ohms version seems to be the most popular. That's the one I've used, and it's pretty nice. Without a dedicated amp, you'd want the 32 ohms version or the Pro 80, as the others may be a little too quiet out of an onboard audio chip or a portable player. What would you be plugging the headphones into? There are varying opinions on the importance of an expensive external amplifier as an alternative to whatever stock amp is in your audio source. I'm sure you can read about them in this thread.

I currently use a pair of Bose Triports (headband broke, taped together atm) and they were free so I can't complain about how overpriced they were, but they sound slightly better than the Sennheiser 202/208s(can't remember) as well the Sennheiser EH-150s, but considering the price difference it would be shocking if they didn't... I've been satisfied with M-Audio products in the past (love my monitors) so I wasn't too concerned with giving them more of my money... Does anyone have any experience with both the Q40s and the Bose Triports, I'm curious what differences I can expect... I mean, the people on head-fi shit all over bose (and recommend the Q40s on some conditions), but i saw the triports sell for a good 30-50 more and it certainly wasn't my intention to downgrade, so now i'm curious ^^ Thanks :D

I'm not an audiophile really, but I do love me some good bass. I want some fairly cheap headphones that offer decent sound. My price range is probably ~$50, which means I could go up to around $70-80. What would be the best headphones to look at?

when i plug them into my notebook, the sound is really mediocre. this is due to the likely-to-be-bad soundcard right? there is also alot of white noise in the background, how do i reduce it? if i plug these 90€ headphones into my 5.1 surround system, will the sound actually be as epic as i think? too lazy to just try since it means alot of work searching for the parts :0
