It seems like Starcraft is gaining greater public visibility. Asylum even published a quaint article of twelve things about Starcraft you probably didn't know (but I'm fairly certain most people on these forums before 2008 know all of them lol).

I've also seen some SC2 commercials on TV that appeals to the 18-35 male demographic (Comedy Central, etc.). There's also been an increase in interest among some of my friends who had never played BW before, but are getting interested in the franchise because of the release of SC2.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

It's a trend that's been going on for a very long time now. It's now "cool" to play Halo, MW and Madden. It follows that gaming in general is now cool and not limited to the stereotypic antisocial nerd in the basement with Cheeto dust down his shirt. Why not Starcraft? Because it's too smart for the average jarhead point and click noob toober? I don't think so. Starcraft is going to be cool this time around.

I was here in 2009 and I know all of it. I was introduced to the proscene at around 2008 though.

SC2 is appearing in digg so its natural for people to ask about sc1... in other communities like taringa there has been a rise in interest in sc1 but its also full of that 18-35 male demographic and they are very nostalgic about things...
number 4 can be the only unheard of the bunch..

Lol yeah, all those are totally new and unseen facts lol. The only one I haven't seen before is no.4. Here is australia it still isn't getting far into the general culture, haven't heard/seen a single tv add. But anywhere even vaguely gaming related there's a ton of SC2 exposure.
On a side note, no.3 is odd. Of course there are no plans for it on console, how on earth do you expect to play SC2 on console?

I knew all of it and I haven't even been a member for a year yet! <3 SC :D
Anyways,
I haven't been able to expierience anything similar to what you encountered except for the SCII commercials(on youtube titled "SCII commercial") because starcraft was never advertised very much in New Jersey and most of the kids I know are like "only a few kids play that, it must not be that good cause it isn't popular here and I never heard of it before". Its quite sad really
edit: some kids play WOW/WC3 and they never heard of SC or Diablo -.- I just shake my head and walk away when I hear that.

Yeah SC2 is helping with starcraft's visibility. one of my friends played starcraft 1 a little but was never interested in anything but money maps. but now he's watching all the big sc2 tournament videos and he just told me he finished watching all the videos on husky's youtube.

alright, number four wasn't known, but not very exciting to me either.
mind boggling 300apm? i can keep 300 apm for well over... 5 minutes...

As long as Blizzard doesn't water down things for more casual players, I don't care. This game will be the bomb!

What starcraft videos have over a million views? Never seen one before :o
|
Im all for more people understanding and accepting high level RTS games. But, commercialization of things is not always all positive return. The general public are not a wise people. Sometimes i have sat back and thought how great it would be to have the whole world dig esports and watch Jaedong etc. Commercialization can be like kool-aid: too much water and its ruined. Im not trying to be negative about things though, hopefully it turns out awesome. BUT...
Be careful what you wish for.

wow.. that article should tell me something i don't know already

i know what you're talking about, basically all my male associates who don't even play starcraft are suddenly hyping it up and saying that they're camping out side stores for that shit on midnight july 27th. they didn't even play the beta either lol

search up stuff like boxer's plays, starcraft highlights, pimpest plays, VODs of finals, or commentaries of finals. stuff that that usually have the highest views, though i can't check right now.
and VODs usually have views spread across a ton of the same video uploaded many times.

I love the giant plane advertisements.
Blizzard Employee: Sir, we've officially run out of billboards to advertise on for SC2 in South Korea. Head of Marketing: Hmm... That is a problem. Commericals? Employee: Already have that. SC2 on the commercials and BW for the shows. HoM: Press coverage? Employee: Did that. Sorta. Real ID didn't work out, but it's coverage. HoM: Random benches? Employee: Did that. HoM: Propaganda? Employee: We've had an entire contest hosted just for that. HoM: Well, what other big empty canvass can we use to slap on a Starcraft 2 logo? *looks outside the window and sees a plane overhead* HoM: Hmm....

I have noticed that Starcraft trailers and commentaries are making the top 20 videos viewed on youtube for the last couple of months.
edit: most viewed video on youtube today? Ghost of The Past Trailer.
