The Big Programming Thread - Page 368

Thread Rules 1. This is not a "do my homework for me" thread. If you have specific questions, ask, but don't post an assignment or homework problem and expect an exact solution. 2. No recruiting for your cockamamie projects (you won't replace facebook with 3 dudes you found on the internet and $20) 3. If you can't articulate why a language is bad, don't start slinging shit about it. Just remember that nothing is worse than making CSS IE6 compatible. 4. Use [code] tags to format code blocks.

edX introduce a new computer graphic course, taught by a UCBerkeley prof. The course is completely free and starting tomorrow. Course length will be 6 weeks. My thought: BINGO! just what i needed. Graphic is one of the big 3 courses in my University CS program and it never hurt to take a peek early.

I'm in a pretty general software engineering course at an oil and gas university (fuck Calgary) so I won't have as much opportunity as I'd like to look at graphics programming during my actual degree, thanks for the link ^^

Sounds awesome and I have yet to get any real graphics experience. I also have yet to learn C++ although I know C, Obj.C and Java so it probably won't be hard to pickup along the way. That's 2 birds with 1 stone. ![]()

There's this course too. Extensive course on Machine Learning from one of the best professors at CalTech! Machine learning is one of the fastest growing subfields of CS and it really is exciting and gives many opportunities to everyone, especially in this era of Big Data. I'd recommend it for everyone, you never know, you might end up being a data scientist (which are paid well) and this might be useful to you some day! https://www.coursera.org/course/ml Here's another one on coursera to, a bit lighter course if I'm not mistaken. Andrew Ng from Stanford University. Great course as well, I myself earned a statement of accomplishment there. Enjoy!

Looking forward to it. | ||

The basics of database design is extremely simple, but when you look at certain technologies that's when it becomes a whole other kettle of fish. So most likely that book won't teach you anything useful beyond what you could learn in a few days on the web. Find out exactly what about databases you are trying to learn and you might get a better answer. SQL or NoSQL database? Type of SQL database (Mysql or Oracle?) Using a language (PHP, Java or Ruby?) Application (Database warehouse, Website, Game, Business application?) All these factors will contribute to a whole other learning field that beginner database design won't help you with at all. For example in SQL databases you will need to learn about join tables for many-to-many relationships, NoSQL don't even have tables. Then some languages have a layer over SQL databases so you aren't writing any SQL and doing everything via an ODM which behaves nothing like SQL. In Oracle you have much more control over state than in MySQL. In MySQL when you update something it gets saved, that's not necessarily true in Oracle. Where you are applying the database will have a dramatic effect on design, are you prioritizing performance, redundancy, or granularity for instance? And then given the database engine you are using, this will change completely again. Going between different database management systems is like starting all over again.

I've heard US Computer Science degree sometimes teaches you physics (or psychology/philosophy). On the other hand, I didn't need to study that in the UK. Why is that difference? I mean there are combined degrees such as Law & something but mine is just Computer Science. I still had a lecture or two outside CS (e.g. cognitive psychology when implementing GUIs, a bit of physics when I was studying the Physical Layer and also deduction and reasoning as part of philosophy) but that was it.

Taking a class in another field (physics, biology, a language, ...) is normally allowed and you can still use the credit points for your degree. It's optional though I think (might be that some institutes force you).

I landed 3 days per week Work Experience at the back end of a clothing design company. They do website design/dev using Wordpress (I believe). I will be doing Search Engine Optimisation. It's a remarkable opportunity for me to be immersed in a real company environment. I'm lucky to get something even remotely relevant to coding, due to my location (nothing is here lol). I have started reading ebooks Teach Yourself (Visually) SEO, SEO For Dummies etc. Anyway I'm starting tomorrow, wish me luck, and any tips or advice you have ![]()
