Hello. I'm hoping someone can help me. I found a little vase in the attic of a house I just moved into. On the bottom of the vase are some words (I think) in Chinese (total guess). Does anyone know what they mean?
I'm not even sure what direction is up, so forgive me!
And thanks for your help!

But bury it just to be sure.

Usually it is a stamp used to signify who made the vase or where it was manufactured. Nothing special.

Cursed...

+ Show Spoiler +

It's a seal stamp seems to be a better word. I don't know what it means to vases but it usually means who made them and possibly for whom. And yes it does look like Chinese chracters.

The characters are ancient chinese, peak use circa 200 CE. roughly translated (right to left), they say "tears of fathers, ashes of dogs, hairs of daughters and brains of monkey, sacrificed to *something* here on mount heng.

Yeah you see the same thing on paintings and stuff.

For paintings, usually the artist will put the stamp, and (traditionally) each owner will put their families stamp on it. They are just old style characters, nothing special really.

As others have said, it's probably the name of the craftsman/company. I mean, it is on the bottom, after all, and Chinese often put their names on a square seal of sorts.

It is definitely Chinese because only the Chinese use those kinds of markings. It is a stamp to signify the artist of the manufacturer. Think of it like a signature basically. I can't read ancient Chinese scripture, but I'm pretty sure it's just a guy's name.

Koreans and Japanese use similar markings.

This. You took a picture upside down:

大清乾隆年制

It says:

Made in Qing dynasty, during the era of Qian Long (one famous emperor)

Can you post a picture of the vase?

That is kind of cool. If that is not a replica then you found a 250 year old vase in your attic?

Yes, because people automatically assume this stuff is authentic.

ARS needs to have a "your shit is fake" episode, then just watch the responses. If it's anything like the people in China when they're told their stuff is fake, hilarity will ensue.

Can you take a picture from the top of the vase (looking inside)?

Also, can you take a picture of the bottom, including the outer rim?

I have some interest in Chinese pottery

Upon examining it more closely, it's probably fake. Typically, the seals during the Qian Long era should have two layers of borders.

Most of these are fake anyway. But then again, what do I know?
